  • Sony Xperia 1: Camera Field Test
    How well does the three-camera Sony Xperia 1 hold up to outdoor photography? In a nutshell, very well. In this video, I review Sony's super-wide, normal and telephoto lenses for outdoor and travel photography. I also compare the image quality from the Xperia 1 to the iPhone and the Nikon Z6.

    many people still complain about the xperia 1 dynamic range. From my testing, there is nothing wrong with it, it's just not as wide (and post processed) as the samsungs, huaweis or iphones out there... but it can be an advantage as much as a disadvantage. Depends on what you are looking for. Usually a wide dynamic range obtained by a smartphone processing means also the loss of color accuracy, usually going overboard with warm tones (see the iphone xs, great dynamic range, strong orange cast in many cases). Do you agree with my findings?

      But Xperia 1's manual HDR isn't it on per with Samsung or Huawei or iPhone?

    • @user-su8xv8lr4s
      @user-su8xv8lr4s Před 4 lety +4

      I agree with that man, Sony would have done it like Samsung and Iphone, it's not that hard for them to do so, but they organized the HDR to be on good level pictures quality and video footage 👍🏻

      Have you noticed the minute 14:14 when he said that the colors on the iPhone are more natural .. But once you check the images displayed you will see that the image of xperia 1 is closer to the colors of the Canon camera! Focus in the color of water for example ... What do you say ??

    • @MikeHagen
      @MikeHagen  Před 4 lety +6

      Yes ... I mostly agree. Dynamic range was better on the Sony, but color saturation was lower. I can increase saturation and also pick my color grading approach in post processing. I'd be more apt to do post processing on the Sony, where with the iPhone I'd be more willing to publish directly from the camera.

    Excellent overview. One thing worth noting; the Xperia 1 mk 1 in 2022 still have six very good things going for it;
    - It has a 10 bit 4k screen.
    - It is currently the cheapest second hand mobile phone on the list of recommended phones by Filmic for their Filmic Pro application when using log v3. Not only do you get log footage, but you also get to see it in 10 bit on-site. This is massive for mobile phone videography. A couple of second hand Xperia 1 mk 1s make for the basis of a decent low cost video production suite. Only thing to note is getting an ND filter that covers all three lenses is non trivial as the lenses are in the middle and not on an edge!
    - It still has a fast CPU, as well as some very good performance optimisations for gaming (that other phones don't have). If you want a cheap fast phone for gaming, this is a good bet. The wide cinema format is especially useful because the soft controls end up outside the viewable screen area.
    - It allows an external SD card, up to 512GB. You can switch SD cards without the usual 'pin tool' but the phone does reboot on SD card change. Still useful for backing up video/images on-site
    - Although the Xperia 1 mk 2 is slightly better, it costs around twice as much second hand, so the cost benefit of moving up from the Mk 1 is low.
    - Sony EyeAF. Never mentioned in the video because the photo subject material never required it. The Xperia 1 Mk 1 is the cheapest second hand Sony camera that does it in continuous mode. I originally assumed cell phone cameras don't really need it, but it does make a difference.
    Oh, one clarification. The reason why only the main camera produces RAW is because the camera does not send Camera2 API RAW data from the tele nor wide lenses. As this is the case three years after release, it will never happen now, as to fix it Sony would have to issue a firmware change, and this is now unlikely.

    I own a Xperia 1 & let me tell you it is an absolute garbage.
    Screen display brightness is low, camera picture quality is really bad to what is out there in the premium range. Video stabilization is none existence, the drop in frame rate as you move the phone slowly to record is very noticeable. Battery won't last the whole day on medium use. I spent £900 believing the gimmicks of 4k screen display, creator mode, cinema pro etc etc, but in reality none of these things you require on day to day use & to be honest those gimmicks are not that good any way, full of flaws. Never ever will I buy a Sony mobile.
