  • In this video I explain the differences between the Finnish joint application and separate application systems that you use to apply to study at Finnish universities or universities of applied sciences.
    So how do you apply to study at a Finnish university or a university of applied sciences? There are two different application methods that you can use when applying to study a Bachelor's or a Master’s level degree in Finland. These are called the Joint Application and the Separate Application systems.
    Joint and separate applications explained:

    Great video, i have few questions, when applying for join applications, am i only allowed to submit 1 CV and 1 motivation letters for all of the applications? what if i choose from 2 different fields?
    next silly questions: joint applications or separate applications, are admissions team can see all of my choices from different university and programs? I have heard that this might effect their decision (and not accept you) if you apply for different fields of study, they assume that you are not persistence on your choices, is that true?

    Hi Oliver,
    This was very informative.
    Just had a query, if its possible to apply for both joint as well as separate applications at the same application periods?..... for example, say I want to do my Masters in Robotics and I selected 6 univs in Finland via Joint Application and suppose for Aalto I want to apply for another course (say Mechanical Engineering) as Aalto allows a max of 2 courses. So, it is possible to apply for the Mechanical Engineering course as well as a separate application?

      Hey Aishwarya and thanks for the great question and the positive feedback! Also im so sorry for the late response. Ive been bombarded with questions these two months and it takes me quite a while to get back to everyone.
      So to brief (hopefully this doesnt come too late), you have to check when and how you are supposed to apply to each of those programmes. This is because the separate and joint application happen at different times (separate in december and joint in january) and most master's degree programmes are applied to using the separate applications. So please check which of these application systems you are supposed to use for each school. You can find this information from the university websites.

      Hey Ekta and thanks for the question! Unfortunately i cant give you any more specifics simply because most of the universities in Finland do not publish the minimum scores that are required for admission. One of the reasons is that admission in Finland done on a competitive basis meaning that only the best candidates are admitted. This on the other hand means that the minimum requirements might vary from year-to-year if the quality of the applicants changes.
      So yeah, cant give you any more specifics. Some universities do offer some statistics on their websites about these issues but they are pretty rare.

    Is it possible to take the Spring and Autumn semester in the same year, so basically finishing two semesters in a year?

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 3 lety +1

      So im not completely sure if i got this right. Since the academic year in Finland consists of two semesters (starting with the autumn and ending with the spring semester), technically speaking you are required to do two semester in one year. However, i think i might have misunderstood the question.

    • @aaronjaff7749
      @aaronjaff7749 Před 3 lety +1

      @@RoadtoFinnish ok what I'm saying is that when you take a semester in autumn and finish in spring can you not take a break and start another semester in spring to autumn?

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 3 lety +1

      @@aaronjaff7749 So the academic year in Finland is divided into two semesters, autumn and spring. The academic year always starts in autumn (august or september depending on the school). In between we have the summer holidays during which there is limited teaching but its very, very limited.
      A normal pace for studies at the university level is 60 ECTS credits per academic year. This means 30 credits per semester. Since we have full academic freedom, no-one will care when and how you complete these credits as long as you get them done at some point. So you could do courses during the autumn, the spring or both. It does not matter that much.
      However, what is relevant is that the curriculum for degrees in Finland are planned with these semesters in mind. So if you start your first year studies in september, you will have a bunch of mandatory courses that happen both during autumn and spring. Many courses, especially those mandatory first and second year courses only run once per academic year. So if you want skip the spring semester, you have to wait for a full year to take those mandatory courses.
      So yeah, you could, in theory take a break through the summer and autumn (June to December) and continue with school in January. However, this will cause you to miss out on a bunch of courses and it will delay your graduation.
      So the standard recommendation is to simply follow the structure of the academic year and do courses both during the autumn and spring semester. You can take a break during the summer unless you want to apply work summer jobs or internships.
      Again, im not 100% sure if i answered your question 😅. I think this might simply be because of the difference in our way of thinking so let me know if im not making any sense.

    • @aaronjaff7749
      @aaronjaff7749 Před 3 lety +1

      @@RoadtoFinnish it actually did answer my question i wanted to know if you could study in the summer so you could finish your degree quicker which from what you said the answer is yes but it's limited so it's probably better if you studied like the other students.

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 3 lety +1

      @@aaronjaff7749 Ach now i got it. Let me clarify a bit. So you can definitely study through-out the summer but the biggest issue with this is the limited amount of courses that are available. So on its face having a smaller amount of courses available is not an issue but what makes this a problem is the fact that the course selection for each summer is published late in the spring. This compared to the fact that universities (at least Aalto) publish their entire curriculum for the year already before the autumn semester starts. So this causes issues in planning. Since you dont know which courses are available during the summer, you cant take the summer into account when you plan your year. This can cause a situation where the courses available during the summer are exactly the same that you already took during autumn or spring. This would mean that you loose the summer because you didnt apply for jobs. So its a mixed bag. Id say that summer school is mostly useful during the first and second year because the majority of summer courses are basic courses. However, once you go to do your masters, the majority of those summer courses are no longer relevant.

    Is it compulsory to have English proficiency to apply for undergraduate scholarship ?

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey and thanks for the question. Yes, you have to prove a satisfactory level of proficiency in English in order to study in Finland. The way that you do this depends on the school but this is usually done using a English proficiency test like the TOELF, IELTS or something similar. However, when you apply to certain schools, they require you to also do the SAT's. Some of these schools do not require an additional language proficiency test because getting high enough marks from the SAT's is enough for them.
      I can help you find more precise information about this if you already know what field you would like to study and in which school.

    Mr. Oliver, I want to ask you, if I apply to study in Finnish, and I do not speak Finnish and want to study in this language, will I be accepted into the university, if I am accepted, does the university teach me the Finnish language, and when will I enroll in the university?

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 3 lety +2

      Hey and thanks for the question. No, you cannot apply to study in Finland in Finnish unless you speak Finnish. However, if you want to study in Finland and learn Finnish at the same time, i would simply recommend that you apply to study in an English taught programme and then include Finnish language courses to your curriculum.

      I thank you very much my brother for giving us the door to life again to teach .. Can you explain to me how I can apply for this course (apply to study in English taught program and then include Finnish language courses in your curriculum), The programs taught in English require the IELTS exam .. I am not very good in English, I do not have very English.

      Hey Bikram and thanks for the question. I would recommend that you reach out to Diaconia directly via email: www.diak.fi/en/diak/contact-us/
      They are able to give you a better answer than i. Im not that well informed of the field of social work so i cant really help you with this question.

    Hello from Azerbaijan. Thanks for you dear Oliver, because you helpt to students without fee. I would to apply Master in Finland. Can you write me deadline of Master degree? Thanks for all of thinks

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Javid and thanks for the positive feedback, i do appreciate it. Unfortunately i cant give you a deadline for Master's applications unless i know what field you are looking to study and in which university. The application periods depend on each school and the dates vary a bit between each university in Finland. However, what i can say is that most universities in Finland have their applications for English taught Master's degrees open *right now*. Most of them will close in the first week of January. The next application period for most (not all but most) Master's degrees is in September 2021.
      So yeah, i cant give you a deadline unless i know the exact field, university and programme that you want to apply to.

      Hey Shajid and thanks so much for being part of the community! Im very happy to hear that these videos are helping you out. You can always reach out the me using the emails that you can find in the description box but please note that i reply to my emails very, very slowly because of the amount of emails that i get. Also, im not usually able to help people individually when it comes to the university application process or e.g. the residence permit processes. I simply dont have the time to help everyone. However, if you have more general questions about the application, admission or anything else around studying in Finland, i recommend that you join our Discord server. The idea of the server is to create a community of people interested in studying, living and working in Finland and on the server i post updates about upcoming videos and live streams and we have over 600 internationals who help each other out with all of these issues. Hi Oliver,
    Do you any video like a Student Pathway or Roadmap to get the Permanent Residency in Finland?

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 3 lety +2

      Hey! I do not currently have a video on these topics. The reason is that there is limited amount of information available on this topic even for Finnish language websites. I need to dig up quite a lot of information to get all the details correct but ill definitely try to do a video like this during 2021.
      The one thing i can say is that doing a degree in a Finnish university or university of applied sciences is an excellent path for a permanent residency in Finland. Again, the details are a bit complicated so i hope i can get back to this later this year.
