On today's autism family vlog: it's obviously not the circumstances we would have wanted, but Andy has now spent the night in a hotel for the first time, so we find out how he copes with that, what he eats and what we get up to in Nottingham while we're waiting for news on Anna's mum.

- She's starting to show some signs of improvement - she seems a lot better now than she did when I last saw her on Monday, but she's still very sick

It's honestly heartbreaking to see Andy having what he probably considers to be the best time of his life (being of school and getting to do all these fun things he enjoy) while one of the most important people in his life is suffering something he can't even understand. All my thoughts and prayers are with you all, and Dave :)

You guys are truely great, under the stress you are under and still putting Andy first, following through on promises that under normal circumstances would be fine to brake, but as you guys know Andy wouldnt understand, trust in yourselves in how you would explain it all to Andy as you've got it right so far. I think on some level Andy gets that something big is going on.I think that's why he's been so compliant.he's so intuned with mom that on some level he feels that this is what's going to happen and is feeling moms stress. My son trends to be compliant with things he normally wouldn't tolerate during family tragedy. Even though he doesn't get what's happening I think he feels deep down there's something big and that there is no other option. It's a blessing that's for sure.
man, watching Andy do his normal Nottingham routine while the situation unfolded was difficult. Hes doing brilliantly though, as you and anna are kev, this really shows how powerful your bond as a family is, i can only send all my hope and love your way and pray the best happens. This is heartbreaking for me to watch, I went through a similar time when my mum past away, it was devastating for me, I really hope Anna's mum pulls through, my thoughts are with you all
Also on a side note I just wanted to give you a massive man hug, its hard seeing you so emotional, thank you for sharing, I know these must be the hardest videos ever to put out
I don't know if this an appropriate comment but I think it could help so I'm going to say it anyway. If the worst happens and you need to explain death to Andy there is resources and books that you can use to explain death to people with learning disability. I had to look into this through my job of supporting adults with autism. The books explain things in a very simple and matter of fact way. Best wishes to you all x

If you speak to Andy's social worker and/ or cams they should be able to provide the booklets ....but obviously that would be something to look at a bit further down the line once things have settled down a bit

I’m so happy you spoke about autism and sympathy/illness/death. When our mum passed away 3 years ago, my little brother was 10. She was in hospital for 9 days and my brother had no idea what was going on. He carried on going to school to keep his routine, I had to stay home most nights with him to keep everything the same. When she passed he didn’t understand and still doesn’t 3 years on. It’s heartbreaking to watch, but at the same time I always say I’d rather him not be affected than him be affected badly. Thinking of you, Anna and Anna’s mum xx

This reminds me so much of when I lost my Grams...so tough to watch Andy having such a good time while one of his favorite people is poor. Andy, you're such a trooper powering through these changes to your routine, well done. I'm glad you got to see the trams and are enjoying your "Nottingham holiday". Kev, thanks for taking the time out of this trying day to give us an update. I know this is tough, but seeing you try to be strong was very inspiring. Anna, your mum's in my thoughts and prayers, as are you and your brothers, and I'm hoping she continues to improve, even if it's little by little. Sending all the hugs and love I have to you all.
Just wanted to say my thoughts are with Anna and all your family, what your doing with the vlog has been such an eye opener and by showing the enjoyment of your lives as well as the lows is what makes your channel so unique and true. I know you all will but stay positive....

That was absolutely heart wrenching ! Thank you for sharing it with us.it is always hidden away but for parents like us it's part of our reality and its hard and it adds another layer of difficulty to these already trying times.I'm so glad Anna has you to help through this so she can have this time with her mom.

An Airbnb would be cheaper and you may find one close to the hospital
We had a quick look on Monday but in the end decided to just get a cheap hotel from a brand we recognised just to be safe. If we have to stay more than a couple of days we'll look to move to an AirBnB.

This video actually made me emotional, I do sort of understand your "pain", Kevin. Had to deal with this some 5 years ago now. To be honest, all I want to know, is what you allow us to know. My only hope is that Anna's mom has a soon and good recovery from now on! With love and regards from the hotty Netherlands, but I presume it is not much cooler over there....

I hope Anna's mom gets better and Anna is able to process everything ok without getting to stressed, which I know is hard. It's weird to me that visiting hours are so short in England. In America, at least in all my experience with hospitals which I quite a bit, you can visit whenever and even stay at night.
Glad she’s slowly improving, glad Andy slept well and liked the trams. I wonder if Andy needed to know what was going on if a short clip on CZcams would help him understand, it’s difficult when an older child has an emotional developmental age of a much younger child.
It must be so hard for him to be taken out of school and from this routine but hopefully everything will turn out well and she will pull through.
