    Thanks for the video. I wish I didn't need the analog gear taking up all my space. But analog is open, wide, and the separate sounds pop out of the speakers with little effort. The easiest way for me to show someone analog vs digital is reverb. For anyone that's only used ITB reverbs, a hardware reverb on an analog fx return has to be experienced.

  • @audiowarriorproductions5881

    I feel the analog version preserve more of the information that was recorded. Also, by going through the console it enhances the root, 3rd, and 5th harmonics of the audio making it sound more realistic. I don't think either sound bad at all though. They both sound really good.

    Interesting project. But this isn't really "Digital vs Analog" but rather "Eurodesk vs CueClone". In that light doesn't really show what Digital processing can do vs limited low cost analog gear. If we are simply borrowing eq curves on a plug that does not emulate any of the harmonic distortion of the analog counterpart, of course there will be something lacking in the emulation. But if you compare a Eurodesk eq with, say the Waves SSL channel, you will have a different result. Not by setting things up as identical as possible with the analog, but to use both to the best of their ability and compare those results. The SSL plug in will have far more frequency options and bandwidth curves at your disposal so you can actually mix. Same goes for the compressors. But don't set them identically. Set the analog to the best of its ability, then take the appropriate (not necessarily the most similar to the analog specimen) compressor in your digital arsenal, and set it by ear, to the best of its ability. See which comes out better. Mixing is not paint by numbers. Numbers mean nothing. You have to use your ears. Part of the digital advantage is far more choice than what you have in your analog rack. I love good analog gear, which I use on the way in. Once it's in the box, the digital stuff gives me stunning results.

    In the box mix sounds VERY static and 1 dimensional. The analog mix sounds, well, musical and 3 dimensional. Or to put it another way, the ITB mix sounds like an MP3, whereas the analog mix sounds like a high quality WAV file. Like it.

    I find that analogue has a warmth that digital can't quite match, digital sounds sort of clinical. I also agree with you Zed, I find that the analogue console allows you a tactile connection that working in the box just cannot match. Maybe I'm biased as I started out using a Tascam 424 MK1 before moving on to a Fostex R8 and a Dynamix console before going digital because for home recording at that time digital just wasn't an option. As usual, a great video from you Zed, thanks.

  • @DanDuskin
    @DanDuskin Před 6 lety +7

    Even a Behringer Eurodesk sounds more exciting than generic ITB plugins. One could argue that the right plugins could match or beat it, but I would suggest that it still wouldn't be as much fun and inspirational as the tactile experience of using a physical mixing console-which will positively effect the outcome of your mix.

    I have no problems with digital, it's obviously a "necessary evil" in today's production world but I would have to say my ear is more amenable to the analog mixdown. I think the analog mix had more character, and possibly more distortion, but it was desirable and interesting. Both good mixes by the way, great work!

  • @Ramplcro
    @Ramplcro Před 5 lety

    Thank you for comparison. Whether it sounds better or not, what is obvious here is that track separation, width, depth o and overall 3d picture is more pronounced on analog.
    I wonder about the sound if you would mix everything (no hardware at all) in the box and when you are finished you run separate tracks through analog channels (no processing, as a line mixer). And then post the results.

  • @MacXpert74
    @MacXpert74 Před 7 lety +41

    • @ZedMartyProduction
      @ZedMartyProduction  Před 7 lety +3

      +MacXpert74 It's quite interesting, isn't it? However, the difference might get smaller when adding other eq plugins that introduce a little bit of saturation and coloration.

    • @MacXpert74
      @MacXpert74 Před 7 lety +1

      Yeah, It made more of a difference than I expected to be honest. I've seen a video in which they showed the difference between a digital mix-down and one going through a analog summing box. The difference in that case was very small, to the point of being inaudible. So I guess the difference you have here is really down to the better sounding analog compressors and EQ. It's nice to know that the investment in those is well worth it! :)

    There is more high end on the analog mix but that can be adjusted so they sound exactly the same. Mixing analog or digital doesn't matter, you just do it in a different way to get to the same result. Btw, I bought a Mackie 8-bus 24 when they came out in the 90's but I haven't used it the last 12 years because it's obsolete for recording or mixing but using it in a live situation could be a good thing.

    To me, the digital mixdown actually sounds like some tracks are missing, almost like there's a gap somewhere in the mids. Quite a big audible difference I'd say. I like the analog mixdown. I'm sure you could make up for that by EQing/saturating/whatnot the digital mix accordingly. Very interesting comparison, thank you!

    If you start from 0 I think digital is just more convent but, viceversa, if you are like to find or already owning a good analogic it doesnt have sense.
    A person could heir a complet full analogic setup(i'm talking without pc too) so good that just has more sense convert it after in digital and viceversa.

    @SoundManStudio Před 5 lety +1

    A lot of people here don't really get the idea of digital vs analog as they say that we hear it on CZcams in digital anyway!
    Well, it's the process of mixing that makes the difference.. there are harmonic distortion, phase anomalies and electronic components that shape the sound of analog.. regardless of the final listing format.
    Digital is very truthful the sound and require different mindset of decision making while mixing.. which is awesome.
    Yet, analog will change sound character and consequently will affect the way you make your mixing decisions.
    Plus.. who wouldn't want a punchier and wider mix with no extra effort? 😜

    good comparison! i got similar results when comparing identical tracks from cd and vinyl. analogue has something to it that is hard to describe, but it's there. it's just a matter of personal preference i guess. none of both is really "better" for everything. both have their pros and cons. i'd say for some music i'd choose analogue, for other music i'd go for digital, depending on which i prefer for that kind of track. I love some tracks from vinyl, others i'd rather listen to from cd. i guess it's the same principal when producing.

      i closed my eyes with headphones on and it was plain that the analog mix have better low mid clarity and an extended stereo. The digital mix was slightly more muddy and center focused. nothing crazy but def perceivable

      @@landoflittlerain because it took up space and is still as impractical as it used to be to this day. Analog has a sound to it but for mixing it simply does not justify for many people, especially with digital emulations and workflows getting better. For tracking, I would agree that analog gives a lot to a recording, but for mixing, when the song has been tracked well there are less cons than pros for most mix engineers nowadays. Having said that, there is a certain workflow to analog and console mixing which cannot be replicated in the digital domain as easily (some control surface try to do that). I myself mix hybrid with a console too but I can totally aknowledge that for many mixing guys, there is totally no reason to go analog as it is a total pain in the ass, aswell to your wallet witout any major reasons.

    I think the top end in enhanced in a very slightly better way in the analog version but the point now is: say you spent 15k on the analog gear to get that sound ... I think if you spend 1k on samplepacks/plugins/softsynths you would get better sounding music so is it worth it? and just for the record I was thinking of getting a analog mixer with analog compressor and EQ

    For me its basically no difference if you are used to something or you have skills for something ... i use allen and heath digital mixer (ive been from 5 years now costing just 4000bucks)for eq and all of that routing and sends, bussing etc etc... and also some signal converters and audio interfaces i use plugins for only effects or compression and also use a saturator and music warmer plugin and mastering is done fully with plugins and i use the UAD fair child tube warmer plugin for better sound quality and the UAD v76 vintage preamp and for instruments i have a 4k bucks martin guitar, a gibson les paul and a fender strat i have 2 bases too otherwise i use vsts such as keyscapes omnisphere kontakt 5 and some other orchestral packs i have a juno 60 and a juno 108 , for wavetable i have moog 1 ,moog subharmonic, waldorf quantum and prophet 8 i have a 88 key midi and for pianos i have the nord grand, nord stage 3 . I have arturia keylab too and other high quality plugins too... like vintage verb, vlhalla plate , some soundtoys plugins like decapticator etc.. and some vocal plugins like the antares mic mod(which is freakin amazing you can simulate expensive mics) for removing unwanted trash i use izotope rx7 or 8 and pro q3 and for getting unique out of the box sounds i use izotope vocalsynth and my secret weapon psp audioware vintage warmer that throws expensive analog out of the window thats basically my whole setup that brings my mix up to par with analog and even better than analog ... its not gear that matters but skills and used to attitude. Analog is expensive for any berklee grad like me... so i use 25% analog and 75% ITB( in the box)

      I have a Soundcraft GB4-32 now, great mixer! For me 24 channels would be enough for mixing because I do quite a bit pre-mixing in the DAW but 32 channels are also very nice as I can return all outboard FX on separate channels. The Allen & Heath is also a good mixer!
