Basketball favors quicker players. And one of the toughest things to do in basketball is guard somebody who is quicker than you. Klay Thompson proved to be the one defender on the Warriors who could do anything to slow down Kyrie Irving in the 2017 NBA Finals, despite giving up a lot of quickness to Kyrie. In this video, we’ll breakdown a few of the key tactics Klay used and that you can take and put in your own game so that you can guard players who might have a quickness advantage over you.

What sucks about guarding someone quicker is when your team doesn’t play TEAM DEFENSE.
To all the young cats, MOVE THE BALL AROUND ON OFFENSE & PLAY HELP D ON DEFENSE. That’s basketball and it allows EVERYONE on the team to get into a rhythm.
Thanks for the short memory thing for defense and offense I be thinking bout that stuff too much sometimes
same vro
Dead ass happened to me today 💯
great tips! I think one thing that helps me guard quicker players is either guarding them closer (maybe not too close) or farther away (basically not a normal distance).
You either want to take away that first step so they can't use all their speed into their first step, or back off and have a cushion so you can meet them at the spot.
What if he has a shot
@@zachbaquiran7796 try meeting him earlier, either off the catch or if he's bringing it up the court above the three point line.
Defensively what i like to do is keep great scorers guessing. Switch up my stance, my style, etc. EVERY offensive player is about having good rythm.
Sometimes I like to backup and try to take a charge or you can go for a strip (Iguodala style). Sometimes I'll shade him one way to get along side him. Sometimes I'll sit in my stance and just wait on his jumper. Sometimes I'll just be more aggressive and try to make them over dribble.
So many techniques you can do.
@@jordan7985 thx man
@@zachbaquiran7796 of course man.
Most important thing is mindset. Even if they are bigger, stronger, faster, more skilled than me, i really believe there is always something I can do.
Jordan true man mindset the only thing holding people back
1 predict the players movements
2 force the player into uncomfortable positions to shoot
3 hand placement
4 blocking there vision
Thank you Coach! This is helpful as always 💪🏼
CONGRATS ON 7K!!!
really helpful dawg...keep it up
this was really helpful i was struggling with deffence for a long time and when someone does a good move on me that makes me look bad i loose my confidence but now i know how to play defence better
This video was honestly really helpful and amazing thanks man really
Smart gonna try this 💯
Bro thx so much for the advice on trying to block their vision instead of the shot.
For sure!
Thanks so much for this video I am a taller shooting guard/ small forward and many times I have to guard point guards or small and quick player. They often just get one step and have a advantage on their drive
Bro I just found ur channel and it’s so good. It’s crazy how you only have 7k subs
Thank you!!
Excellent video
Great vid!
I am going against 6th and 7th graders tomorrow and I am in 5th grade. I dont want to end up fouling them and playing bad D. This vid helps a lot. thx!
I’m in 7th and play against highschool freshman and sophomore, I’m the almost as tall and strong as them😂, averaged 23 7 and 2 last season. Try to be a great shooter if Dey is taller than you, also be great at floaters.
Thank you so much
Can you make a video about working on your game in Winter?
Yesssssss
You probably need to exercise your breathing because breathing in winter get tough and you get tired easily.
@@rivera8109 this isnt demon slayer bro this is real life
Nba: banned handcheck
Nba player: sometimes still use it
Thanks God is Great
thank u so mutch
Klay got injured because he had to carry the team on defense for 5 finals runs especially when KD came. He was almost always the guy they counted on to make the defensive stops that won them their games
Thank u for the vid coach also pls can u make the Emmanuel maldonado workout ive been waiting for months
Just watch jayson tatum workout
really great
It helps to have 3-4 inches on them like klay over kyrie

Can you do nba player jump shots for next series?
I'm trying try out for my high basketball team do you get more playing time when your a good denfinerd
Great tip! Now I can guard Kyrie Irving.
2:08 how is it different from hand checking?
Klay is an unbelievable defender
So if you are kyrie how would you counter good defense like this? But I appreciate this defensive video also 🖤💯
Always thought the same om this defense videos 🤣
Well if you watch the clips at the end of the vid, Kyrie is so good that a lot of the time he’s going to score no matter how good the defense is. As is the case the case with some of the best scorers. The difference is, he had to work hard for those buckets and the shots were more difficult than normal. In terms of how to beat good defense, it really comes back to each individual situation. It varies. Depends on how they closeout, which side they try to force you to, where the help defense is, etc. Kyrie is great at shifting his defender and using changes in speed/height to beat guys. He also is great at using the defenders momentum against them when driving downhill by using stepbacks/punch drags/snatches.
Also you have to see how the defender is playing you. If he tight on you blow by him for the drive for example
Draw help defense and pass
Draw help defense and pass
Fast guys always hard this helped
God Bless
How about the 2016 finals
When I use my inside hand to creat contact (looks just like how klay does it) I always get called for blocking foul when people watching and players on the court all agree there was no foul just good d…🤦🏻♂️
Use your inside hand against me I'll grab it on my way past and if u push me becuz of it I'll go to the line
thanks man, im short and slow but its ok i gonna keep working my ass off till i get to the nba.
Imma aww you there brothee

im tall but im lanky so im awkard i can play likea gaurd but i have trouble gaurding short fast guys.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Can you make a vid in draymond green and how he guards taller players
maybe the 2,19cm wingspan? Plus elite defense
@@Black-vi3zg "Plus elite defense" yeah thats what hes asking for insight in bro
everyone i play at school is fast and shifty and it makes them hard to guard and contest their shots so i hope this helps
An old basketball coach told me this
When they are small and fast go slow on them and other way around
I feel like Kyrie Irving is more crafty than quick because he has to use so many moves just to get by his defender whereas the guys that are quick only use one or two.
Great tips and when i play defense i switch sides alot and quickly and it throws them off sometimes
Don't do that a guard like me would abuse you
@@hexagonoctogon3140 how so ive played against alot of quick guards. They think im giving them a side but i switch back quick so then they get thrown off
@@massb7428 I would see you doing that and bait you and be crossing you over at will and honestly I wouldn't do that after seeing you do that I'd just post u up everything you be fun to play with and I'm a quick fast twitch guard but I play on tendencies I study people so it would take 2 seconds for me seeing u do that to exploiting it u can't give me any side you'd have to learn to play me straight up not not far and Def not too close
@@hexagonoctogon3140 yea you can probably beat be a few times maybe but you cant post me up or back me down
@@massb7428 I studied kobe and Michael and Hakeem for post up you would have to contend with many moves
Isn’t it illegal to use hand checking??
Does klay use hand check??
He’s not extending his arm he is just placing it on the player hips this isn’t a foul
It don’t even destroy my confidence it’s just I know I can stop it and I get so frustrated 😂
I’m getting flashbacks to the moment where he decided to switch on the finals
Thanks Coach. This is Maxwell. This is my new profile. You can call me Max or Maxwell. It doesn’t matter. Thanks for the vid. I play AAU so I play a lot of guys that are quicker than me, so thanks
💪🏽💪🏽
2:25 How isn't this a handcheck?
im a sg im the best defender and scorer on my team i wanna make the league but i have problems gaurding short fast guys
Work on it you’ll do it
Coach Ethan, the last time I forced a defender to drive one side, he drove over my top foot and I got blown by. How can I prevent this?
Good question, follow me on Instagram and I’ll post this breakdown soon. I probably could’ve expanded upon that during this video. If you go to 2:37 and watch the clip, you’ll see that this happens to Klay. He responds by keeping contact with that forearm while he quickly flips his hips and slides with Kyrie, forcing the tough shot. This is one scenario, another option is to position yourself in a way that completely forces him to go that way. There’s a couple details we can look at when it comes to that, and like I said I’ll post that on Instagram.
@@VisionDrivenBasketball Thanks man, I appreciate it!
Never stop the grind!
@@VisionDrivenBasketball I thought using your forearm was Illegal is it ?
Hes better now tho
Well, Klay said that Kyrie is the hardest player to guard...
Kyrie literally fried klay 😂😂
does weight affect your jump shot?
What do you mean
@@VisionDrivenBasketball like when you gain weight, does your jump shot get worse or does it stay the same? just asking
@@shishirkhadka4277 as long you are consistently working on your jumpshot it will be fine. That’s assuming most of that weight is muscle.
@@VisionDrivenBasketball ok thanks. hypothetically, what happens if it's fat? like im not fat, i was wondering
@@shishirkhadka4277 your jumpshot would probably still be fine but your overall performance level, endurance, likelihood of injury, etc, would be the issue and that in turn could end up affecting your shot.
I’m playing against a guy that I’m yet to get a single W on. I’ve lost 11 games which is why I came here.
Watching Kyrie play ISO is infuriating
No one cant guard kyrie
Exactly kyrie is better now than he was then
So I dont think that'll happen
That’s not always true
Let’s get one thing straight okay Thompson is not holding kyrie lmaooo
Have faith in God
Kyrie still cooked him
It’s ways to guard kyrie
Stop like kyrie is unguardable klay guarding him is not nun crazy
Most of these are fouls
