    Thanks for this video, Matt! I bought one of these lens adapters right away for my A7Sii with Nikon lenses, and sadly didn't really start using it much because I thought it produced a very soft image. I'm going to try it again with the thought of keeping it below 50-75% ND. Thanks for this!

AND WHICH ONE I should buy for (samyang cine lens T1.5 canon ef)with a7sii.? And that was black and silver type not blue ring. What is the difference between these two adapters?

    thanks for the review, very thorough - definitely NOT buying this adaptor with explanation below
    1 - why would any lens adaptor company have any internal part of a lens adaptor chrome? you mentioned that you get some internal flaring (that can look very artistic) but not good if you don't want that "look" - have you tried taking a black sharpie to the chrome area? of course you can't put anything on the adaptor that will effect the flange but I would try to flat black paint/sharpie all the chrome area
    2 - starts at 1 stop down - don't want to have to take it off when I'm in a low light situation
    3 - works as 2 rotating polarizers - what if you are operating hand held and have a lot of glass, car windows, reflections in your scene? - you will see the polarizing of these surfaces change as your camera's horizon changes (again only when HH)... I have shot with Rosco View (polarized gel) on windows of sets and using a true pola on the camera - by rotating the camera polarizer you can reduce the 5-10 stop over-exposed exterior that you see through the windows but can be a problem when HH as your horizon changes and with that your windows get slightly darker or brighter
    4 - what about IR contamination? when I shoot it's either with 4x5.6 or 6x6 ND IR's - and from what I have read a polarizer does not eliminate IR
    5 - the colour shift of the adaptor - the main reason to use the highest of quality ND's (with a matt box) when shooting - I do understand that if you're HH and shooting a wedding that a MB FF set-up can get tiresome but if you're going to spend good money on great glass (Sigma Art Series) then I would want to put the best ND in front of it
    6 - the loss of sharpness when you polarize down - definitely will lose a major amount of sharpness and contrast when 2 polarizing lens are used as an ND filter
    again thanks for the review
    Cheers
    Mitchell T. Ness CSC

      Like Maverick...as in Goose and Maverick. :-) And thanks for the video. I always learn something. I have a tip of my own...If you have not already, get the DJI Phantom 4 Pro instead of the Mavick. The camera is much better, and it handles MUCH better. I've flown the Inspire, Phantom 3 standard, Mavick and the P4 Pro...the Phantom 4 pro handle's sooooo much better than all of them. If you are a one man operation and want good imagery and ease of use, the Phantom 4 Pro is the way to go. The Mavick is a great little flying camera for the price and if you want a light load. But the Phantom 4 pro has a MUCH MUCH better camera.

  • @aerospacenews

    Nice job Matt.
    My fixed Tiffen NDs have a slight green cast and it makes me crazy - amber is much more likely to be easier to deal with in post for me because like you that's the direction I tend to go with grading, etc.
    As an aside, I'm a lifelong Nikon shooter with a bag o' legacy Nikkor glass. I've heard it said, but can't confirm save for my own experience, that lever which brings the joy of manual control with this adapter to the aperture is one of the reasons it is hard to eliminate flicker when shooting timelapse with Nikon DSLRs. There is more "bounce" between frames or just lack of precision so you end up with small variations in exposure frame to frame in the timelapse which = flicker.
    My glass is so old most was purchased to shoot Kodachrome and Velvia in my old F4Ss. I'd see that same variation even when they were brand new in high frame rate still sequences. Always frustrated me.
    We are talking 1/4-1/8 of a stop here. Not enough to destroy the image but will certainly show as flicker in timelapse and you can see it in slides on a lightbox.
    One more aside: Would you object to a repost, with credit, and embed of your video on getting your Part 107 self taught? Thought you did a great job there. Would be an awesome resource on our website.

    Wait Matt, I'm not some math genius here but 1/24 x 2 is not 1/48....but rather 1/12.
    Sorry, couldn't help myself there. ;)
    The 180degree shutter rule dictates that the shutter should be open for HALF of the frame rate. Not Double.
    Though it's tempting, one can't simply work with the denominators when dealing with fractions.

    First off, love your videos! (I'm in Bedford TX) I just jumped to two Sonys (a7sii) from Canon, I went all in with all new native lenses, your videos have been very useful. Question: Can I get an ND throttle lens adaptor for sony to sony? Just your typical FE to e-mount. Reason… I got that huge 28-135 and it's a crazy 95mm filter thread. Not a fan of cheap ND filters so the only filter I can find is almost 400! I thought 2 of these could be a cheaper alternative for both bodies.

    • @FotodioxInc
      @FotodioxInc Před 7 lety +1

      @whoismatt  Před 7 lety +1

      Andrew! I love Bedford! That's where I first had Rita's Snowcones, so good! Unfortunately though, there is no Sony to Sony mount ND throttle. This is due to the flange distance of the lens and camera. Wish I had better news for you.

    • @Siimkristjanpariis
      @Siimkristjanpariis Před 7 lety

      But on the other hand, while I film agressive drifting motorsport, it gets me pretty much the color grade i am going towards :P . Yet when I want more warm feeling with other types of filming such as weddings, I need to play with white balance on camera (not easy on sony screen) and in Lumetri as well.

    Hey Matt, sorry for Off-Topic, but I have seen the Sony 16-35 F4 in your videos a lot of times. I am currently thinking of purchasing this lens, I only have the Zeiss 55 1.8 for my Sony a7sii. Do you think it is a good contemplating fit or would I better be off with a sayang 35 1.4 or maybe the 28mm f2? I like to travel and do some street photography also, thats why I rather have a lens for multiple purposes.
    DO you use the 16-35 for shooting even though the f4?
    Thanks a lot for your time, your content is great

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  Před 7 lety

      Hey! This really depends on what you are looking for. I prefer to shoot with primes for a shallower depth of field and sharper image. I like the 16-35 for using it on a Glidecam etc. but I don't usually walk around with it on my camera.

    This is more of a technique question, but I've heard a few people mention the idea of shooting at 60fps and then cutting that down to 24fps in post, presumably adding 48th/s or 180• shutter Motion Blur in AE or something all to ring every bit of sharpness out of the lens for what you want to to be sharp in motion. I was wondering if it might make more sense to shoot at 24fps with 120/s shutter and then add the motion blur later would be as effective. Have you tried that at all?

    What are your thoughts about using the Canon version with say the Rokinon Cine series for Canon? Then you have to set aperture manually on the lens and only have to worry about ND with the adapter?

      I don't know :) maybe the viltrox and a tamron 24-70 f2.8? Will it be fast enough for weddings? Or a sigma 24mm on a viltrox or get a sony 24mm and call it a day !! Im thinking a 24mm on the a7 can be used 1: 24mm 2: clear zoom goes up to maybe 35mm and as a super 35 the 24mm is like a 35mm plus clear zoom as a50mm im i wrong? So with one lens 24mm f1.8 i can have lots off distances from my targets and keep the oem af off sony and don't buy adaptors!! Correct me if I think wrong

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  Před 6 lety +1

      +Double Edge Ministries hey! That can definitely happen if the adapter isn’t putting the lens the right distance from the sensor of the camera. I would test with another camera or adapter.

  • @NotAnEnglishman
    @NotAnEnglishman Před 7 lety

    Is there such a thing as an E-mount variable ND filter that isn't a lens adapter but merely a filter that you can screw directly onto your Sony camera and then screw the Sony lens onto that?
    I have a Sony camera and Sony lenses but they're all different sizes so it would be perfect to have an ND 'adapter' for those.
    Cheers!

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  Před 7 lety +1

      Haha I wish! Sony lenses are built so they don't require an adapter, so if you tried to stick something in between the camera and lens the image would be out of focus. :-/ You should buy a step-up ring with a large nd filter so you can make it fit all your lenses.

The build quality is strong and durable while the ND filter ring is smooth! I got this instead of the metabones because I knew I would be doing mostly outdoor daylight shooting. hope this helps!
