How Much YouTube Paid My 15K Subscriber Photography Channel in Ad Revenue

- At the beginning of a new year, it's always a time where CZcamsr's give you their analytics as a way to sort of answer some misconceptions about how much they make in ad revenue on CZcams. Usually, those videos are from full-time CZcamsrs or ones that are making a significant amount off of the views from their channel. Since my channel grew from around 6k to 16k in 2020, I thought I'd make a video showing my growing analytics and what you can expect from a "smaller" channel like mine.

Yours has been one of the favourite channels I discovered in 2020! Interesting to hear your breakdown, really puts things into perspective against the amount of time and money we inevitably spend on making videos.
Great info, Benj! Everything you said was SPOT.ON. Cheers!
This is super helpful, thanks for sharing Benj!
Okay Benj let's get 2021 and 2022 up!!
Thank you for your insight Benj!
Very informative and great information. I just subscribed to your channel. BTW, I think your set up looks terrific, uncluttered and easy to watch!!
Thanks for sharing all this info. It's really useful for us photogs!
Super nice to listen to your story and your youtube journey, Benj. I'm a new CZcamsr with a Photography channel, I've been doing this for about a year now, and I'm totally with you in all you said. It's definitely a long term investment. Thanks for sharing it! Keep up the good work.
Its actually pretty cool to see the growth of this channel. You say you were at a loss that year, I only see it as an investment that nearly payed itself off in a year, thats awsome, and you still have all your gear that will help you make quality vids in years to come. Alot of big youtube channels have used far more years to reach this lvl. Your dooing good, keep at it 👍🏻
This is great info Benj! Super inspiring to go from 6 videos to 37 in one year. Congrats!
Yes thats pretty gd.so much work bc pandemic he slow down but financial little unfair But oh so lousy isUtube who make big money by advertiser by using hard workers. I never patient person bc so far,as a photographer,to get my rare unique out there but to work for so little doesnt inspire. So i procastinate &i do miss the real time classroom few find,to connect learn with others and human contact,so not same,as internet learning. I never when chance computers bored me, I couldnt stand sitting long infront a screen, when real world out there, the computer suppose tool, never meant to disconnect human from real life as photographer collecting content need get out bout. Not copycat from internet lazy, ete etc etc. Thanks. Oh how best publish my photography when once, well i definate been finding not worth get out of bed for so little returns, so procastinate wanting learn more hard by internet, information overload. Rare unique dont want be complacent watermarks dont stop copycats distort truth i hesitate, i know can get subscribers as unique, people will want see more,of fascinating intriguing, but in bind to best go about it Benj! interesting hear no beat hiding in bushes truth. Who can give me that kick start once computer people all around but now well few my city really few use, as eg.said to my eye specialist you know not many use computer/ internet this city, he said yes. We expected but how where are the classrooms to build up confidence.
Just loved your reality check ! Amazing ! Keep going
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the video bro
I love your channel. Here you have a supporter from Basque Country!
;)
Watched the mid roll ad, just because of the great tips before it!
A little off topic, but great thumbnail! Quite eye-catching.
You hit a critical point around the 9 minute mark or so where you talked about your time. Gear comes and goes and is an understood expense when doing any sort of content creation (whether it be for CZcams or wedding clients or restaurants or whatever), but your time is worth what it's worth and I would guess after taxes, benefits, residuals, overhead, etc. you actually paid yourself about half of what minimum wage would have been.
Love your channel and your work is incredible. Keep up the good work (but make sure you're paying yourself fairly - both in terms of money and time).
For sure, CZcams is 1/2 hobby, 1/2 slow build to something bigger [hopefully] and the pandemic is what gave me the time to focus more on it. I have plenty of other revenue streams coming in and CZcams does help feed those as well.
Nice
My favorite channel, you have helped to decide me to buy a Leica M10 with a 35/f2,4 summarit lens. Makes it me a better photographer? Yes it did, I have now more control over my photos and it demands me to slow down. 🐌 is my Sony A7III technically bettter? Sure, but makes it better pictures? Nope... Leica gives me a ton of fun and pride..and nicer colors, more sharpness en less digitally looking pictures, almost organic. So thanks for your lovely videos and keep up the good work!!
Thanks, Herbie!
Hey but congrats on getting 1 million total views. That’s pretty epic.
you should make full studio tour 🙈🙏🏼🙏🏼
It’s on the list!
This is a mid roll ad... hahaha. I was like wow, I get it.
haha! glad it worked ;)
I guessed $2k but knew you invested way more than that!
Damn :/ I thought u earn more. My guess was around 20-40k $. Would be nice to see your CPM-s as well. I saw a guy from UK who started last year he is over 10k subs in a year and earn aroun 1k £ / month. (also photo/videographer niche)
Hope your stats and views go higher and u get a decent money from YT! All the best Benj!
Yes lousy hey compared to i trained in advertising, &sales to PR, now advertising my position become kick in gut straight to PR the less educated PR were the end of line i trained them to how promote how become advertisers but now whole sales now people just give up looking its not gd. Eg once a catalogue now go find that catalgue its pages googly not straight forward ass people want info not so vcomplicated as it is now. But oh so lousy time precious but receive so little telling when it is your business not just hobby, Utube taking advantage. Ok if learning no real content but want start something by a idea but when work hard to do so many video get so little returns hard be motivated to keep going when have already real content not just a great snap shot put it out there, get some money hobby is different but oh lousy for so much effort
Then again doing youtube and putting in all the hours is also free education in a way, isn't it?
I am just getting started, and don't really know what I will make videos about in a year from now (I do get the advantage of targeting a niche), but as for now I am happy to just make random videos, get better at filming editing etc. Even if youtube doesn't work out I might be able to offer some video services to photography clients in the future! :)
I had no idea on how much CZcamsrs make. I was told by others they were making a living off of it.
Some are!
The cost of the equipment will be spread out over the years as long as they don't break down and you won't upgrade much this year then you'd have a net gain if all things equal.
For sure, it’s a massive oversimplification but humorous nonetheless
100,000 Dogecoin
:D
8500$
8500$ next year :)
basically do gear reviews . lol. beacaue YT pay and rpm for photography niche is shit lol great video brother
I mean, you can just skip it :)
@@benjhaisch lol no i mean thats what will give the most views. i dont mind gear reviews. my point was it pays shit and the views mainly come from product reviews within our niche. its not a bad thing.
My guess was $6k.. not even close!
Wow I had no ideal that youtube paid so shite. I guess it is free money though and gives you exposure that can lead to bigger and better things.
It’s much bigger as things grow for sure. My strategy just isn’t to rely on ad revenue :)
$3400
Wow even at $3400 I thought I was low balling. Definitely the exposure is the most valuable part
CZcams destroys solid backgrounds with its aggressive compression especially with such falling off lighting.
Great information tho! Which as you stated is the most important thing in an educational video.
totally, it's pretty frustrating
@@benjhaisch It creates such nice and non distracting backgrounds and YT messes with it. That's really unfortunate. I also liked Geralds purple one. I think they need to step their quality way up.
Hope to see how 2021 works out for you. One time investment long-term payoff
New viewer here, so my impression. The dark jacket against a dark background made it look like your face pops out of nowhere. It was just something that diverted my attention away from your presentation, (but I am easily distracted anyway).
Haha!
My guess is $3500-4500
Edit: yeah the payment per 1000 views was way lower than I imagined. I guess advertisers dont care about photographer? Well the audience is the most valuable part.
Did you have a net loss of$300 over the year, or did you gain $2,500 in equipment? Next year your profits should rise as the tools used are paid for. When I bought equipment for my business, the IRS only allowed me to deduct a portion each year for 5 years. Using the same rules, your equipment cost you $600 this last year.
Yeah, sure. It was less about the actual IRS style financials and more about how generally people assumed I made a lot more money than I really did from the channel :)
