    Her experience is not different than what I'm going to add... The office to get the TIP is called the "Banjercito". It isn't always at the US/MEX border but one is always near. The TIP isn't necessary if you are staying with in the first 20 km of the border, anywhere on Baja, and Sonora. There is always an immigration office for getting your personal paper (the FFM) at any border crossing, but the car registration is done at a Banjercito. Some are at the us border, some are 24 hrs. The fee is more like $50 plus the deposit, usually $400. If you are the title holder, they want you to carry an original title. Trailers and boats and bikes too. They say, "you show an original passport at immigration, the original pink slip is the same, no?" You would show a photo-copy of your passport." If somebody holds title, there is a procedure that you need to research, and do first. Also here, they make sure you bought insurance to drive in Mexico. They don't sell insurance.

    One note on permanent residents living and driving exclusively in the zona libre: my understanding is that a TIP is not required and a permanent resident can drive a U.S. licensed car (as long as they also have a U.S. driver's license and Mexican car insurance.) Is that your understanding as well?
    My wife and I are moving to Loreto (Baja Sur) and plan to go the "South Dakota" route in terms of keeping a car in Loreto (just to clarify, all of the Baja peninsula is included in the zona libre.) It's funny, I've looked into this pretty extensively and can't seem to get a definitive answer. :) I do know that about a quarter of the license plates in Loreto are South Dakota plates; so, it appears that a lot of residents there are taking advantage of this approach.

      @ctjewett Před rokem +1

      TIP is not required for Zona Libre and all of Baja California, norte and sur. Quintana Roo, too, doesn't require one, but you need a TIP regardless to get there, so... it's a little funny.

    The form on Banjercito website is jacked up. They asked me for my mothers maiden name, and when they printed my application my name showed up as FIRST_NAME LAST_NAME MOTHERS_MAIDEN_NAME. When I submitted my passport copy with the application, it got declined because my name did not match. WTH. Why do they add mothers maiden name as part of your last name ?

    • @meraterapia
      @meraterapia  Před rokem +1

      Thank you for the feedback! You have to return to the border when the car permit expires to renew it for another 6 months. I used to do this for years at a time as a temporary resident. The permit is through customs (Banjercito). A temporary residency visa is through immigration (INM) and in my experience those two entities operate very independently- little to no communication. I hope this helps!

    • @meraterapia
      @meraterapia  Před rokem

      Unfortunately you can’t return the permit online. My advise would be to look up the nearest Banjercito to turn it in. They have to verify the VIN as well as the physical presence of the car in the US which is why they don’t allow people to turn it in online. They’ll absorb your deposit too if it expires, so I recommend finding a Banjercito before then.

      Thank you for your comment and for providing this information for other viewers. My husband is now a dual citizen of the US and Mexico, so our only option is to make sure we travel with supporting documentation. I didn’t know about the 4 year rule though, so that’s convenient! When I was on a “non-immigrant” visa years ago, before the TR visa was an option, my TIP expired every 6 months, so I had to cross frequently. Anyways, every case is unique. Thanks for pointing out this option!

      Yes, along with my Mexican husband getting a Mexican tourist visa using his US passport. If the vehicle is in anyone’s name but your own, you’ll need additional documentation proving you have permission to drive it (ie. Lease agreement, marriage certificate, etc.) See www.banjercito.com.mx/registroVehiculos/ for more information.
