In This Week in MXA Episode 153, presented by O’Neal, we ride Matthias Walkner’s factory Red Bull KTM 450 Rally bike while in Austria. We showed up for a day of practice with the KTM crew, while Matthias rode his Rally bike to the track, and then proceeded to lay down faster lap times than Josh and all the Pro KTM test riders. In this episode, Josh rides the most exotic KTM 450 ever and he talks to Matthias about what it's like to ride this bike on a motocross track.

Pretty sweet video. When you first look at these bikes, you expect them to be really heavy and hard to fly. But these guys fling these things around! Basically a factory dirtbike with massive tanks, a windsheild, some other doohickeys and toolspace. But they also come with watertanks. Just in case it breaks down in the middle of the desert
Great video. I enjoyed hearing 2018 Dakar winner Matthias’ perspective on riding his Dakar bike. I also noticed the Erzberg Hard Enduro number plates on that bike. Not only motocross on tracks but he rode that in the Iron Giant this past year. …impressive!

I miss the days when the Dakar bikes were huge 750+ twins making ridiculous power. These 450s are running flat out all the time, it's fun, but man those old big bikes were so cool

almost anyone (who has previous rally experience as a professional) can purchase a KTM 450RR and they are almost exactly as you see here minus the 52mm Cone Valve fork.
these are low volume production machines. they're not "works" bikes if that's how you want to put it. I've purchased two of them (a first gen and a current gen) and have raced them in BiTD V2R and The Mint 400. You can even buy the 52mm forks for them even though they don't sell them in the catalog anymore. Again, I know this to be fact because I've purchased 3 sets of 52mm forks in the last few years. hell, you can pretty much get every single piece of kit the factory team is running, including the oil cooler. KTM's US race department is happy to help legitimate professional racers with a lot. Although, If you've never gone racing at this level, the prices for some of this stuff will have your head spinning around. The 52mm forks are over 8K alone. The oil cooler kit was $5200. An engine spare is $9500. The carbon upright for the nav tower is $6500. the bike itself was $37,500 usd.
now, the Honda and Yamaha rally bikes- those are full on works prototypes that you cannot obtain.

Rally bikes are so fun to mess around on I couldn't imagine a factory bike! And the track views look incredible definitely would be distracting on the track compared to riding here Michigan 🤣

This is one of the things i dreamed of doing before. I wanted to learn to, and race a rally bikes. Martien Jimmink is our family and has done the Dakar many times now, i would have loved to go train with him when i was younger and looking at doing this, though never would want to make it a career more just the experience and become a more versatile rider. If i can ever ride again i wouod love to try one of these bikes.

Matthias seems like such a chilled dude. Lives his best life and puts in massive amounts of time into being as good a rider as he is.

Ethic foam grips are better if you want higher quality ones
They all run those soft grips for rally bikes.
They have to hang onto them for 6 hours a day for 15 days straight, so they have to be comfy.
