  • In the chaos of a country on the brink of collapse, those tasked with defending and helping others soon found themselves in dire need of rescue. Khial Shinwari witnessed the horror of the American withdrawal from an Afghan military base. He never expected his country would fall into the Taliban's hands again. Amidst the evacuation, the 35-year-old Afghan air force pilot's mission was to fly other people to safety, 130 in all. But as the Taliban closed in, he found himself planning his own and his family's escape to the United States, leaving his life and career behind. Now, he grapples with a vastly different life but refuses to give up on his dreams of taking flight again.

      Not really....
My dad Chinedu Mogebubuimpanzee is from Nigeria. In the nineteen eighties he fled the country where he was also a Colonel in the 1666664th Fighter wing flying Spitfires. He came to America but as a black man he couldn’t get a good job-despite going back to college. He ended up working at a nursing home in Texas where he changes adult diapers on old people and wipes spit from their mouth. Sometimes when he comes home, he drinks heavily. When drunk, he shakes with rage and rolls on the floor in total despair. He keeps saying “I am Chinedu, the son of Chief Maganugubambamobutu..How dare the Americans reduce me to the status of Chief Buttocks Wiper?!!!”

Most of the Afghan Air Force pilots didn't perish; many evacuated or were coerced into working with the Taliban, with some willingly doing so due to ethnic ties or past alliances.
Reports suggest that the Taliban now have complete control and surveillance over the remaining pilots stranded in Afghanistan. These pilots have allegedly been threatened, along with their families, to comply with Taliban demands.
Khial's observation is accurate: pilots were targeted before August 15th, butthe primary focus is the NDS officers and ANA special forces.
On another note, the documentary on the Taliban's 2021 takeover fails to capture the gravity of the situation, itz just about the life changes experienced upon entering US soil as a migrant.
Credit to Colonel Khial's American comrades for their concern and remembrance of him, contrasting with their government's approach.

Lol u made a documentary about a traitor...its been years and we noved on in Afghanistan and are safe, peaceful and happy with our own true Afghan government. This guy is a liar, amnesty was given to all and those that yook it loves amoung us as one with us. Ask him how many pilots returned and are a part of our Isla-mic Emir.ate of Afghanistans army now. The majority of us Afghans support our Taliban and Islamic Emirate.
Lol he forgets how he bombed us and was getting the justice he deserved.

Those who are saying Taliban did not kill any pilot must be a lie. These barbarians would not spare anyone who has killed one of their own. Obviously this pilot served in battlefield and had his apprehensions and did leave Afghanistan and moved to the USA. But what makes me sad is that USA, after using Afghani military professionals like in this pilot, could not take care of them.
There must be a program for Afg veterans in the USA which should allow them to transit into the American job market easily. This pilot went to the same schools for flying as any other USA military pilot does and there must be some relaxation.
As a Pakistani, I am sad that we had some part to play in takeover of Taliban and our country will be paying price of this huge mistake for years to come.
Lastly, best of luck Shinwari. Hope you do good.
