A Croat here! Andy is kind of correct about the iÄ stuff. Basically iÄ would be male for something "smaller". Like if you imagine an object and a smaller version of it would have an -iÄ at the end. But basically most surnames end with -iÄ because their ancestors used to be recognized by one thing (a job, place where they lived etc.) but not all surnames are on -iÄ since throughout history we mixed a lot with Germans, Italians etc
