When I was a kid, I heard stories of new pokemon right before gen 2 came out... stories of pikablu and pikapink, legendary monsters rivaling mew. Later I learned pikablu was just Marill. Now today almost 20 years later I learn pikapink was real and also was just Marill.
Fun fact, you might be wondering where lugia's at, well he was actually made by the director of the "pokemon 2000" movie and was not meant to appear in ANY game, to this day it is the only pokemon (to my knowledge) that was not designed by gamefreak, it's really quite a miracle it made it into the games and the cover legendary no less.
Now Entei, Raikou and Suicune look like legendary "dogs".
Also, now I understand the Remoraid/Octillery evolution: a gun evolves in a tank xD

That's what I've been trying to tell people about the Remoraid line.
I imagine that some of these designs, like the dark cat, electric tiger, and fire/water seal would have been pretty popular. It’s a shame they got cut.
The electric tigers were definitely repurposed into the Manentric/Luxray lines from later generations. Both have that "electric tiger" aesthetic that GF really wanted to implement into real Pokemon since they were also cut from Gen 1 as well.
Man, I kind of wish Game Freak kept the scrapped Pre-evolution Pokemons for Meowth, Dudou, Ponyta, Grimer, Growlithe, etc. But the earlier design of Delibird looked more like a Santa Claus looking. Also, I think some of the early designs of the Legendary Beasts should be used as a new pre-evolution Legendary Pokémon of the Legendary Beasts.

Having that sharpedo alternative as a steel type would've been lit as FUCK, especially in gen 2. That middle evolution (Anchorage) dragging the anchor hooked up its ass looks particularly badass, too. It would've been WICKED to have that entire evolution line, especially with the lack of a water/steel type (or half-decent steel types worth having in your party in gen 2 in the first place...) lmaoo

While I will admit some of these designs and choices aren't to my liking (for instance, I prefer Hitmontop and Elekid as they are now,) and while I'm shocked and disappointed to see certain pokemon missing, like Lugia, well... I can't help myself. lol Some of these are unbelievably awesome to me! Like, I LOVE Anchorage (I'd probably never evolve it into Grotess. Too many bad memories of Huntail,) and I'm surprised to say that I think Magby looked more awesome back then. Also, something tells me I'd STILL have chosen the Water starter for my first play through if Feraligatr was still Aquaria. Go figure. lol
All in all, I enjoyed this a lot. Loved going through the early concepts for one of my favorite generations of Pokemon. Thanks! :)

Despite being labelled "Cruz" by some, I think Kurusu's name might be more correct, as it may be a play on "Crusoe" as in Robinson Crusoe. Crusoe was also the name given to the titular being in the 1990 children's novel The Water Horse, which was a sort-of origin story for the famous Loch Ness Monster. All these fit together a bit too nicely with Kurusu's looks and water typing to be coincidental.

It looks just like one of the beta Pokemon designs from Gold and Silver. There’s an ice type design they had designed that looks almost the same.

Interesting that the vulpix preevo was water type. Also think tengala's original evo design is pretty cool. The actual tangrowth to me just looks like an uninspired big mess.

The third evolution and the second would be better switched though, imo (the fish, THEN the eel, THEN the ass-anchor shark instead of having the eel be the final evolution.)
