    I was still in bed in the morning when i watched this video and i was shocked by it. I just started learning plc through your course on yt some weeks ago and it was totally disappointing to hear that i did everything wrong! I jumped out of bed at half of the vid and tried to listen more carefuly. And then i checked the calendar...

    In reality, Rockwell and all other PLC IDEs supported version control almost from the beginning.
    One thing that young programmers/developers do not understand is that the PLC IS the master branch. It is the most practical way to do it because users will always make edits to the PLC when there are bugs to fix. When I get to a jobsite, I should always upload from the PLC and compare to my offline. It is the only way that any edits to the working machine are captured.
    Although I would like there to be more in regards to being able to keep a log of each commit or download with comments on the PLC, there is still version control. Here are some similar features and how they present themselves with Logix or really any other PLC IDE.
    Making an online edit in Logix5000 you must accept a change in 3 stages. The name of the stages are different but they are effectively git add, commit, and push.
    Going online with no backup project and uploading ≈ git pull
    saving a project after going online ≈ get fetch
    going onlinen with a project already open ≈ get diff

    Hi Jakob , i am Siemens specialist and I was trying to relearn some of the Beckhoff again, after all this while I lost it, I had seen some of your videos about Twincat even trying to install the software to practice, then today I found this new shocking video and I kind of agreed with you in all terms, I feel same way as you do so now I do not know what to do, I am used to to program AB long ago, I know its easier than Siemens for me , but need to buy the software, need to think about it...

    It doesn't work though, so I just commit the acds.

    Hey, everybody! Today is April 1st. In the country where I lived this day is perceived as World Laughter Day. On this day it is customary to say all sorts of "not serious news" on purpose to draw attention to oneself.
    And if "without irony", I agree with almost all of Jacob's statements, especially with the fact that the people who create software for production are an elite caste of programmers. You can't compare them to the rest of us. The production process is first and foremost a responsibility to the personnel who maintain it. There is no right to make mistakes!
    At the end of my long comment I would like to thank Jakob for his personal contribution to the popularization of controller programming.

    Heh heh. I'm a sarky old git, so I spotted the twinkle of sarcasm in the eyes!!! Only realised the reason at the end! Duh.
    Very interesting to hear that PLC programming, or at least the approach, hasn't really changed in decades. Opto22 was an great system for non-PLC people. And then later Beckhoff did a similar 'modern' but in the guise of a PLC. Direct competition.
    Brilliant video, which it seems, still sums up the approach of many in the automation industry 🙂. Charging per tag for UI software... bet that's still a thing too!? 😂

      @JakobSagatowski  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I'd love to work with the Opto22/Epic Groove at some point. Seem them in the field multiple times, they look really neat! And the "per-tag" charging ... yes... it seems still to be a thing! (not with everyone though).

    Yeah Logix Studio was AUD20k last time I had to purchase it, no idea of the cost now they have or are moving to subscription model. It's not that bug free either, you would think at that price it would be rock solid, but it's never held a candle to something totally solid Unity Pro from Schneider for M340, who you would say could be considered a peer.
    I like Beckhoff, it is just not that popular in this part of the world, wish it was.

  • @sosondowah
    @sosondowah Před 3 měsíci

    You forgot the convenience of managing the Ethernet/IP networks with a robust(hardly crashes or hangs, daily), ultra-fast (ready in minutes!) and intuitive (given you've had training) Factorytalk Linx, which only takes a fraction (a convenient 4/4) of the lion's share of the machine's memory, independent of the actual available amount. It has been determined that the only deterministic network one needs is for good ol' boys anyhow.

    It would've been like trading a diamond for a turd. I am glad this is a joke, but still it rings true with many of the typical comments you see when people try to dismiss Beckhoff... I just got back home from the Beckhoff VIP+ tour. Believe me when I say you would be hard pressed to find a competitor that will best Beckhoff in the coming years. When it comes to automation, Hans Beckhoff figured it out. The special missing something that was always needed in automation, the next step; yeah, Beckhoff has it.

    You're a funny a guy Jakob, reverse psychology, nice try. If I were going to jump on a PLC mfg. I'd go to Siemens. But in the US, Rockwell does have the support and there are maintenance electricians that have no idea how to re-program machines supplied by others or don't want to spend the money on Rockwell software and this is where down time costs money and Rockwell does have the support needed in the US and know this firsthand. I called on an ARCO oil refinery, speaking to an engineer there, I was selling Siemens at the time, he told me if this plant goes down, I can have half a dozen integrators here in a half an hour verses I don't know when with any other processor manufacturer - point taken.
