Martin from Wisely does vehicle reviews that have content that is actually useful - well done Wisely! I have seen so many EV reviews that are full of drivel and sometimes completely wrong information. Top job Martin!

Had one for six months now, and contrary to one person's comments, it is a very exciting drive (and I used to work at Ferrari!). The car is excellent in itself. A few things are clearly new model bad design, such as a dangerously aggressive lane assist, false collision protection triggering on back streets, locking up the car, the fact that brake lights show when you ease off the accelerator, makng you look like a nervous driver or annoying people who think you are brake checking them. Mine also has a key issue that apparently needs an update (in for service next week), but instead of flashing the issue up on the screen the car horn sounds twice! Would love to meet the person who designed that feature and ask them why they though it a good idea. 😅

Great video as always! It is amazing how close to the i3 the interfaces all are, but looks like it has been moved on with the learning from the i3. I'm also impressed with the economy and interior of this MG. Will be keeping the i3 as a future classic as I think they were so far ahead of their time and does everything we need from it - living in the countryside, it is great outside the city too!

Regarding your issue with the TJA (traffic jam assist), the newest update for the MG4 makes that a lot, a lot better. Highly recommend everyone gets that!

New subscriber here. What a refreshing change this review is: intelligent; relevant information.
I had an MGB GT in the late 70’s. A pretty thing but like most MG’s at that time, very sub standard and not at all sporting apart from the styling. Loaded with nostalgia though despite its many shortcomings.
The new owners of the brand don’t seem to be harking ‘back’ either, which is good. So SAIC pitching MG as a new ‘budget’ brand (as far as any EV just now can be, a way to go yet on prices) is about right. And with better quality than any MG ever had. I like this car.

Great review, as always, Martin - you get in to the important driver-focused details that other car 'journos' simply don't bother with... fab work, fella 😎
Being a current i3 Rex owner, would I have one...?
It would most certainly be on my shortlist if, for nothing else, because it's rear-wheel-drive.
I'm also thinking Smart #1 for the same reason, plus the high-quality, Mercedes-inspired interior - though likely to be in a completely different pricing 'ballpark'...!!
So, yes, thank you for your comprehensive, detailed real-world review.
All the best to you and Arthur for Christmas and the New Year 😊

Had our first i3 rex in 2017 change that in 2020 for a i3S we've and all so had 3 other i3's as company cars i3, i3S,i3 now a mini E. The 2020 i3S was changed to the MG Xpower last month such shame BMW stopped making and developing the i3 really wanted a BMW i3S M twin motor 50 or 60 kWh battery to come out but hey oh.
Used to have TJA in one of the i3's the MG is similar to that but it works above 35 mph.
By heck does that Xpower shift.
Yet aother fantastic video. Thank you.

Can I ask, is yours really resonant/bassy in the cabin over rougher tarmac/concrete. I get a huge amount of resonance in the cabin of mine (also about 3mnths old) and the pressure can occasionally get a little uncomfortable on my ears. I dunno if it's just something these do or I have doors/boot/panels that aren't fitted/sound proofed correctly so are moving/pumping the air. It worse than any vehicle I've previously owned, including vans which you would think would suffer as they are pretty much a large empty box.

If i had to get a car with larger range in the absence of an upgraded i3 there are very few I'd really consider and the MG4 is defnitely one of them Really good value and looks pretty good visually too. I also love they have some fabulous bright colours lol! For me after the i3 the one pedal driving would be the top of my list of requirements. I'd probably also consider the sporty-firebreathing version as I do like a bit of pep... th ei3 achieves being a very fun car by being lightweight but in the absence of a CFRP shell .. extra power will have to do I guess lol

Thanks for the review, as a current i3 owner I don't plan on changing cars any time soon. Also, when looking for the MG4 on the various websites, I saw a blurb about a 1 phase on board charger? That would be a dealbreaker that would erase any upsides of this car. Is this true? Does it only have a 1 phase onboard charger?

We looked at both the MG4 and the Dacia Spring. We eventually chose the Spring for various reasons, including the fact that MG were less than honest about the price. They are in a class way below the old British owned MG company.

    Greetings from Australia!
The MG4 released here a few months ago and has proven fairly popular. Our trim/feature levels seem to be different to the UK (and the software versions appear different too).
I have the base 51kWh LFP model and it has a rear wiper, interior handles above the doors, etc, which don't seem to be present on the UK variants.
There seem to be a lot of reports of dangerous LKA and AEB on the MG4. LKA on our model here is very gentle, it's never felt even remotely dangerous, however there have still been reports of false AEB events in Australia. It seems to be common across a range of manufacturers, both ICE and EV, not limited to just MG.
Newer software versions here let you change the LKA and AEB sensitivity from medium to low and the car will retain the setting which is good, however if you turn the features completely off it won't retain the setting.
One thing worth mentioning related to build quality - the car has a number of "piano black" trim components inside and out. They end up with scratch/swirl marks quite easily.

  • @richardpiper4828
    @richardpiper4828 Před 5 měsíci

A really good value EV and a surprisingly good drive but I think price has compromised polish. Interior rather bland and plasticy and SatNav/infotainment system and driver aids slower than the best in class. I believe that there will be an update later in the year to improve interior quality. 7 year warranty offers great reassurance. To my mind a bit more of a white good appliance than a aspirational choice.

Cheapest Trophy trim is about £22k used. That's still way above the level that most people can afford. Truly affordable seems to mean around £10k, or less. The perception of "cheap" will hopefully become more realistic over the next couple of years as smaller EVs appear on the market.
