1 - if all you have is the 2 track beat, yes. Otherwise, it’s best to mix the vocals and beat stems together. I usually track vocals at -25 lufs short term for best results and adjust the headphone mix of the beat for the artist

Another useful video. A suggestion for the next one possibly: One common thing I'm finding in a lot of your production is that you're bass is continual and mixed well. I was wondering if you are using strictly VST's for your bass sounds by themselves or if you are side-chaining these to an oscillator? Sean you have some of the best mixing tutorials on the net. I have a question on country vocal processing. seen an interview with mix engineer Justin Niebank where he explains having 3 vocal channels. 1 channel would be a pristine vocal,1 channel with effects and 1 channel with compression with some saturation plug or hardware on " spank". After this he would send to a sub mix. My question is if this is just parallel processing? I ask because he doesn't use the terminology " parallel processing" on a very well known mix engineer's site. I thought you would maybe be of some help. Thankyou for all you do.

Only thing I would recommend, (unless you are being sponsored by the plugins) is telling viewers about some common alternative options to things like the vitamins or the F6. If anyone is curious here are alternatives you can use: Alt to F6 - Nectar 3 ( a lot of us younger guys will grab the izotpye pack) Alt to Vitamins - Ozone 9 has a stereo imager with comparable results. Its like instead of getting rid of furniture (carving out or ducking freq.) you rearranged the bedroom and made it more spacious if that makes sense. Thought maybe you were familiar with that process or since then have added to the two track arsenal. But yes new vid plz. Amazing job. Appreciate what you do.

It depends. If you're sending off for professional mastering, I'd suggest creating some headroom although they'll be limited to what they can do on the instrumental if it was already maximized in your mix.

At the begining of the video you said "the beat is already mixed and mastered". In this case you'll made mastering twice: when you made your beat after mixing it and when you mix your beat with vocals. What's the proper process?
the best case is to master ONCE after the beat and vocals are recorded. However, some beats are already "mastered" in the sense that that they have a limiter or maximization on the stereo bus - in that case, it's a bit more limited
Yo Sean, I use trackspacer on my 2 track beats but when I play the song back on the radio, it sounds thin. Am I adding too much processing in the trackspacer plug-in?
doesnt matter, transients are pushed and beat is mastered so all you would get is mastered beat at -6... The problem is within dynamics of the beat not the general loudness, the beat is pushed to the limits dynamics wise so its done deal, no more touching.. only thing you can do is blend vocals as good as you can and wrap it up
sometimes while record a song it sounds amazing in the studio that sounds amazing in the car or wherever else but it sounds like s*** on the cell phone any suggestions
Could you please explain the sidechaining part. Do you have all the vox sending to a bus track with the sidechain on it, or have all the vox sidechain directly into the plugin? Are you putting Ozone 7 on the master bus or on the beat?

Hey Michael, it depends on the state of the instrumental mix - if it's mixed well and already at commercial levels (possibly even maximized / limited), it just makes more sense to mix your vocals accordingly and only apply a brickwall limiter at 0dB. The dynamics of your mix will thank you :)
Question I have a song I’ve done about 3 yrs or more yrs ago... !!! the song is mix and mastered, but I lost the wave files to the song.. so I wanted to remix the song with another producer who added a beat and alittle music to it..sounds good what he did.. he has his wave files that he created to the beat and music..I wanna get it mix right ,so his music and my vocals would line up correctly ..question is it possible for that to happen, because of my files missing. But he having his wave files can I get it right for radio to play it!!!

hey brotha so i know you don't use fl studio 12... but man everything works great but i cant figure out how to send the sidechain source..i see that you have a "sidechain" bus selection option at the top but in fl studio i dont see it anywhere.. not sure if you know someone that is familiar with fl studio 12 but i spent hours trying to figure it out with no luck lol

I actually put the F6 on the 2 track beat and side chain the vocals through it right on the track. As far as I can tell it works the same.
Also the 400hz ish is a great area for the dynamic eq.... good video man! 😏

That would be my guess! I like TS but you definitely can go too far with it in a hurry, if you’re not careful.

Try checking your mix in mono and try mixing it in mono.

Do you have a single course for mixing, mastering the instrumental beat and mixing, mastering the vocals using Logic Pro stock plugins only?
Aren't you supposed to Side chain the Beat to the Vocals? Wouldn't that mean you have to put a compressor on the beat?
That's what F6 is doing here in the video although it's a dynamic EQ, not a compressor :)
What stock plug-ins in CUBASE can be used in place of the ones u used here for instead of Ozone and the other ones
Cubase Pro has Limiter, Maximizer, Imager and Multi-band Compressor - not certain if other versions have these. Hopefully this helps!
