Crosslap joints allow you to bring two pieces of wood together on an even plane. This short video from The Honest Carpenter will show you how to cut crosslaps in thicker lumber like 4x4 posts!

How-To Cut Crosslaps:
1) Lay out the position of your crosslaps on the two pieces of lumber you would like to join. (Use a tape measure and speed square to create one side of your crosslap layout, then a piece of stock to scribe your other side.)
2) Set the depth of your cut by finding the center line of your lumber stock on the adjacent face of the material. Set your circular saw depth to this mark.
3) Use a speed square as a guide for your circular saw sole plate--cut the "perimeters" of your crosslaps. Try to split your pencil lines up the center.
4) Begin making cut passes through the stock between the perimeter cuts. Space cuts about 1/8" apart.
5) Break out standing fillets with a large screwdriver.
6) Clean the floor of the crosslap with a 1" chisel (keep bevel up)
7) Test fit with a piece of stock
8) Lay out and cut second crosslap on second piece.

Great video and very instructional. To make the identical cuts faster, you could have clamped 2-4 pieces together and just pass the saw through them.

very interested in how timber frame houses are built. Can you do a video on the framing for those kinds of buildings?
What do you call it when you cut both sides to where you’re able to stack 2x4s on top of each other at the cross joints like Lincoln logs? The closest on CZcams I’ve been able to find are dovetail cross joints. I want to do something like that but simpler. I don’t have the tools or the mathematical “smarts“ to do dovetails.
I prefer a rasp. Quicker and cleaner IMO
I was planning on making wood cross using 4×4 10' tall when I make the second cut to give the width of the cutout for each piece to go together should the cut be right on the pencil line or to the side of the line so doesnt make it too tight or too loose when joining wood together?
Good Video... Food for thought. Get a dado blade, it will do a better job of cleaning out these joints, and less chisel work. Keep up the videos. Good job.

Thank you, I need to make identical half lap joints in 4x4 inch timber. I have eight 1.3m lengths of 4x4 inch timber. I need to make four wooden crosses from these eight timbers, each cross joined together using a half lap joint as you demonstrate, so I need to cut out eight half rectangular joints, or tenches as you demonstrate, a lot of work !!!! Therefore, to speed things up, can I align all 8 timbers side by side and run a track saw guided by a rail to cross cut the shoulders of the lap joints on all eight timbers in only two cross cuts ? thank you.
You can. Make sure your boards don't move at all..
Min 2:32, can’t tell what you said about your second perimeter cut. It sounded like “split your pencil mark right up the middle”. Is that what you said?
How do you do this for a 6x6 post when my 7 1/4 blade depth isn’t long enough to go through half way through the post
Use a backsaw or pull saw for the remaining depth you need or the whole cut.
Would a multi tool work instead of the chisel ?

David B Hard to say. It might be a little too aggressive. But, you’d be surprised how effortless this chisel technique can be. As long as the flat surface is down, it’ll really just lift the grain out in clean, manageable slivers

Anyone able to wrap their head around how to do this with 3 beams? It has to be possible, something like a puzzle game, but I want all 3 directions to continue after the intersection….
Instead of going through the chisel work, just cut with your circular saw..
