German manufacturers stand a chance in India only if they prioritize providing aftersales services and conduct audits on their service centers to ensure fair practices. The cost of getting German machines fixed is high, and the limited training of mechanics in dealing with German cars aftermarket, especially those based on chips, poses a challenge. Often, even minor issues are exaggerated by dealers, leading to unnecessary part replacements. The scarcity of mechanics capable of working on German cars aftermarket further compounds the problem. Despite claims by Volkswagen and Skoda about their 2.0 initiatives in India, this issue remains unresolved, hindering their success in the Indian market until addressed.

@@DWREV Traditionally for first 2-3 years of ownership Indian customer takes their vehicle to dealership for maintenance, thereafter they prefer to go an aftermarket for service due to unnecessary high cost maintenance at dealership. That is where the know-how and capability has a bigger role to play by aftermarket service stations, typically Japanese cars wins this segment by large, so the person who is buying new and keeps for 2-3 or max 5 years and the next owner who buys them as pre-owned both has a win-win situation. Korean cars kept the maintenance cost almost at par with aftermarket. On the other hand German brands loses on this area, people in remote areas gets afraid to buy them. Potential solution for German brands could be - Tie up with aftermarket service chain and equip them with tools and training or control the service cost at dealership. Secondly the dealership experience, we Indians like to get pampered with good 1:1 care at dealership including repeated follow-up - which is largely missing at any German dealership in India. On the other hand it is very unlikely you will come out empty hand (without buying or decision finalised) from any Hyundai or Suzuki showroom, the amount of care and attention they provides will make you almost obligated to buy the product.

Also, a lot of people already commute on bicycles in India (huge percentage).. Look up the data and we have been doing it since centuries. So that's not a problem but no one likes to ride on a hot, unsafe and loud road. We had narrow tree lined roads which were used for walking and moving around on bicycles. Trees provided shade, beauty and cooling (through evaporation) which made it not just bearable but enjoyable.

It's funny how it is suggested that German manufacturers will try to position themselves as EV market leaders. While German IC cars are really exceptional, in EV worldwide they are yet make any significant mark... So without an existing significant product lineup how will they try to position themselves as leader in segment.
Secondly apart from very few VW hatch backs most of the German IC cars only are well beyond what is the most popular price range in India (around 10-15 lack INR maybe will stretch till 20 lack by coming 2-3 years, inflation adjusted). Any dedicated EV or a conversion of an existing IC model to an EV will be a lot costlier than the equivalent IC model. So do not see that German manufacturers are going to be able to field any reasonable mass market EV in India.
Also feature deprived and/or small cars are gradually becoming out of trend in India. So no chance of cost cutting there.

    • @shresthsonkar9207
      @shresthsonkar9207 Před 5 měsíci +3

Well the fact of matter is, that unlike emission norms which keep rolling around every few years, ev’s don’t need them
And a recurring investment into engine and exhaust tech every few years is worse than one time investment in good EV platform that can be used for at least a decade
Even rn, euro7 in Europe is a hanging guillotine over lot of ice car models unless they become hybrids in next gen
With the volumes VWAG has in India, an investment into hybrid doesn’t make sense as it has dual complexity of ice and electric powertrain - and looking at reliability of Germans in Indian conditions, I’d be hard pressed to go for a German hybrid at a time when people avoid much simpler and time tested German ice cars
Secondly, ev’s are simpler and cheaper to build and if the rumours are to be believed, VWAG is in talks with mahindra (read via team bhp)
Such a partnership could be very useful as it would share the investment burden

Thanks for watching our video and for your well-reasoned comments! While there are challenges for German manufacturers in the Indian market, the transition to electric mobility and evolving consumer preferences so present opportunities for innovation and growth. And as technology advances and economies of scale are achieved, the cost of EVs is expected to become more competitive. Partnerships, local manufacturing and government incentives could also play a role in making EVs more accessible to a broader audience in India.

American and French car makers don't understand India. They think we don't spend money. We do spend money, but we want what we want for that money.
We want efficiency, ease, comfort and safety and we are willing to spend on it.
While american companies keep moving out, Indian companies, Korean and Japanese have swooped in.
    And they are thriving.
Hell even the very late entering MG and Kia are also thriving.
Now Renault and Citroën... Totally underestimated the market. They thought we want 'cheap' cars, so they strapped down their European models and launch that in India. All of them failed.
The companies which have adapted and made cars suitable for Indians are thriving. Totyota's Innova and Fortuner have a waiting period of 1 year.
Suzuki and Hyundai and Kia are absolutely killing it.
Renault and Citroën are having tough luck. They continually read the market wrong. Give features which nobody wants. And remove features which were non compromisable for the customer.
People in India are willing to pay premium price for premium product. They think they can launch a bare bone premium brand at entry level prices and they will succeed.
That brand shopping works in the west. In India whatever car you launch people go to buy it with a big check list. They will increase their price if you have a good model. Else they won't pay a penny to you.
Ford was too impatient and stubborn .
    Honda again was too stubborn.
'we will make what we make. You buy'. Both these companies are doing very poorly in India.
Had Ford stayed in India for a little longer, it would have ruled the market. But tough luck.

The DSG gearbox used in the cheaper models of Volkswagen is industrial junk and is not suitable for driving on crowded roads in India. Frequent running and stopping can cause the gearbox to overheat and produce abnormal noises within two to three years. The DSG gearbox is very prone to water ingress on rainy days. VW cars only sell well in rural China and their domestic market. If Volkswagen Germany wants to sell cheap cars for around $20000 in India, their transmissions will have to rely on imports from Japan and South Korea. Except for the rural market in northern China, German cars cannot compete with Japanese and Korean cars in Asia.
The engine consumes lubricating oil is characteristic of German cars. The difference in quality stability between German cars and Japanese cars is too great, which is why German cars can only succeed in the Chinese market where brands blindly worship and have strong tolerance for shortcomings just for logo. Now in the rural areas of northern China, we are also abandoning German cars, and the new generation is more pragmatic. Most of the new cars on the road are domestic Chinese and Japanese brands. German cars are becoming fewer and fewer.
The advantages of German cars over Japanese and Korean cars are chassis tuning and directional control. But ordinary family cars are driven on paved roads, and people are more concerned about quality stability and low maintenance costs.

Adapt or disappear is true for Indian market. As a Ford car owner for last 8+ years, my experience has been nothing short of great. My first car (Figo) & the car I use now (Ecosport) are very reliable. The maintenance cost has been same as Maruti Suzuki. But Ford made a big mistake of not adapting to Indian consumer's needs & had to exit. I have a couple of friends who bought used Ecosport last year. Endeavour still fetches a high price in resale market. Shows that people are still interested in the brand. But it was Ford's inability to adapt to the market need which cost them their place in India. Very sad!

Since you're something of a Ford fan, there is good news. Ford is very likely to make a comeback to the Indian market, potentially with the Endeavour. They've filed a patent for the Endeavour in India, and the Chennai plant is no longer for sale, plus they seem to be hiring people at their factory. One can only hope that they've learned from their past mistakes, and that they're willing to adapt. They came so close with the EcoSport!

Other end, in India car is not just a need, it's a status also VW or Skoda don't have road presence.. I know it's not comparable but Mahindra Thar, Scorpion N, 700, Tata Safari, etc gives you road presence as well as value for money..
In India fuel economy also Important, a person who buys mercedes also ask for milage of the car and this is the reason EV/CNG is getting famous here..
Also like the new Skoda VW SUV but trust me Indian will buy big size SUV like Scorpio N or Tata Harrier at the price of skoda just because of Road presence of value for money.. And we can see the sale number..
