It’s always been a sensitive subject to ask a real truck connoisseur, which is the ‘better truck’, Kenworth or Peterbilt? In today’s video, we’ll take a closer look at both truck brands, then compare, rate, score and poll our viewers and come up with a winner!
We compare the Peterbilt and Kenworth Truck under the following categories:

- Both KW and Peterbilt have luxury features, but there are some general complaints about both brands when it comes to particular features.

- This is a tricky one and much depends on the actual dealership.

- Depending on the country and if in the US, the state, but there is a cost difference between these 2 brands. The question is, would you choose strictly on price?

Both companies are owned by parent company Paccar? I drove both the Kenworth 680 and the Peterbilt 579 for over a year. Right now I am driving a Peterbilt. I hope Peterbilt remodels their interior to keep up with Freightliner. Volvo is the worst. Their shops are CLOSED on the weekends, no thanks!

1969-1972 era kenworth w900a. just no way to beat an w900 a model.
I'd go for a new pete cabover and haul light stuff.

Over 45 years I’ve had 4 Petes and a W9.
1 362 double bunk,
3 379s with my last one new,
1 W9 I had for 11 years.
They’re both Paccar products. The difference is a Cadillac compared to a Buick. I liked them both, but if I would have known about KWs before I would have had one sooner.
Thats a statement there! I made similar observations while working harvest and just bought my first a 81 w900a to build into a small dump for my septic work.
When comparing two, definitely have to bring up Kenworth’s expensive 8 bag ride vs Pete’s simple and chipper 4 bag ride...
Personally I think they're both gorgeous trucks. If I were to get either one (389 or a W900L) I might lean more towards the KW simply for the bigger sleeper. I'm a big guy so any extra space helps.

I totally agree with Dave. Peterbuilt dealerships are horrible and their service department is even worse.
I bought my 96 W900L new. I like the drop floor in the Studio Sleeper and the partition between cab and sleeper. But I'm only 5'8".

The wife and I are looking to purchase a new truck in the near future and to be honest I am going with K.W. outta Knoxville Tn. Even though I LOVE PETERBILT the salesman and financial officer stood outside with us and acted like they cared where as Rush acted like we were being a burden.
Own a w900L heavy spec. Love everything about it. Would prefer the Pete's dashboard/cab area but the sleeper is awesome in this truck.
I really like 389's but the KW big bunk rules if you have to live in one.
The clutch in the Pete is my main hang up with them. But I also have always loved KWs since I was a little kid so I'm probably a little biased but they are both quality truck's.
Couple of points, and just my own opinion I might add. If you can run a lowered truck, the Pete just plain looks better. If you need the ground clearance, I think the KW looks better. It’s purely subjective of course, but that’s my take. Also, with a similar spec, the Pete usually ends up lighter, which gives more payload, if you run heavy. They’re both great trucks.
KWs do have a much bigger presence and excellent reputation overseas where Pete's are rather rare.
Asking which is better is like asking which kid you like better

Some good advice regardless of brand...call all the dealerships with the same question..tell em your turbos busted...when can they get the part and how fast to get it in....resale value on a truck doesn't matter if you've bought a truck and it gets laid up for 2 weeks all the time waiting for parts. They all look the same in a junkyard
W900L with a studio sleeper. Best in the business bar none; plus the ride is so much better!!
But, Dave, what about a Binder Emoryville? My fave feature was the snow drift that collected in the passenger footwell and didn't melt until April. A close second was the driver's side wiper that would sometimes flip up and start wiping the top of the cab. No contest, man. Emoryville for the win!
Both are great. I'm with lettuce king on being comfortable. Love the way you sit in a Pete and the pedals. The throttle pedal drives me nuts in a KW when I first get in it.
I love the w900 but two things i really wish they'd change on them is the deep angle slope of the hood and the fact that you can't put fat stacks on them without the pipes protruding way out there. 379's and 389's have enough space to put fat stacks on and they don't protrude out much. Peterbilt hoods don't slope so they give that long stretched out low rider look.
The $2K price difference is because they include a baby moose with each new purchase
An outfit i was with located in Fargo ND issued me a brand new 2014 KW660 and I fell right in love with that truck. Unfortunatly they traded their fleet over every 4 years.. She had 491,600 on the odometer when i turned it in for another. Every mile was from me save for the 38 miles that was on the odo when i got it. I didnt like the Bubble Pete 579 they wanted to put me in so I went home.
The ones they had WERE NOT speced for the heavy hauling that we did... Honestly it was the weather of the upper midwest that nade me decide to head back South.. Point is, i really loved the KW 660. Only mechanical problem she had was the obligatory weeklong aftertreatment shut down and repair. No APU so we had to idle the trucks in the summer. Anyone whos driven a modern truck knows that excessive idling guaranteed an aftertreatnent filter system cook out and a week waiting for the parts from SLC Utah.
As a kid I always loved the Kenworth aerodyne, I am now 51 and I still love the Kenworth. But they are both very cool trucks.
While both are nice, I'll always be a Kenworth man. 😎
3/5 for asking you to come back in 2 weeks and wont order parts. 3/5 for burning down on the road to poor electrical. Seems kinda generous to me.
a don't buy/5 seems more reasonable if the vehicle catches fire because of an manufacturer defect for the entire brand, if the vehicle can catch fire because of an manufacturer defect what else is defective or a safety risk.
I like the look of the Peterbilt a little better but Kenworth is a great truck too. I love that the seat goes all the way back in the pete.
A classic Pete is my dream truck.
Electrical problems are the “kiss of death” once a vehicle develops one! Every car or truck I’ve had that suddenly had an electrical problem just can’t be fixed and/or repaired!
I LOVE all the chrome, the size, the shape, and I particularly like the ride in the PACCAR trucks.
Kenworth made it big in Australia and NZ, Peterbilt didn't. I think that kinda speaks to KW having better management and better service.
Anything but a Volvo as far as I am concerned!!
Both my adoptive trucker dad, and my biological dad pick Kenworth over every other semi truck.
My biological dad worked in a scrap yard as their heavy duty mechanic. While my adoptive father, works as a trucker. He’s worked from bed trucks to sleepers. He hates Volvo, he hates every other truck except Kenworth.
I gotta go with Kenworth
And if someone said You have to go cross country with this load, you can take the W9 or the 389. You would say 389, so that makes it the better rig
As an owner of Several Classic Peterbilt anb Kenworth trucks from Model years 1975 to 1986. I will say they both have their Merits.
I got a kenworth 2007 t2000 cat Acert engine nxs model . I like it . The grill way better then a freight liner

Full disclosure here: I am even less than a novice in that I am currently studying for my CDL. Many of the trucking companies that are advertising for drivers use Freightliners instead of Peterbilt and Kenworth. Does your comparison exclude Freightliners because it is not up to the same quality level as Peterbilt and Kenworth?
Only talking about the large cars but if I want to look real good and ride real smooth in a straight line, W900 for sure. For a comfy cabin with everything just where I like it, and being able to actually turn...379 Pete.
The Peterbuilt is the Harley Davidson of the trucking industry. People are loyal to them. Sometimes Blindly Loyal.
I prefer the flat floor in the Pete and the clutch pedal comes up from the floor, rather than the slopes floor in the KW and the clutch pedal coming down from the dash.
Kenworth and Peterbuilt are about the same these days as a Chrysler and a Plymouth were back in the day.
News flash: they’re not separate companies anymore. They’re both made by PACCAR.

I own a 98 t600 with a 12.7 dirty Detroit, had it 14 yrs on my 3rd engine, 2nd tranny, its cheap af im killing it!
Peterbilts are most popular for the name... kinda like when people go "oh my god its a lamborghini" its kind of the reputation is how I see it. But I prefer Kenworths because I like working trucks more than show trucks
Thanks as always for the great information!! I like both truck brands and have had good experiences with both. There is definitely a perception out there that Pete is just better than KW but I have not really seen the difference except at resale.
Having driven everything but Oshkosh and Westernstar, the Petes and KWs never impressed me. They are the ones everyone talks about but the build quality of the ones I have driven aren't better than anyone else. If you really want leg room, you go with Freightliner or International. The M2 Business class Freightliner, Workstar and Prostar International and the Ford Superduty are the only trucks I have driven that I didn't need the seat to go back another four inches or more to be comfortable in. Hell the business class is the first truck I had to pull the seat slightly forward to get the clutch all the way to the floor.
I'd take a cornbinder or puppydog over them any day.

In my 20 years of trucking, my favorite truck to drive had to be the Kenworth T-600.
Never got a chance to drive a Peterbilt, but have seen plenty, and never really was fond of the cab design.
I can verify that some pete dealership are absolutely horrible=tlg the larson group. My first truck i bought was a 95 379 and needed "some work" on the surface not bad. Long story short the engine break wasn't working took it to said dealership they said in order to fix the engine break they would have to pull the transmission out. Hmmm told them to do whatever to fix it. Only thing wrong was 2 wires not hooked up!! I didn't pay for them pulling out the transmission!!
Do the math. If you buy a Peterbilt 389 for $165,000, drive it for 3 years, all under warranty, drive for 400,000 miles then sell it for $135,000, or at worst $120,000. That is $10,000 to $15,000 per year for a new truck. You may get a little bit less fuel mileage efficiency, maybe cost you $1,000-$1,500 per year than what you would get from a T680 or a Pete 579, but their resale for a new $155,000 truck will be $80,000 at that same period.
I'd say an aero truck over 400,000 miles would use $50k-$60k less in fuel than a big hood
My Father drove Peterbilt and Kenworth trucks and had great success the 359 is my favorite along with the 379 as far as the kw goes I like the W900 and the T800 My father Likes Cat or Detroit Diesel due to more experience with them I remember most of them had C15 Cats Just basic maintenance and a few issues Blown Head gasket Head was not torqued tight enough is why it blew head gaskets and another had an issue with one of the Pistons causing it to create black smoke The C15 is probably the best engine By far for any truck
Hello Dave, my apologies on jumping into one of your great vids to ask you for off subject information. I was told to seek you out on one of your vids as the person told me you may be able to help, and you probably know all the old sckool cool guys up north. I’m looking for any info or history on a Canadian truck or driver that may have run with the moniker “Mr. Sticky”. I have fond memories of seeing the truck, a Ford LTL 9000 running through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan near my home town. I’m pretty sure it pulled out of Canada as it was usually pulling a set of trains. This truck really fueled my love of trucks and the LTL 9000

The last peterbilt I drove the radiator went out before the truck had 9,000 miles on it. Other than that I really enjoyed driving it.

I feel bad for laughing at the Lettuce King’s misfortunes. I hate his Pete burned to the axels but it is kinda funny
Kenworth W900 with studio sleeper just looks so comfortable compare to anything short of custom sleeper. However in my opinion best trucks are volvos from the practical perspective. They are just so easy to maneuver in tight spots. I feel sorry for these guys with 280 inch wheelbase in their 389s pulling up and down 10-15 times in order to negotiate a tight spot at the shippers, whereas I need just 3-4 pull ups in volvo or cascadia.
I drove an older W900 KW with that walking beam suspension supposedly made for a softer ride than springs .before air bags you talk about a butt twister when hauling off road and crossing uneven ground as when high sided one of those beams can flip itself over reversing it's intended purpose ,over setting the entire rig and dropping one side onto the tires ,never happened to me but did adhere to the warnings and paid attention to the ground

2:35 high windows, not a good thing in Arizona during the summer. Even with the covers on, they let in a lot of heat.
I liked the t660, only thing was, I hit my head on the dome light, many times. Going between the seats.
There’s only one truck they call the king of the road, Kenworth W900.
T800 all day, set back axle and slope nose make it great for in town use. Not saying Peterbilt doesn’t offer the same
Iv ran both 379s and w900s. I'm 6'0 I find the w9 alittle more spacious in the cab I'm running a 07 379 at the moment and just feels cramped. Seats company usually replaces with legacy seats not long after getting them of course we run all pre 07 trucks to stay out of emissions so seats are pretty wore out by then. I do agree Pete's do hold value better but not sure why considering both kw and pete both have a large fan base. Both are good trucks although Pete's do have electrical gremlins. the one i'm running now with high beams on after about 3 min the pass side lights kick out both hi and low nobody can figure out why but both trucks from a long term stand point will last years just with the emissions makes it harder and questionable weather it's worth holding on to them long term sucks for drivers but dealers love that guys don't hold on to them more than 5-7 years before trading in
The new gauge package paccar is offering will take getting used to. I'm pretty sure it won't stop anyone from buying them. I'm interested to see if they change the whole dash look or just the main panel.
I remember a story that my neighbor told me, he drives a 04 pete 379 and he hauls propane, he was driving on the 70 toward Richmond Indiana and he was on the highway, he looked to his right mirror and he noticed his brake lines caught on fire so he had to grab his fire distinguisher and put it out

Cant go wrong with a W9 or 379 , 990 or 389 ?? eehh .. Pete can never be accused of having a great clutch pedal .. Got my 90L in 1995 , retiring in a few years , someone will get a great tractor ..
I have 2 kw i do like them both but I may try go with peterbilt next

WISH MARMON WAS STILL MADE. DROVE ONE FOR ABOUT 2 YEARS. IT WAS NOT MUCH DIFFERENT THAN THE 359 PETE OR W900 KW CAB. A DRUNK DRIVER CAME OVER THE CENTER LINE AND WE HIT HEAD ON. THAT ENDED UP BEING THE END OF THAT TRUCK. THE MOTOR WAS ALMOST SHOT AT THE TIME SO I GUESS MY DAD DID GOOD OFF THE INSURANCE CHECK.

Yes the 379 will catch fire without you being anywhere in the vicinity of it it just depends on the model and who was QC'n that day .In my opinion driving plenty of each over the years , a bit more cab room in the KW by inches , the older Corvette dash 900's had no place to put your junk on the dash without it ending up on the floor , KW nose has it own appeal I guess , later models looking a bit more streamlined but not by much ... Petes 379,359, still hold onto their old school style . omitting all the newer plastics .377's I just dont like plastic on my truck period thats why my preference (prejudiced ) are the Marmons ,hand built even with a plastic hood ,if i were to get into wreck I hope Im driving a Marmon .Petes and KW 's both share the same frames and Paccar payment book. Of the two Petes seem to carry more prestige ,if you want to be close to your rider thats the one to drive no secrets kept for sure My main gripe if given a choice between the two would be a Pete , not so sure about the newer KWs but the older W900 and into the 80's ,90,s maybe the 2000's ,that damn upright post for the vent windows is placed right in my line of sight for my mirrors unless you extend the mirrors , making for my quick glance into my mirrors requiring me to tilt my head forwards for an unobstructed view .Thru history and then some there will always be those who do and dont on these two , , Potatoes and Tomatoes taters and maters

GP transco looks great, but equipment matters. I see they don't run base model Cascadias, but I'm not a big Cascadia fan personally. I know they're good trucks but those afterthought bunk windows don't look much good for blind side backing. Still waiting for sleepy Joe to legalize import cabovers.
Peterbilt and kenworth have ben getting closer in design over the years and now they almost have the same exterior design

I'm not a trucker but I still would take a Pete every day all day, But I'll admit at the end of the day the differences come down to personal preference. The important bits ie. engine, driveline, etc. are virtually the same, so yeah it comes down to looks and preferred creature comforts. Still Pete though!
