Yo if you get beat and if offense is in front of you u take ur hands off to avois foul call, but if he gets deep in the paint and is front of you put both hands up and don't give up what would you do if he's in front of u /u get beat but u need to stop him without a foul call what should you do attack outside hip/ block?what are the option then?
Jay Money i mean sure you can tell your team to do that, but will any of them have the heart to sacrifice their body when up by alot? Roberson had that is what he was trying to say lol
Max Durk yeah but what the dude's trying to say is that being fit and having endurance goes a long way in being a good defender. It's great being intelligent and knowing where you should be but if you ain't got the energy and drive to keep on running, knowledge ain't doing jackshite for you
let’s just be honest high school and middle school coaches may say that they care about defense but they really don’t, they only care about people who can put points on the board.
What I do as a GOOD defender( ppl tell me im a good defender) When defending, my knees are bent and in some situation I pivot my foot back and front, side ways. My footwork is pretty decent, I Hardly mess up myself and really helps in adjusting to the opponents moves. Don't just stand and defend. When unsure of what the person will do i keep a hand close to the ball or at them to navigate and anticipated pressure on them. Helps me keep a hand on them assisting me when they decide to drive or make a move, my arm is there in their way. If I am more on 1 side on the court. lets say left side. I put my right foot infront so I'm kind of in an angle. This makes it easier to force the player into 1 way and become easier to defend. When contesting a shot, If I am close enough to the opposition I will jump high and put my arms up to scare them and shaken up their confidence. If they manage to create space for a jumper, I run towards them with my hands up( no jumping) as a last resort as there isnt anything to rlly do. You wanna contest every shot, close, far, even if they beat u by a bit. Trust it really helps Play a bit physical, it's hard to be a good defender and not physical at all. It provides pressure, it doesn't allow them to do what they want especially things they are comfortable with, which makes them uncomfortable and uneasy when on offense. Helps also To block shots & contest shots Don't bite on every move they do. Many people like to spam dribble or hit you with a counter dribble every time. If they make 4 dribble moves, defend on 2 or 1. You'll be surprised how much easier it is when you aren't trying to guess and navigate every slight move. Let's say you trying to be really precise on defending, all it will do is become easier to go by. Faints, fake pass, hesi, especially by people who know how to do it, will always trick up Lastly when driving, always put your body to your defender and keep your hands up. Driving is the one thing where you can put the most contact on a player than anywhere else. So use it, and do it all them time when someone drives. If they go pass you. Slack of your hands on them and time a block or a contested hand on their layup/drive Thanks for reading XD👍
@@ALIEN.0708 Personally, I don't guard too close or too far EVER. In the middle. But you should aim to scare, or contest a shot after a spin move, as the person doesn't have enough time to recover and finish well. Sometimes the person can just beat you, but it's how u recover.
Klay's an average 1-1 on defender, but a better team defender. He got so much credit those early years in GS, because Steph played zero defense, so he made Klay look like he was all world, just because he actually tried.
I‘m a defensive player on my team and I live locking up players. That first part got me soooo hyped because that’s me 1to1. Nothing can make stop playing defense. I think imma watch that part of the video at least before every game🔥 My hands started sweating watching this.
You could tell sexton intimidated Josh Hart the shot he took. That was a very low percentage shot and he knew it. Sexton is a very good example of someone who play with heart
I have so much respect for players like roberson. people overlook him because he can’t shoot and he’s not the greatest offensive player or scorer. players who hustle and try their hardest on every single play are the best.
Thank you so much Ryan. I’m a 6’2 8th grader who used to struggle playing D against the high schoolers at the gym. But using the tips u gave me in this video locked up and am doing so much better on D. Thank you so much ❤ I watch this video a ton and I am doing soooo much better.

Hehe reminds me of when my coach called a timeout to tell us no more turnovers and the first thing I did was lose the ball, during the fast break I smacked that ball so damn hard out of that one kids hands and it was kewl

Ashani Francis you are exactly the type of ppl I’m talking about. Great offense = works in the regular season. Great defense = works in the playoffs. Take ya L
Confidence, energy, technique, heart, and most of all not worrying about getting crossed people be worried about getting embarrassed they don’t play defense
Klay Thompson is such an underrated defender, especially before those injuries he was locking guys up fr but people only give him credits for his shooting, and when he has a bad shooting game they say he sucks. They never look at his defense at all
That’s why defense is one of my favorite parts about basketball. It’s not glamorous at all but it’s so vital. Crazy how some dudes just accept that they’re only good on offense and give up and don’t put any effort on defense.
I totally agree with all you said, but what sucks as someone that plays defense with all my heart, is being surrounded by teammates that show less than half effort I make, especially when playing pick up I get that it's not always everyone's thing to play defense, but the least you can do is find a role, rebound, contest for the ball, avoid the offense getting to the paint, something. Not just linger and wait to receive the ball when we go on offense. Not cool
In Ncaa u can only touch the offensive player 1 time while they have the ball. It have to be a quick touch also. This makes defense a much more difficult. You’re basically playing with both hands behind your back.
Stay on your man before he gets the ball takes a toll on the opponent mentally and physically..face guard.. move your feet brace for contact.. that more than half the battle there

FoolishGenius yeah he was trying to get kawhi injured smart
At the end of the day, the most important thing about defense is actually trying and having enough energy to chase ppl around for a long time
DANtheMANofSIPA No, its intelligence and chemistry. Knowing coverages and where to be off ball is more important than anything you could do on ball.
Max Durk
yeah but what the dude's trying to say is that being fit and having endurance goes a long way in being a good defender. It's great being intelligent and knowing where you should be but if you ain't got the energy and drive to keep on running, knowledge ain't doing jackshite for you
