Lock Up Anyone as an Unathletic Defender with Anticipation

- Defense is a game of strategy! Yes, being athletic helps heaps, but it's not a make or break situation. Anticipation and playing defense with an offensive mindset can completely change your game on the defensive side of the ball.

Love that you’re emphasizing defense, as someone who fits into the unathletic category it’s helping me a lot.
Every good baller is gunna tell you defense is key, defense is the most important part of the game
@@Rnjesus386 no it’s not, it’s scoring. Thats literally how you win the game
@@kevinc.cucumber3697 “Defense wins championships”. Don’t believe me? The 2004 Pistons team. 🤷🏾♂️
@@vizer4904 2015-16 Golden state warriors.
@@kevinc.cucumber3697 they also played defense…
Defense is really the key to be a good player, offense will come in time, but if your a lockdown defender, you’ll always get picked up
Lol yeah that's the only reason I get picked up. The muscle and hustle ftw
This is facts I hadn’t hooped since before Covid finally went to play couldn’t get to my spots , couldn’t shoot handles were off. But I looked great regardless because you’ll never lose the ability to lock shit up
“Chicks love the long ball!”
@@Malacheeeeunless your knees lose their composition 😢
I'm a physical lockdown defender but after I broke my hand I lost my handle and shooting (I wasn't much of an offensive player to begin with) and I couldn't make the team anymore.
Active defence. The player who's in control wins.
Yeah most people wait for the offense and then react and try to catch up
Def needed this
I was caught on an island the other day by a shifty guard and I didn’t shade him to any direction. Instead I had an open defensive stance and let him control me. I couldn’t anticipate any of his moves bc of how I was playing him and he got by me so easily.
In the moment I couldn’t figure out what to do but this video def addresses that
Few players understand that even on defense you can manipulate the other player into doing exactly what you want. Thanks for making this
Definitely not exactly what you want against a good offensive player. It's still a game of cat and mouse
@@gray_gogy you'd be surprised how far you can take it. Unless they're Kobe where even the perfect, in your D doesn't ultimately matter
I’m high school I was the backup point guard even tho I was more athletic then our starting guard I was shorter. That being said if the game was close coach would put me in just to play defense on their best player and I would usually lock em down pretty well. Defense is fun and not enough younger players work on it or enjoy it. I sure did.
I was doing this the other day against some taller athletic guard it I knew he would go drive to the right since I opened my defensive stance on purpose to make him go there bc I hate his down hill drive with the cross jab move where I have to guess which way he would drive. SO yh your method works
Man this is exactly how steps curry defends and he’s pretty solid staying in front and contesting
Steph gets cooked but this is a great video
First person I've seen who understands. Defending is all about anticipation. When you're defending this game can be like a really fast pace board game
He went 😮 on the first shot 😂
Appreciate the advice coach!
Haha nothing I could do about that!
What I love the most about this video is the fact that they showed they missed their shots. I am sure they are excellent players, but this little detail shows that they're actually trying to improve and isn’t perfect, a really comfortable concept to learn for a beginner of any talent.
U deserve a comment to your dedication to this sport brother. This is great advice. I force guys baseline all the time. Even if they are explosive, u can press and push them a little against the line which slows them down tremendously. If they spin, there's only one direction they can spin and if they pump fake, they're usually shooting w the backboard as another defender! Learn young guns!
Force them to do what they are bad at
problem is you've got to be either pretty athletic or pretty strong to pull this off
@@xum0007oh no you have to hustle in basketball 😯😯
If you're trash then you're trash, big whoop. Hit the gym and do cardio and explosive strength workouts. I was unathletic till I started doing powercleans and squats to increase my vertical, naturally I became more explosive and could cut infront of most players faster than me. A few ankle sprains and rehab later and my feet got used to supporting my new strength. Its all about effort
@@sfsaviation i agree but I wanted to clarify that unlike learning anticipation, physically forcing people into comfortable positions requires athleticism as well as brains
as an unathletic defender u gotta use ur hands more often as well. Be sneaky with checks to the midsection area if you get blown by and you can recover
A hang dribble would shift any lock down defender. Key to defense is in your stance and quick feet.
Nice tips. I play against alot of younger and faster players and generally am able to contest well. My defense and hustle is why they pick me up at the local gym.
Legit never thought about defensive jabs against quick offensive players. Your on some Caruso shit. Thank you for this 🙏
Great technique. Not stuck bow legged and squared up. Very few on ball defense instruction videos, and most assume you will want to let the offense dictate the movement, which isn' t defense. Very few force offense to react to defense. But that is the only kind of defense that works. You know your own lower body better than anyone. Use it, move your feet, jab, fake, and change rhythm. Cassius Clay never stopped moving his feet. Nice!
I discovered the anticipation concept myself through games right before I came across this video, but I’m glad I did because it helps me to be reminded & not to change my use of technique.
Instantly subscribed. Thank you for adding value to the world and the people seeking knowledge.
Those little hops you do to switch directions are used by soccer/football goalies when anticipating a free kick/goal kick. It's SO HARD to learn and use it which just continues increasing my passion for defense
It's so nuanced and the most important part of the game imo
That’s a good time to do a crossover when both running the same direction
This ia what I learned after higschool. Been doing good ever since.
The jab is a defensive weapon too! Make them go to the weak hand and anticipate to get in front. Kind of like how you would sell a v-cut.
Do a video on how to be a better facilitator please and thanks for your content
Something I like to do in conjunction with anticipation is to use my arm to counter their off arm shove. A lot of the time it gives me just enough to be propelled right in front of their driving route without overshooting myself.
He is right. To be a great defender you must master the art of “Anticipation” and “Manipulation “. Anticipate where your opponent wants to go and manipulate them into going where you want them to go.
Defence wins championships. An additional aspect you may want to consider in game situations is to force your offensive player to his weak side or your strong defensive side. Try to make him terminate his dribble then leave him for your help defence (mostly your big) to block or rebound. Understanding defensive strategy is like a beautifully choreographed dance. My two cents.
I do agility ladders to get quick feet. Im almost always faster than who I’m guarding. So when they move , my feet are quicker , so I’m always right there with them.
Agility are trash tbh it worsens your feet speed n isn’t true agility
@@justinwright3977 tyreek hill does them all the time and he’s the fastest player in the NFL and probably faster than everybody in the NBA.

The way im looking at this.. the anticipation can be used as a feint (pump fake) to getting them to move in a direction you want to them to go to.. and if you know how they play and what wepaons they have in their bag you'll be able to get steals and possibly some blocks off
Look for his legs always and wich crossover he likes to use then test him with a few jab in the cross area then make him go opposite side of dominant hand and push for more under the basket to take a way easy back board layups
Putting ur eyes in the right spot helps too. Can’t tell from the vid but looking at someone a little lower (waist) than what’s natural for most. Takes out their ability to head fake you out!
Great coaching
Bro don’t give out all my secrets
Great tips!
Very solid. Offense is always gonna trump defense in basketball, but you gotta at least try to make a guy make a decision to give yourself a chance.
Goodluck w that 🤝
Klay Thompson strategy 💯
I tell ppl this. Keep your hands out and touch them if they are shooters. Most people hate contact. Play spots on the court. In most cases it’s best to play players to their weaknesses bc most ppl are one hand dominant. People who go with their off hand will usually eventually go back to their dominant hand or do a step back shot. If a player drives past you beat them to the spot and don’t try to chase them but be aware if their shifty. I guarantee if you do these your defense will get better over night.
This part here- I love being a defensive player this typically how I can shut down that one guy at the rec who’s team has just been running the court it’s all mind games
Good tip
Although game time is a little different, if you are just practicing, keep your head below the level of the defender. Ball handlers who have to pay attention to what you do beneath their natural field if vision miss their shot, can't dribble past you, etc. Practice staying lower than they are.
This is facts. Make them react to your defense instead of you reacting to their offense
Aight this shit is solid advice. Really appreciate it.
Key word : anticipation
Yh if your defender does that snatch back or punch dribble and hesi or whatever combo crossover you want. OR JUST Drive in to a post position in the key and use your pivot foot to get a bucket
I love playing defense
This is the exact reason I got my scholarship back in the day.
Lock up anyone is crazy I’d say get a stop because sometimes ain’t shit you can do about being small lol… SOMETIMES
anticipation will get ya ankles broken.
That's why you gotta scout opponents and watch film
Honestly though, playing defense against someone who really knows how to create their shot is almost impossible, if they can shoot. You can try to get them to go where you want to, but they're just gonna read your movements and create space accordingly. All you need to do is get a defender moving and take advantage of their momentum, and whenever they bite, that's when you really attack. If a defender tries to follow you down on a drive, use their momentum against them with an effective snatch back or step-back and it will probably create enough space to get an easy jumper off, and if the defender tries to recover, well then you simply throw their momentum right in their face yet again and explode to the hoop right past them, and you use the same idea side to side with crossovers and such.
The best defenders are the ones who can make a ball handler uncomfortable, doing their best at preventing them from cleanly putting the ball on the floor, interrupting their dribble and rhythm, or forcing them to dribble in a way they're not comfortable. You can try to force them to go in a direction they don't want to, but that only works against guys who don't know how to get to their spots, or don't have enough practice that they favor one side of the court, and maybe in low levels of basketball you can get away with that, but at higher levels that's not gonna be the case.
At the very top level, though, offense will always have the advantage…especially one on one.
For sure!
This is what I needed to see.
Never want to have both feet off the ground, recipe for disaster
Nice
Don't cross your feet and don't open your hips, shuffle.
My homeboy ain't in that 90% he be brakin ankels
I do this everyday. Impossible to do it when someone has a killer 1/2 dribble pull up
Meanwhile I just be constantly poking the ball
Great tip coach ima prolly use this keep it up
A good offensive player will attack your front foot and hit you with a mean crossover, you won’t know what hit you. It’s a good tip but it won’t work against everyone
Hip checks hip bumps knock them off rhythm fake them out when they thunk you'll touch em
Defense is what makes the difference between CZcams/content creator and professional
Study Jrue Holiday and Scottie Pippen
I’ll just drive to the corner and do a pull up midrange
Game!
are those shoes anta? what's the model?

So basically you kind of trick them into the way you want them to go

@@ByAnyMeansBasketball Thanks this will help me a lot the second day of my tryouts is coming up soon
Saying what the attacker is going to do out loud is hilarious, and works as well. They will just stay still almost every time lol
You fouled him 😂
I'm to slow as soon as he gets past me I can't catch up
It’s cool till you have too guard the quick step back dudes soon as you hit that jab trying to push them one way basically putting yourself to one side of them it’s over
that very first clip of you taking contact having your arms inside, thats a foul
This actually legit
How i play defense, it doesnt always work but i get more stops then not
Man my friend play Defense like this and there aint nothing i can do. Pls somebody help me👀😬
Idk man I’m pretty fast with the ball and I jump with a knee up. So anything in front of me that doesn’t move is getting smashed
I mean as a defensive player myself I see where you’re coming from with this but this really would only work on the lower levels because they think simply . And that’s because most offensive players are taught to attack the high foot and they would kill you with a dribble cross with multiple counters when you do this and even if they don’t at higher levels they would never just straight drive when you do this they will take that first step infront of you Initiate contact so you cant just rush them and them put you in jail so you can’t get position now you are stuck behind the offensive player and it’s a free bucket
How to lock em up ? Pull out a book and make them read a paragraph in front of the gymnasium audience. Og°

Can you make one at least
Put the body on people within reason, never fall for a ball fake...and make them take the jumper, the percentages are in your favor
I do this all the time. It's a cheat code. I've had players tell me to just guard them normally.
Se ve violento 😂
Bro im unathleteic and can confuse the shooter instantly lol
Good luck giving Giannis an open lane 😂 I can see how this would be a good strategy though.
I’d say I’d be justified in changing my approach when I’m guarding a top 5 NBA player who is a foot taller than me 😂
Which would likely be “foul or get out of the way” lol
If you try this on a good ball handler you getting cooked
Don't listen to this guy. You're going to end up getting crossed and your ankles broken. Plus he's fouling on top of that.
All fun and games till u get yo shit shifted🤦♂️😬
Yup. Indeed. It happens if you’re playing good defense. Best defenders on earth get caught at times 🤷♂️
Just means you’re playing good defense
True talk bro. But if you're beat, let it go. Better you lose the steal than an ankle or hip. 🤣
Great video!! Also only 10% of the world!!!! 10%!!!!!!!! Of the World “Earth” is left handed if u ain’t making dude go left idk what u doing!!!

what nba players are good at this so i can watch film
Davion Mitchell, Jrue Holiday, believe it or not-Steph, Marcus Smart
Defence is easy... It's not rocket science
Looks like you got beat every time. Plus if you jab your leg at me, im attacking that leg and you’re toast
Yeah right
Chess not checkers
You reach way to much always have your hand on the defender. First when you defende you should always have you hand up or offensive player could have foul at any giving time
It also helps to work on your core strength to absorb contact. Learn to hold a plank until Jesus returns 😂😂😂.
Lol sounds good but it also sounds like a recipe to get crossed and dropped off if u dnt know what u are doing
Yep, that’s why you practice it and learn what you’re doing 😉
