/ @ajrestoration Ladies and Gentlemen welcome back to part 2 of the EC10 restoration!
I have had this motor in my backyard for quite some time now. I have been itching to restore it since I got it. I decided it was now or never. I have a special place in my heart for these small engines and I am taking my time on this one as I really want it to turn out great (hence the two-part video)
I hope you enjoy the video.

Subaru Robin History
The history of FHI and its companies starts with the Nakajima Aircraft Laboratory, which was Founded in 1917. Airplane engines led to smaller-displacement powerplants (such as motorboat engines).
In the mid-1950s, a group of companies formed FHI. Its innovative capabilities led to the manufacture of Japan's first jet engine called the "JO-1."
The Robin brand first appeared in 1956 with the first of its general-purpose, air-cooled, gasoline engines. Capabilities and capacity grew, and by 1978, one million "EY 18" four-cycle engines had been produced. In 1989, the "EC 10" two-cycle engine reached the one-million-unit threshold.
FHI opened the Saitama Plant in 1993, and its annual production rate for Robin engines is approximately one million units.
Quality by Design
Another similarity between Subaru Automotive and Subaru Robin is their insistence on quality products. Development and manufacturing teams meet on a regular basis to exchange information to help improve quality. They take into account test results and customer comments to help make improvements.
During the manufacturing process, every engine is tested for performance and quality manufacturing.
As a result, the full range of approximately 2,000 Subaru Robin engines continually evolves to be more environmentally friendly and quieter.
Another process used by Subaru Robin that's similar to Subaru Automotive is its recycling of shipping containers and parts. Shipping crates and frames along with packaging materials are reused or recycled.
Subaru Robin America
Although engines are not manufactured at Robin America headquarters in Lake Zurich, Illinois, as many as 30,000 units are stored in the facility. Also, the building has a year's supply of parts for engines that are in the field.
Subaru Robin and Subaru Automotive use separate distribution channels in the United States. But, across the board, Subaru Robin and Subaru Automotive exhibit similar characteristics: quality, innovation, technology, environmental responsibility, and responsiveness to the customer.
Nice job! I have to admit, in 40 years of working on engines of all types, this is the first 2 cycle I've seen with an oil sump. Thanks for the video!
It is quite unique I have to admit!
I have rebuilt a few two strokes, something I do is soak the muffler, completely submerged in a container of diesel over night. Then after draining it I burn off the remaining diesel and oil residue inside. It cleans them out like a treat giving improved flow.
That is a good idea!
Great job on the engine, it looks good on that old mower deck.
Looks like it cranked very easy and sounds good too. Nice project. Thumbs Up!
Amazing job on this restoration! Love the sound of it!
Thank you very much!
That's a good sounding little 2 stroke. Great job. 😁👍
1:55 now you can use your lawnmower as a barbecue grill.
Great job! Robins are great little motors and easy to work on.
Nice work mate! Glad to see this one finally running!!
Excellent job bro.
Now that looks like an engine i would modify and install on a custom 3 weeler trike.
Very interesting re-build. Fairly certain I would have been stumped with the oil in the bottom end. Also all the bearings here are either needle or roller ball bearings. Something a 4 stroke engine rarely come with. This should give good long life. Also, not sure if you plan to use it as a power plant for a lawn mower, but a 2 stroke runs at a higher rpm and also gets double the power strokes of a 4 stroke motor, making it a step ahead on a 4 stroke. Oil burning is what killed this idea for the USA and I think the EU geography also. But in spite of this, I like the idea. How much fuel does a lawn mower actually use over it's life anyway?? certainly less than a week of use on an automobile.
>2 stroke runs at a higher rpm and also gets double the power strokes of a 4 stroke motor, making it a step ahead on a 4 stroke
Double the power strokes doesn't mean two strokes have a leg up. Two stroke engines are grossly inefficient, the Robin EC10 being a prime example. There is a direct drive and a reduction drive model for 4,000 or 1,600 RPM operation and both put out a maximum of 3 hp for continuous operation. A four stroke engine of similar displacement of around 100CC is from 6-20 HP. The only type of four stroke engines it'd have a leg up on are old L head or T head engines.
>but a 2 stroke runs at a higher rpm
Barely. A small four stroke is in the 3,600-3,800 range, the EC10 is 4,000. Two strokes sound a lot faster than they are because of the 2x number of power strokes.
Interesting… a piston-ported 2-stroke with oil in bottom end. Was this common? I’ve never worked on a Robin before.
Very cool restoration, by the way!
I don't think its all that common, I think the Yamaha MT110 also has a oiled bottom end.
You are right. The Yamaha MT110 also has oil in.
I also agree. Unusual to see oiled bottom end on a 2 stroke. I do like it however, as I think this makes for a much more robust and long life engine, something that 2 strokes are NOT well known for.
Nice job. It runs very well. :)
Nice job on registration a vintage lawn mower engine
You put the piston on backwards. You should fix it ASAP or the rings will destroy the exhaust port!
Came out really well :)
Thank you so much!
I like your methods in painting that was cool and nice restoration
Thank you so much 😀
Sounds like a mini trail bike or a big chainsaw. Nicely done!
It does!
Good video,as usual.bringing back to life to carry on for more years to come.keep up what your doing.👍👍👍😎😎😎
That's the plan!
Outstanding restoration, well done 👍

Baie dankie man haha
Good morning from Southeast South Dakota. If you were close enough. I would like to have a 1957 boat motor rebuilt.
I would love to do that. Too bad I am so far away!

Grandiosissima restauração 👏👏👏 sucesso a você 👍👍👍🇧🇷
Great restoration - looks amazing and it seems to work well too! Is it just me or does the engine look roughly the same shape as a toilet? Maybe the manufacturer had a sense humor? Either way, great video! 👍
It does have a odd shape actually hahaha
I really do enjoy all your restorations. I do have a question, 'Where do you find all that you restore?'
Most of it I find either at the metal recycling yard or Facebook Marketplace.
Next video, please restore the body of the machine, and it’s color should be red or complete white.
The chassis was just for the test. The motor is now in my display unit.
Cool 😎
That engine was a perfect fit for that classic mower 😎👌👍
Well, can't you pour more cleaning fluid ?? poured two drops and that's it ...
R20 for a litet of petrol in south Africa
Do you pre start the engine 🤔 and make adjustments?
No that was the first start.
Ai A. J. Dit is weer een van jou pragtige werke jy is n boffin
Baie dankie Tom, ek wardeer!
Did you use dynamometric wrench?
No.
Excelente muito bom !
Pretty good job, but those taper-head , flat-head screws attaching the recoil unit look awful! there is no way those are original.🤨
I like them, they are copper and I like the color it gave to the project. Not original, not the ideal screws to hold the recoil unit, but i like them.
Maravilha AJ! Gratidão
waar is die coilwire grommet dan?
Hy het nooit een gehaad nie, ek kon ook nie stock erens kry nie.
Parte is skaars. Ek soek nou n coil vir myne. Dit bly saam met die Yamaha MT110 die beste 2 stroke masjiene

You live in a very noisy neighbourhood 🤔
Its not always noisy, Mostly I make the noise hahahaha
