    I just wanna say. I've been recording and mixing music for a long time. Long before the days of CZcams. Nowadays there is a TON of trash on this site with examples and use-cases that are so ridiculously cheesy that it's very difficult to envision how it can be used practically, in a real world mix... YOU, my friend have got a dope channel. Your tutorials are clean and concise but more importantly, you give very high quality real world examples that are relevant and current to today's popular music. You have earned yourself a sub and a like on every video -- Keep up the great work, Sean!

Your tutorials have changed the way I approach every session starting with the production all the way through the mastering. I used to be 100% Pro Tools but lately after some arguing with Avid about the new Pro Tools 2018, I have switched over to Logic and have been more than happy with recording in Logic! But anyways if I end up getting an RME I will make sure to buy it thru a link on here to help support ya man! I'm feeling to get better and better with my homerecording skills! Big up to you!
    I recently got my hands on a Shure SM7B and still trying to get my best setup for recording raps with it. I'm wondering if you use the bass rolloff of the Shure, or if you prefer taking away the bass frequencies later in the DAW? I see you using a rolloff on the RME interface.
    I have a more deeper voice to record, should I then let the settings flat, or still rolloff on the SM7B or the interface?

    • @SeanDivine

    Hello Sean,
    Just wanted to say this is great work. Valuable lessons to help upcoming producers and artists. My question for you is, how do you deal with vocal pops and clicks post recording and some weird saliva noises especially for recordings like these (rap vocals, metal vocals). When problems like that occur they get magnified on processing. On the other hand using declicker or de noise plugins kinda destroy the vocals in a bad way. Any advice on that? Thanks in advance!

    Great Video Sean, quick question about mixing into a 2 track instrumental... The two track I'm using is peaking at zero and when I try to bring in my vocals at levels that would sit well within the instrumental I get major clipping on my mix bus. I don't hear any noticeable distortion though. Should I ignore the clipping if there is no distortion or should I keep the levels of everything including the beat pulled back with my gain staging and just bring up all the levels in the mastering process?

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  Pƙed 5 lety

      there's a few ways to approach this but if the beat is already at commercial levels, you're better off placing a transparent brickwall limiter at -0.1 true peak just to keep it from clipping and mix your vocals accordingly. You wouldn't want to adjust the beat levels and then have to do excessive limiting to get it back up.

    do you use the comping feature in logic? I find it really useful to record a bunch of takes and comp within one track. If I ever want to separate part of it onto a new track it's easy to do that as well. But for just trying to get a master comp I love using that feature in Logic. Are you against that? For some reason I get the vibe that you are.

    Hey Sean, dope video. But I have a question, how can you create headroom in the mix without putting down the volume of the 2 track beat? I seen that ppl lower the 2 track beat by like -6db or -3db. I want to know how do you accomplish headroom in a mix. Thanks!

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  Pƙed 4 lety +2

      hey Edgar, if the beat is already maximized at commercial levels, the only way to create headroom is to turn the volume down. As I've mentioned before, if it's already at commercial levels with a great balance, it's easier to simply leave it as is and mix your vocals accordingly to avoid excessive limiting in the mastering process.

    The rme totalmix fx programme you was using to control your pre amp gain and input recording effect, is this the software specifically made to your interface or is it an external plug in? I currently own the komplete audio 2 interface with no pre amp, and control my input gain externally on the interface, I don’t have a pre amp as the interface has phantom power 48v included and, is this good enough?

      it definitely has more lows / low mids than most. Depending on your vocals type, you may need to cut out a lot of it (I do as well)

    After you record with the gain on your channel do you leave it when it comes to the mixing process?if I'm understanding right you just get the vocal loud enough with the gain so it sits with the instrumental and also so it can be heard during tracking.leave the gain during mixing and adjust your faders to taste. So if you take the gain off the vocals they will be extremely low.When you use compression you will have to turn the make up gain really loud to match the output of the instrumental.

      @SeanDivine  Pƙed 6 lety

      Hi Demetrice! Yes, the actual signal gain is set but we may adjust the level in the mix in response to compression, EQ, balancing, etc.

    • @readyrecordsllc3786
      @readyrecordsllc3786 Pƙed 6 lety

      Sean i tried your technique worked wonders with the artist hearing themselves but as far as taking the gain of during mixing i can never get the vocal loud enough with compression eq to match the instrumental.I keep the output of the compressor the same as the input so there is really no volume change from the original recorded signal.

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  Pƙed 6 lety

      Understood. You should try adjusting the make up gain (or output) of the compressor since it will be reducing the volume of the vocal.

    Sean Divine! Been watching for about 3 years now! Great content, I have a question.
    I’m recording vocals on the SM7B into the cloudlifter and focusrite interface and then Logic Pro X.
    I don’t believe there is a visual metering system for my interface like you have on yours and I wanted to know if metering the way I am metering is a problem.
    I’m testing levels without any processing and turning up my preamp gain until the meter on my mic track is showing in between -6 and -12dbs of headroom. Once I get that level I’m adding a 100hz roll off and a small amount of compression going in. Instead of using the gain plugin I’m using the output control on my compressor and turning that up until I can hear myself better. I wanted to know if doing this process is wrong. I’m especially worried since I do not have a metering system in my interface. I can only monitor my preamp gain control levels on logic. Is this a problem? Sometimes I feel my recordings are a little muffled and maybe distorting a little bit. My rap vocals always come in super boomy and a lot of low end. Mixing is a whole different story and I’ve gotten way better. Just need to know if the way I am “finding the sweet spot” is the wrong way.

    Hey Sean quick question? Do you have a video discussing how you go about mastering song you record to a 2track.. if not how do you go about mastering when the beat is already mastered and your vocals are not? I’m pretty sure the added vocals will make you clip in the master.

    Sean, I really think I'm onto something which could turn out quite great. I just recording my first verse today and it's actually already lit. My progress has increased so fast since I start production recently. If I send you something do you think you'd be able to tell me if there's anything I could change with the vocals? I can DM you on insta if you're interested, thanks.

    I have a huge problem with harshness in vocals on certain words, and i use a dynamic eq to try to get them out, but that often creates new ones and dulls the vocal. These frequencies are mostly because i work with rappers with cheap mics and untreated rooms. Any tips?

      I'm using the RME UFX. The SM7b still hisses with every preamp I've heard but I use a noise gate which helps.

    • @SeanDivine

      no problem Hugo! I tend to do both - just depends on where I am in the process. For my album I recorded and mixed both vocals and the beats in the same sessions.

      I thought this too, but Sean's method makes perfect sense because there is no need to further process the beat with limiters or compressors, maybe EQ. The beat is already mastered, so you need to master the vocals to fit in the mastered beat, if that makes sense. Sean is one smart dude.

    • @sainvilbidoom9265
      @sainvilbidoom9265 Pƙed 7 lety

      Juo Jual but you have to master the song again, for me I guess it's no trouble to lower down the beat in fit the the vocal and then master the song , because it's all about the song , tell me if I'm wrong please

    • @JUOJUAL
      @JUOJUAL Pƙed 7 lety +1

      I would think you would only need to master all vocals as stereo mix within the beat, I would think further processing on the beat would start to destroy it. But I also see your point because introducing the vocals will add additional level to the whole mix/master bus. The thing is, there is no right or wrong but I really see what Sean is talking about and it makes perfect sense.

I have a question about interfaces - I also use Logic, a Shure SM7B, and a Cloudlifter for recording hip-hop vocals, and I want to upgrade my Scarlett 2i2 to a better interface under $1,000. Would you choose the RME Babyface Pro FS over the Apollo Twin X, or should I consider any others?

    your videos are seriously helpful man... I appreciate you sharing the knowledge. I had one question though: what is your opinion on zoom h6 recorder as a mic and interface to record vocals? combined with pop filter and reflection shield. I have an sm57 as well, but i find my lexicon alpha interface has a very parabolic gain curve so tracking it smooth is quite tough as most of the time the signal is either extremely loud or extremely soft. Which would you use to record? Thanks for the help

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  Pƙed 7 lety +1

      I actually own a zoom h6 but use it as a field recorder. It's fantastic for that... the audio interface and preamps are ok but I wouldn't use the mics for traditionally recording vocals.

    Do your punches have to be the same level ? I notice one is a little higher than the other, & on another video I saw that u did 3 layers and then 2 punches & u left the first 3 layers up the middle, Just trying to figure out which way is best bro

    • @SeanDivine

      doesn't have to be exact, that's what mixing is for - you can always balance them afterwards 👍
