  • I love watching Peter Mckinnon, Matti Haapoja, and all the big CZcamsrs. But there's one problem I just can't get over. This video is talking about the one thing that the big CZcamsrs won't tell you how to do. It's not because they're trying to hold out on you... this stuff just isn't that interesting for their audience. But you're different. Watch to learn more about the photography business.

I have been wanting anybody who is in the industry to speak about business side of photography. Definitely not boring but much needed. Need more of such guidance.

I don't know any youtube photographer shooting global campaigns or in global art galleries. Just content creation/review/tutorials honestly. The reasons for this are varied. Photographers involved in large-scale campaigns often prioritize their work and client relationships over creating content for platforms like CZcams. Additionally, the nature of their projects might involve confidentiality agreements, limiting their ability to share certain aspects of their work publicly.
While some photographers may receive equipment from brands for specific campaigns, it's more common for them to work closely with rental companies or have longstanding relationships with camera manufacturers. Brands may sponsor content creators who have a strong online presence, but the dynamics can be different for established professionals working on major campaigns.

One thing I'd like to add to what you said is that a lot of these big CZcamsrs were early adopters, meaning they were on the platform making content early on. That gave them a solid head start when competition was low. For a new guy just starting out, it's still possible to make it but with the market being so overcrowded, you either need a great on camera personality and a lot of free time and patience, or to have a niche that you're exceptional at. The problem with that second option is that you'll find yourself making the same videos over and over again, because realistically, how many videos can you make on just one specific niche? I don't want to discourage anyone wanting to make it on CZcams though, but it needs to be looked at like any other business now, with a clear plan and everything. There's no way to avoid it if you're serious about it. Chris is totally right.

100% has to be treated like any other business.
There are 1000s of photographers, landscapers, carwashes, etc. but there's always room for someone better to come in.

Hearing you say you have 11,000 subscribers and make 500$ a month, then seeing the 70,000 subs you currently have. It is extremely inspiring to see how much exponential growth there is the longer you are making content.

Tough truths -but practical and essential. One of the strengths of Chris Pieta's videos -despite his Michaelangelo-inspired name- is the focus on these aspects of photography, as opposed to gear-and-technical matters or the easy romanticism of taking pictures. This is about getting down to work.

Great video Chris and you are so right, I follow many of the photographers you do and they make you feel like you can conquer the world. Of course, they don't give the the details or the so called "nitty gritty" to have sustained revenues. You mentioned looking up potential clientele on Amazon and sending 100s of emails a month mining for clients, what if you do not have any experience say in product photography, but you are wanting to start. Would you take a few photo props of a product line they have and send a couple of sample images to spark interest? Again, excellent content and very useful.

I've only seen one other creator talk about actual steps needed to create a business. (Emails, marketing, book keeping) Even talks about his missteps and fails. The fantasy v the reality. Nobody likes the reality part.

Great tips. No clue, why you mixed here Peter and other top photography youtubers? They started same/similar hard way. They have videos about all you just said here. Like in any field, the really high top 1-3% gets the highest payments in the industry. It's the same in sport, mass media, any form of art etc. Particularly Peter has that incredible dynamic energy vibe, what makes him so outstanding. His personality makes him so successful, so different, beside the hard work. People love those vibes. Use them.

Just a bit of critique: you bounce a lot when you talk, it's quite distracting. Probably not an easy habit to change, but I just wanted you to know that it is annoying for me as a viewer, maybe for others too.

Thanks for your kind words Michael.
Here's what I did when I was in that early position. I took a bunch of random products I had laying around my house and took photos of them to build out my portfolio. Once I got confident in my skills I started sending those emails. First to small companies that I think match my skillset, and then larger companies as my client base increased. My creative biz playlist is a great resource for that kind of stuff, I also have a free 20 min course on my website about this too.
