    Yes, I do know Tangrowth exists :P
    I wanted to talk about both Tangela connections at the same time, but doing so ended up putting pre-Tangrowth in the wrong section. Whoops!

    Despite the three heads turning into two and then three again, I love baby Doduo's design, it looks like a nest with three newly hatched birds waiting for food from their parents.

    • @Yous0147
      @Yous0147 Před 6 lety +30

      Ok think this. It is born with three heads, but maybe the two side heads OUTGROW the middle one in stage one evolution, which leaves Doduo's third middle head hibernating hidden in it's feathers. Until the head grows Doduo is kind of airy without much direction, but once the hidden head awakens it evolves to Dodrio and gets it's determined personality and look.

      I do like an idea I saw floating around. This evolution would transform but add a steel secondary type to anything it copied. Steel is an amazing defensive type, so that would be a highly valuable ability. Sadly even if the devs came up with that idea, abilities weren't introduced till Gen III so it probably wouldn't have ever happened.

      @pokeness686 Před 6 lety +2

But now, with the unexpected discovery of Animon, I'm not so sure anymore... :s Much like Ditto, Animon and Mew don't really look alike. On top of that, it is kind of weird to think a failed clone would evolve anyway, isn't it?

    Gotta say, I liked a lot of the Pokemon that would've been brand new for Gold and Silver, and I'm kind of upset that a lot of them were cut. However, I definitely liked the final versions of gen 2 Pokemon better than the beta ones seen here, and I wasn't crazy about many of the scrapped evolutions/pre-evolutions either. Isn't Pangshi based on jiangshi? For those who don't want to read the wiki here's the first paragraph from it.
    "A jiangshi, also known as a Chinese "hopping" vampire, is a type of reanimated corpse in Chinese legends and folklore. "Jiangshi" is read goeng-si in Cantonese, cương thi in Vietnamese, gangshi in Korean, kyonshī in Japanese, and "hantu pocong" in Malay and Indonesia. It is typically depicted as a stiff corpse dressed in official garments from the Qing Dynasty, and it moves around by hopping, with its arms outstretched. It kills living creatures to absorb their qi, or "life force", usually at night, while in the day, it rests in a coffin or hides in dark places such as caves.[1] Jiangshi legends have inspired a genre of jiangshi films and literature in Hong Kong and East Asia."
    That's the same kind of monster Chiaotzu from DB was based off of. It's a shame Pangshi isn't a pokemon in games rn I would love a spoopy vampire bear.

    I think the reason that there are so many babies is because this was the generation that breeding/eggs were first introduced. Maybe at some point in development they felt like they had to make a baby form for every Pokemon so it would have something to hatch into. It probably became to time consuming for them to have to make so many babies xD.

    The scrapped tangela evolutions feel like something from Japanese myth, they look really neat. I also love the mantine with the dark and light contrasting patterns. It’s also interesting to see why certain Pokémon have odd dex entries like Umbreon’s poison, kind of feels comparable to vestigial functions. I liked seeing how designs changed and influenced future designs, as that’s how it is when going back to old art and using elements to produce something new.

    • @Drakbarn
      @Drakbarn Před 6 lety +12

      That "slug" Chikorita was someone trying to sketch the Chikorita they saw in the demo. Considering that there was only a short time a person could play the demo, it was probably hard to memorize every detail of the designs they saw, especially if you only saw the pokémon briefly.

    • @Vonajex
      @Vonajex Před 6 lety

      Malin The AmbientDinosaur Was it an earlier demo? Because in the Spaceworld demo, Chikorita already has it's final design. The art I've seen of beta Chikorita is usually referred to as concept art, so is that a mistake on the part of those posting it?

    • @Azelf89
      @Azelf89 Před 5 lety +2

      TonyDan Nope, dude’s right.
      To explain a bit further, the designs came from a Japanese fan page created all the way back in the late 90’s when Gold & Silver were first being shown, in which a Japanese fan documented their experience with the Spaceworld ‘97 demo and a later early ‘98 demo (from which event I can’t remember) and gave their own interpretations of the new Pokémon and Rival.
      As to why they were passed off as “official” for so long? It’s a classic case of early internet weirdness, where a lot of International Pokémon fans, mostly children, didn’t read Japanese so they didn’t quite know the context of these drawings, other than that it involved Gen II. Combined with the fact that most people have never bothered to actually check where those designs came from, and you get misinformation that even sites like Bulbapedia still spread to this day.

    My theory about Doduo's pre-evolution: When it becomes Doduo, only two of its heads grow. One remains tiny and stays dormant for a while until it's ready to grow. Once they become Dodrio, the third head sprouts back up and claims dominance.
