  • A tip permit or temporary import permit is a permit issued to tourists and temporary residents to bring foreign plated vehicles into Mexico. Permanent residents are not allowed tips unless they're coming into Mexico with the permanent resident sticker in their passport from the embassy, in which case they will receive a 30-day tip.
If you are a tourist, a Tip can work out well if you're going to drive your vehicle into Mexico and remove it within the 180 day limit. overstaying makes your vehicle illegal and where nobody will really kick your door down. you do lose your $400 deposit and insurance may not cover, complete loss or theft. You also may be harassed by authorities, although technically only Federal authorities have the jurisdiction to bother you about an expired tip because it is a federal document.
We often recommend people investigate importing or legalizing their vehicles prior to entering Mexico. One because most legalizations and importations need to start before the border. And nobody wants to drive back once they have driven 18 hours into Mexico. Or two, they can unintentionally block their vehicle from the legalization system which gives them no future option besides removing it at the end of the Tip expiration date. And yes tourists can get their vehicles legalized or imported.

We are SO frustrated. Our email messages to you never receive a reply. My car is a 1999 Lexus and I would like a Jalisco plate. I think it is considered a ‘classic.’ Can you advise us what we can do? Our US plate expires this coming March. Thanks, Nancy and Chris
