      Respected sir, The way you sorted out the issue that has baffled so many grammarians and teachers so far, once again speaks volumes for the fact that you are the most celebrated grammarian not only in West Bengal but also in India.Revered sir, another issue that has flummoxed me a lot is-Active-He saw a picture on the wall.Passive-(A)A picture was seen by him on the wall (B)A picture on the wall was seen by him.Sir, you are earnestly entreated with folded hands to enlighten me a bit as to whether the phrase 'on the wall ' should be considered as the 'Adverbial phrase ' or 'a picture on the wall ' as the 'Noun phrase '. Sir,do please crystallize my vague ideas into definite ones.

    Most Revered sir, being undisputedly the greatest of all grammarians in West Bengal, you are earnestly entreated with folded hands to shed some light on the following concept, thus intellectual nourishing me with your pearls of deeper -than-sea wisdom -Question No.-1-Active-He saw a picture on the wall.Passive-Ans.-(A) A picture on the wall was seen by him (B) A picture was seen by him on the wall.Question No.2-Active-He saw a bird in the tree.Ans.-(A)A bird in the tree was seen by him (B) A bird was seen by him in the tree.Question No.3-Active-He saw a tattoo on her right arm.Ans.-(A) A tattoo on her right arm was seen by him (B)A tattoo was seen by him on her right arm.Sir,do please explain the nuances with regard to the placement of phrases in the Passive voice.

    • @HelpSelfEnglish
      @HelpSelfEnglish  Před měsícem +1

      The subject /Object must be a Noun or Noun equivalent (pronoun, gerund, noun phrase etc.)
      In the above examples, 'a picture on the wall', 'a bird in the tree', & 'a tattoo on her right arm' should not be called phrases. Rather, 'on the wall', 'in the tree' & 'on her right arm' are proper phrases. Again, the object and the adverb phrase may/may not be placed together. So, all these answers are correct. Options 'A' are always better. I prefer adverbs to be placed just after the main verb.
      Anyway, the issue you've raised is really interesting. Thank you 🙏🏻

    Respected sir, being a grammar stalwart, you are earnestly entreated to change the following active voice into a Passive one -Question -Grass grows over the ground (Voice change of class ten from Highlights by PK Mukherjee).My probable answers are -(A)Grass is grown over the ground (B) The ground is grown over with grass. Sir,do please let me know your valued take on this.

    • @HelpSelfEnglish
      @HelpSelfEnglish  Před 5 měsíci +1

      1. Grass grows over the ground. (No object)
      2. Farmers grow paddy in the field. (Obj. - paddy)
      Sentence 1 should not be changed into passive but ,in old school grammar, it can be done. In that case, both of your answers are correct. In answer B grow means cover.
      According to modern grammar, a verb without object need not be changed into passive.
      I prefer going with modern grammar.

    Respected sir, this is my last entreaty to your greatness to solve the following voice -related issue -Active-When he has said a lot, let her say a little (Make it a Passive voice). Sir,my probable answers are -(A) When a lot has been said by him,let a little be said by her (B) When a lot has been said by him,it is suggested that she should say a little (C) When a lot has been said by him, she might be allowed to say a little. Most Revered sir,as a grammarian you do have the ability to knock spots off all the other grammarians, so you are earnestly entreated with folded hands to crystallize my vague ideas into definite ones;i keep on awaiting your valued take on this.

    • @HelpSelfEnglish
      @HelpSelfEnglish  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Your questions always delight me.
      The first one is the best (A)
      According to modern approach, in order to make passive the verb should be made passive (be + v3). For this reason, if there is no object, we need not make it passive. For example,
      Act: Please come in.
      Pas: You are requested to come in.
      this is not a wise answer since the verb has been put into infinitive, not in the passive.
      You know, I always prefer modern methods. Although, for the sake of exams, sometimes I am to comply with the old norms.

    • @HelpSelfEnglish
      @HelpSelfEnglish  Před 18 dny

      ‘A’ is the best answer
      Because, according to modern concept, the verb should be turned into passive.
      In other options. the sentence has been made passive but the given verb is not in passive.
      This is not wrong but an old idea. It may be done if there’s no object in the sentence.
      Modern linguists say that a sentence without object does not need to make passive since they are rarely used in spoken language.
