Warren discusses his hybrid approach to mixing in-the-box and through an analog SSL console. He walks through a mix showing both the plug-in processing done in Pro Tools and on each channel on the SSL. In part 1, he breaks down the drums and bass in the mix.

I don't play any instrument and don't record or produce music... can barely even hear a difference in most of A/B comparisons when turning on/off compressors and eq's... but find this all endlessly fascinating and can't stop watching your videos :D Thanks for taking the time to make them for us.

Hi Warren. Great, very insightful video as always! On the album we just finished mixing, we used a second hand (from a jazz club which had to close down) Midas Venice console just for analog summing. We went out in stereo pairs (always two channels on the console panned hard left and right (all signal processing was done within the DAW). We had to carefully measure the level of each channel with a 1 kH tone at the start of each session. Since the production went on for a long time (we did it in our "free" time) we needed total recall (that's why we didn't use any EQ on the desk). We were lucky enough to have great D/A abnd A/D converters. The difference was incredible. So much more clarity without messing up the sound of the original in-the-box mix. We also ran all mixes through a Studer A80 at 15 ips (in a big studio which did a great bargain for us). It further improved on what we wanted. The only problem was noise. We had to use the material without going through tape on the quieter parts (for example just guitar and vocals). Just a word about toms: I always find that especially the floor tom(s) have a boomy resonance each time the drummer hits the kick drum (unless you go overboard with gaffer tape - which I use sparingly). That's why I usually take the toms all out when they are not playing. I even step radically down with fader automation when a low tom is followed by a kick and crash, because it is "booming" too much. I had that problem on all sorts of drums, heads, different studios and different tuning. Fader automation solves this completely. I personally found that the sympathetic resonance of toms (with the kick) doesn't add to the drum sound. That's why I now take them out completely when they don't play. But that's in pop/rock. I very likely would do it differently in jazz. Just wanted to share this. Thanks for reading and thanks for another great video!

Hi Warren, this vid and specifically this comment I’m replying to are a few years old but very serendipitous for me. I came to this video looking for information about how to set-up gain staging and routing when coming back out of your DAW into an analog mixer for hybrid mixing/summing. I actually have a very similar pre-Behringer Midas mixer (Midas Venice 240) to the mixer Christian (hello Christian) describes above. On our Midas mixers the line input does not bypass the internal trim gain stage. The ‘insert’ does bypass that gain stage (and the faders and pan), but I as understand it the inserts on a live board like this are meant to be used as send/returns and require that kind of cabling. So that leaves the line inputs and I am just curious whether that limited routing is ideal for a hybrid mixer and if so what exactly would the procedure be for setting up proper gain staging between the outputs of the DAW (I use the internal converters on my RME UFX+) and the Midas mixer. Should I leave the trim pots as low as possible and the faders at 0?

Hi Warren your video's are excellent please keep up the good work! I also use a hybrid method :) I still record to tape (yes I am old school LOL). My chain is a follows I use to Toft ATB 32 which goes directly into 2 Tascam msr-16's from there I go into ProTools 10 native HD. I use an Otari 5050 to check mixes and a Studer A810 and as a final tape stage after mastering. I love both digital & Analog, I love recording to tape but do all my editing in Pro Tools. For me Analog is much more than just recording to tape, it's also the interaction with the music and the artist . This is the reason why I brought an analog console and not a digital one, with the digital console you have to scroll through menus, but with the analog console you just reach up and turn a knob. Just look at the old techniques they used back in the day when they recorded bands like the Beatles or Led Zeppelin. I still love that type of interaction with making music but love what editing in the box gives me. But I also work a lot inside the box do to the fact a lot of my clients will come and already have stems or 2 tracks of their song already done in another DAW. I use mostly out board gear when I record and do my mixes, you will be surprise on the deals you can find on EBay as a lot of folks sale a lot of their gear since a lot have gone completely in the box, but I also have a ton of plugins as well. I find and you will be surprise at a lot of folks who record using this method. I live here in NYC and there are many studio's who still only use tape. My goal is to get a Studer A800 with a Clasp system and a AMPEX ATR 102 for mastering soon.

When I was a kid, my father sold his Gretch Country Gentleman to pay for my school fees (we where poor). I never quite forgave him for that. 4 years ago, I sold my 8 track Otari reel unit to pay some pretty serious debts. The regret I felt finally made me forgave my dad. Turns out everyone can be forced to sell their gold to put food on the table. But I'd always dump my session out of Logic onto Tape for a final analogue mixdown onto the 2 track (Which I could send to a golden ear mate to master for me), and it just sold the whole analogue old school feel so well.

I'm guessing patch bay would be your answer. Keep everything patched/wired in and from the front, use short patch cable to connect what you want to connect.

Quick question, how do you record back from the console into pro tools?
Output to input...?
Its just a loop. You insert the console the same as you would hardware. Into the console then outputs back into the converters.
External inserts using a plugin in your DAW. in Sonar the plugin is named "external insert". You can also bounce the mix in a live mode and your AD-DA converters from the sound card will fix the conversion from analog to digital, provided that if you don't have a separate hardware for that purpose. One thing to note is round trip latency and phase shifting that can be introduced in the signal. Most modern plugins have an option to measure this latency in advance by sending a beacon and later compensate for the introduced latency by shifting the signal back to its original timing.
Could you do a video on how to route all this and what hardware you're using to go out of the box and back in? This is where I am lost. I have my eye on an Antelope Orion 32. But it's out of my price range...is there a cheaper alternative that won't limit me to 8 channels?

Somebody might be interested in what Saul Walker and Paul Wolff had to say about the API plugins appearing and I did saw my API text (it was too much for me to post anyways)
What's the headroom on the Neve? I had located a comment, here, but I lost it I must say that I doubt that a virtual plugin would capture thereal character of the Jensen's and Saul's 2520. I'm used to+30 db headroom, but I just mention because your video made me remember my API day, but I'm trying to split my thinking. I go where the customers go.
I have to push past it, and I think your video(s) will help me through my ingrained prejudice against non-discrete electronics (off-topic).

BTW, Offtopic, and sorry about the comments. When I saw the API reconstructions, I waxed nostalgic about my history as a former API employee. I miss +30 db headroom, which I got used to, among other things. I'm working on both knowledge and a philosophy change.
PS: I have a funny comment from Paul Wolff about virtual API plugin's,and it's pure Saul Walker and Paul Wolff,. Of course it won't take long to guess their thoughts. I don't have their luxury, as I go where my venues (large churches, concerts, etc.) go.

Thanks Warren, excellent video. Have you checked out AutoAlign by SoundRadix for aligning tracks? I believe it's main purpose is for multi mic'ed instruments such as drums / piano etc, but on a few occassions' I've used it to maximize phase between kick and bass. Looking forward to part 2!

Do you have a video showing how to record in your DAW, come out into an analog console and back into the DAW? I want to be able to use my onboard console effects but have a board that only send preamp signal to USB. I can hear the analog boards effects in the headphone mix but not in the DAW. Wondering if I need an IO.

Most interesting video I have ever seen on hybrid mixing. Sending it through the console really adds something special I don't think you can get ITB, but of course it is a SSL. Would you achieve anything running these through lower end analog consoles such as Soundcraft, Allen & Health, Midas using outboard compression and then through a tube compressor for the final mix bus for those of us without a SSL?
Hi RM International thanks for the fantastic question! That's a really interesting one, I think yes and no. What I would do is insert a console channel strip on certain instruments. I believe the Bass, kick and snare would react really well to having some other transients being soaked up by an analog console! I would experiment, obviously if only part of the drum kit was going through a console you would have to delay the rest of the kit accordingly, hope day compensation would handle it ok. I'm a Future Bass producer and for a while now I'm looking for a solution to have warm but accurate sounding mix without losing much of the high frequencies but taking enough for making it sound less harsh on people's ears, like although it gets to serious high levels of volume it won't hurt anyone's ears, as an example hear "Skrillex - Spoon Me", it's future bass and has the perfect sound that I'm pursuing..now because I guess he's using analog tapes and analog consoles and because I don't have any money or space to buy one here's my request:
I want to request a video, if you can show us how to emulate analog sounding mix inside a daw, I really need that substitute, I heard its possible but I really don't know how to do it and I know you're able to pull out something of your genius head..so I would love you to show us how to do it in a video - this can save a lot of life ;)

Very practical and informative video Warren. Just one question, when you say you have "masters" in your PT session you mean actually master channels or Aux (buses), and if you're using masters is there any particular reason while you're using them instead of auxes ? Thanks :)
Hi Steve Galante thanks I like to have Master faders going to the console, that way if theres several aux channels with guitars etc bussed with different effects there is one dedicated master fader that sums them to the console. I know traditionally they sounded better than auxs, however now they are probably the same but I do it for focus and clarity so I have one place where I can just boost all the rhythm guitars and their associated effects if need be. Amazing video. Thank you! Are you sending the tracks to the console with effects already on them? For example, when you are EQ'ing the snare on the ssl are you also EQ'ing the snare verb? I have an inward connections summing mixer and use outboard EQs on occasion and am always confused on the best way to do this. Thanks again.

Really informative video. I'd like to know more about your routing scheme through the hardware. You are coming out of your Protools D/A convertors and into your console but are you going into the channel input or another input like a tape return? Also did you let the signals clip a bit on purpose because you like the sound?
Hi DoItYourselfMusician thanks for watching! Yes I come out of the Avid IO's into the console and then back to my Lavry Blue AD Convertor which sounds amazing! As far as the clip indicators, they come on just before you hear audible clipping and yes I do like the way it sounds driven hard like that. I mixed half of the last Aerosmith record and Chris Lord Alge did 3 songs and when I went to work on the tracks with him (he has the same console) the clip lights were going almost the whole time, so I know I wasn't doing anything wrong! I don't really get this video. I'm a beginner and I have only a guitar interface which I connect with my PC and I record it and mix it in my DAW. In the future I'd like to build a bigger studio but i still don't get the setup, I thought it goes like this - you put the mic (let's say a kick mic) to a console channel and then you go from the channel output to your interface input, and from the interface output to your DAW. You set up the sound which you want to record on your console and then you track it and afterwards you do all the production in the box. But in this video it seems that I got it wrong. Can you explain how it goes to a beginner? Otherwise, thanks for making these great vids its really helpful.
I noticed you have the Apogee AD8000. I have one of those and love that its input circuitry is so transparent and no electrolytic caps. I'm curious how you implement it? Is it your main A/D when doing overdubs? Just a clock or just some extra channels? Anyway I'm kind of binge watching all your videos and trying to soak it all in :) Cheers!

Can you do a video on doing a final export in Pro Tools when hybrid mixing? I want to make sure I’m doing it the right way by getting my added effects and plugins into the same mix .wav file
hey again question for you...since I don't have a console.. when for example lets say I have a bass guitar track 3 and it has eq comp on it and other things on the insert.... Are you saying with the automation should I send that bass track to lets say a separate buss channel just to be able to automate it so it I wont just be pushing the compression harder.... was I hearing that correct lol... Is that the trick to automation??
Hi Tim Adams yes completely correct! If you take 3 sounds and eq them separately they should be bussed to one and the automation would be on the Bus so the compression on the bus remains constant. Do you bounce your tracks back into the daw with the same console back into separate tracks on your interface or do you bounce them to something else?
I have been wanting to track through a digital console but also mix on one from the daw. A bit confused on the workflow.

Hi ***** great question! When I mix my own recordings I usually pan them 100% L 100% Right because I record them in phase with the snare and I like the width it creates on the drums. If you just had a ONE nice physical channel strip or rack with a few units that you liked, could you run every sound through those prior to mixing in order to get the most of both worlds? I keep hearing that strictly ITB can't compete (which I'm skeptical), and it's become disheartening because I know the reality is I'll never have a console capable of hosing 50-100+ track projects I make :/ ...Any advice on this would help.

Great video (I have recently subscribed. Apologies if this has been covered or really basic and I have missed it but here goes. I assume you are connecting the DAW to the desk through your interface am I correct in thinking that you are limited to how many channels in the desk you can send things to by how many outputs you have on your interface?. My second question is it worth doing analogue summing with a lower end desk (mine is a Mackie 8 buss) would I see any benefits or does it need a high end desk like the SSL?ThanksDave

Hi, great video! I've watched part 2 too and really enjoyed them. Which faders are you mixing on? SSL or ProTools? Where are you applying automation? SSL or PT? If you apply fader moves/automation in PT I guess this would really mess with your desk compression?
Hi Warren, I've been looking at the Harman Soundcraft Signature 22MTK as a hybrid option in 2018.. with 22/24 in/outs via real world inputs and ITB i/o routing via USB2 including 9 Ghost pre's/3 band Saphire EQ/9 DBX limiters on mic/line mono in's as strip components for less than one SSL 4000G EQ Component! Currently retailing approx. [USD$800]. It seems to good to be true!? Whats your take on the quality of the analog circuitry inside something like this at this price? All bells and whistles on the surface and sub-par under the hood?? Would be quite appreciative to know your opinion or if you've heard any results from this hybrid desk. Thanks, G. Syd Aust.
Hi Warren! A friend asked me to master his project (he knows I have little experience at mastering but has faith in me). I'm sending from Logic Pro X 10.5.1 to a Neve Mastering EQ (same bands as a 1081) and back to Logic.
I sent a sine wave thru the eq and the stereo signal comes back slightly uneven in level, the R side down maybe .5 - 1db. How do I even out the signal? Thank You!!!

I have an old 40 channel Allen and Heath desk that I want to be able to track through into Protools before then having playback coming out of protools and back into the desk to mix. What outboard gear do I need to get to make this possible? Obviously I know I need some A-D/D-A converters...and quite a few of them most likely, but is that all I need. If so how do I input to these converters units as many that I've seen only input on ADAT connections? Any advice would be appreciated.

Not only does he really know what he's talking about; he's actually doing what a lot of us old farts always talk about, but never get around to doing: sharing our knowledge with the younger generation and keeping a love of the craft alive (No, I do not know or have any affiliation with the guy). As an old salty dog, I have to wonder why on god's green earth you'd want to poncify your mix with a Sissl desk, but that's just me. ;-) Keep up the good work Warren!

Is there a dramatic difference between Waves SSL colection and the real console? Also what about the NLS which has a SSL chanel/bus with drive and mic? I use these myself ,but i don't have the real thing to know. It's always something that interested me even though analog isn't needed just becuase of the work flow.
Hi blood lord that's a great question, honestly I love the Waves SSL Waves plug ins, however no they do not sound like my console. All my mixer friends LOVE the UAD SSL Plug Ins and tell me they sound amazing! I've yet to get them but I am getting them soon and will talk about them in future videos for sure! All the emulations sound great, but the real thing has no quantization to volume as in the box which i'm not sure is noticeable in a vst unless there is fast release on a comp or distortion from like an amp emulation. quantization is something digital and no vst can avoid because there are too many numbers from 0 to 1 that goes on infinitely like .1,.01,.001.0001 and so on which analog has no limits to in values. Those are the things that will dramatically make them not sound like the real thing on fast automation values on volume or even filters (Filter FM). It depends on bit depth ,but no matter how high it is, it will not equal the infinite values analog has. Thats something i explored with custom High speed LFOs (HFO's i guess) on midi automation and wondering why i got strange high freq content from errors and aliasing. Thats why i don't believe alot of advertizements where they say it sound exactly like the real thing and that's why i asked if there is any big differences compared to exact or close. If i had the money i would buy the real thing and use in moderation. Sorry that this comment got really long lol i wanted to explain the small spec details on facts between them for anyone else who is reading for whatever reason. hey warren, love all of your videos thank you for doing them. i've got a question about the overload or peaking on the console, i see you don't mind a little peaking on that kick but the question is how do i know when i do really need to back off the gain or when is it ok or not a problem, i am mixing through a digital console and i avoid the clip at all costs, is it ok to clip sometime? will the console damage? thanks a lot

Great Video! Although it didnt cover the topic it thought it did.
I want to learn how to mix OTB and then record and bounce this mix from pro tools, and im not sure how to do it.
I can hear the differences the parameters on the console make to the song, ie. the pan pots, EQ, inserts, volume faders etc, but when i do a mix OTB on the console and then bounce the track from pro tools the bounced song is unmixed. Like the tracks are completly dry as i have recorded them.
Is there a step im missing here? Is it something to do with the patch bay? do the all the channels, once mixed OTB, then need to be routed back into pro tools and re-recorded?
Novice here, so sorry for my lack of knowledge. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!
+Produce like a pro - Hi Warren im new to recording and mixing in a DAW, i currently don't have any external hardware for processing i've been watching all your videos researching hardware including the 500 series format and was wondering if you could give me any advice on what piece of equipment would be the most beneficial to my sound for tracking and mixing (EQ, Compressor or Summing mixer) all the music i listen to is analog form the 50's and 60's and i would like to get a piece of equipment to bring me some of that mojo for £1000 to £2000 if possible.

Produce Like A Pro Thanks, Ill be picking up a AWS16 pretty soon. I wasn't to sure about investing into one, but after watching this video and a few others I'm motivated to pull the trigger. I had a few questions about the AD/DA side of it. I plan to send my outs from my Apogee Symphony into the AWS, but when its time to print you I can do so with another converter? I recall you saying you printed via another converter, if so how? I mean how do I run Apogee out and print in with say a Burl? Also, how hard was it of a learning curve for you understanding the SSL routing? Its a bit intimidating going from DAW to SSL routing.
Hi ContraStudio88, interesting, let me know how you get on with it. I was looking at buying a AWS924 but I got this instead, because I wanted dynamics on every channel. To match that I was going to have to buy a lot separate compressors etc to match the 4k. However I would love to know what you think, they look very cool, very sleek and don't eat as much electricity. I personally print through a Lavry Blue, I love the sound of it, I'm sure a Burl would be great as well, but of course a pair of inputs on the Apogee would also sound great as well. Hi Warren, I had a question regarding the ssl E eq channel. There's more than one emulation of the Echannel. Waves, T-racks, UAD, steven slate. I am little intrigued because, when you analyse a boost at 3Kz on Green knob it is in fact more around 4K on the waves, and more around 2,4Khz on steven slate. Is it possible to have your view has you have a real ssl E console ?
Hi +Christian Loudieu Wow that's a fantastic question! I have used the Waves and I like it but it doesn't sound like my console, but it is a great way to get EQ, compression, gating and expanding! I love Steven's plugins, he's making wonderful sounding affordable plug ins! I have never directly compared his stuff, but I just find it to sound great immediately! Hi Anthony Gibney thanks for the great question. I am inserting a 560 on the Kick on channel 1 and another 560 on the snare on channel 2. I like to use a transient designer on the first 4 channels to shape the toms in particular. Bass has a little 100z lift from a Pultec. I have a Drums crush which is running in parallel and coming up on channels 29-30, but any parallel compression on the vocals etc I do ITB. Produce Like A Pro Sweet gear list (very slutty). The BAE stuff is incredible. That's brilliant that they are coming out with a version of 560 EQs. I have a BAE 10DC that I use all the time, it's one of my favourite compressors. Have you checked out the Kush Audio Electra?

hey, if i needed to record and mix through the same system how would i set it up so i can have microphones running through my interface, to pro tools, out of the interface to the console, would the last thing to do is print? i'm confused on how i should set up my system with my console. What if i don't have enough outputs to run all my tracks through to the console? What if my console only has mic ins/line and inserts; will i be able to use it? Should i even bother with a console and just get really nice compressors and eq's on the way in?

Great question! You don;t have to have a console, but if you do there are many different consoles that all kinds of options for monitoring and tracking.
