  • In a true study, we show how to kill fire ants naturally with diatomaceous earth. Learn how to kill fire ants naturally and easily with no poisons. Many people ask if diatomaceous earth really works on fire ant mounds. We provide quick and simple facts on the performance of diatomaceous earth.
    We show you how easy it is to apply and the end results for thirty one fire ant mounds. If you don't want to use poison or gasoline on fire ants in your vegetable garden, this study will inform you. Diatomaceous earth is great around the garden because it is a way to keep insects at bay without poisons. Please use strategically because it will also kill bees.
    If you really want to know how to kill fire ants naturally and want proof that diatomaceous earth will get the job done, check out our fire ants study video.

    I was wrong!
    This treatment works very well without compromising the safety of livestock, pets, or children.
    Follow the instructions that Mr. Jamie clearly explains in the video, you will be pleasantly surprised.

    For the sake of science something I would have liked to know was how many new mounds you found on your property outside of your treated ones. A big reason fire ants can be difficult to eliminate is because when they're disturbed they'll split and migrate their damaged mound, so a mound is dead but the ants are just in a different spot in the yard. That being said, worst case scenario it definitely seems like a good way to get them out of sensitive areas.

    • @useful.knowledge
      @useful.knowledge  Před 2 lety

      Here the truth. My place still has less ants than it had before the ant study. I killed a lot of mounds. I get that they can move but these died and I would have not put the video out if the DE didn’t work.

      @@useful.knowledge As said from a scientific perspective, that would have been a nice data point to prove effectiveness in a future trial. It is the main reason nay sayers in the scientific community recommend other options, I've had 100% success with spinosad granules over night for example. I was still very happy to see your method, it's much more effective than how I've seen other people try to treat mounds with DE and I'm going to give it a shot

  • @danielb1877
    @danielb1877 Před 2 lety +6

    Good video, thanks! A more scientific method would be a randomized controlled trial... number the mounds and randomly select 50% of the mounds to be treated with DE and the other 50% to be left alone. A pessimist could make an argument that your results were due to some extraneous factor (e.g. weather or the flags you placed causing them to die... unlikely). I doubt they were due to extraneous factors. I have used DE quite a bit to kill ants and keep them out of animal feed outside. I just sprinkle DE in the area where I feed my barn cats and ants no longer attack their food bowls.

    • @useful.knowledge
      @useful.knowledge  Před 2 lety +1

    Loved your use of data...sharing percentages shows while it wasn't 100% effective, it is a viable solution to ridding a yard of fire ants....I had 6 mounds...got rid of 5 of them and treated the last one twice and waiting for that one to go also! Thank you so much for this info

      Absolutely do the video! We need more folks understanding that this will work in their garden. Just understand that it will not be an instant kill like poison or gasoline. Thank you so much for always giving such helpful advice. My family loves your channel. We have fire ants here and they are terrible. My trouble is we treat them and it seems like the mound is dead but then more mounds appear. I am willing to try anything just wanted to know if you had noticed anything similar to what we have had (does the diatomaceous earth kill them or irritate them and they move and make another mound)

    • @useful.knowledge
      @useful.knowledge  Před 4 lety +10

      Thanks for the kind comments. The reason I did this ant study is because diatomaceous earth (DE) works for me but I have had several folks say that it didn’t work for them. I wanted some proof.
      I have found that if you don’t put the DE around the outside of the mound, they may try to move the mound. During the test, I had one (this mound was in my yard) that tried to rebuild but they didn’t move far enough and they died. I think the key is to put the DE on unapologetically which means put a lot on and around the mounds. I also think its good find about a week of dry days and treat the mound. If it rains, you need to reapply.
      I also use it on my corn for flea beetles and tomatoes for aphids. I thinks it’s great because I can use it on my garden and it’s not poison.

    I'm going to try this. I don't want to use any chemicals since the fire ants are right out the front door where the dogs will step on it. It's not a mound though. They tunneled through a space in the concrete. There are some mounds in the grass that I'm going to cover with the dimataceous earth. I'd rather use a natural product when possible. I definitely do not have 40 mounds that I can just walk around and find. I think it did make a difference. I’m currently filming a video where I put this on a really huge mound. FIRE ANTS!! Any One try?? Running a hose from your Exhaust Pipe into the Ant-Mound.
    Exhaust is heaver than air, and the exhaust should fill up the ant mound and wipe them out.

      Hi. I would stir them up and put diatomaceous earth on them. It may take a few applications but the goal is to get DE on as many of the ants as possible. It’s non-poisonous. I use DE in my garden for fire ants, flea beetles on my corn, and aphids.

    It kills due to being a fine powder, it's not exactly anything in the powder that kills it, just the fact its so fine, it can kill fire ants, but it's not super effective, most of the time they will just relocate somewhere else.
    Fire ants breath through their joints, the dust is so fine it can fill these openings causing the ants to suffocate, it's a creative approach I'll give it that, but it heavily relies on how many ants are killed, if enough survive (about all that don't come in contact) than the colony can survive, and often relocate. If enough die (many types of ants) than the colony starves, resulting in the collapse, many types of ants though, it's mostly worker ants that come out when the mound is disturbed.
    Worker ant's also gather the food for the colony, so if enough die they lose their ability to collect food, I'm sure you get he point here, you are hoping to suffocate enough to kill them all from starvation, there is a chance they can move though, or only part of the colony dies (typically happens when they move) allowing them to have enough worker ants to feed the remaining colony. Pesticides (or insecticides) are neural toxins, they rely on contact, and close proximity, to effectively paralyze the ants, in hopes of also starving the remaining colony out.

      Hi. According to many studies on the properties of diatomaceous earth, the fine power is abrasive and damages the exoskeleton of the ants. The damaged exoskeleton allows the ants to basically dry out. I find it very effective especially if you don’t want to use insecticides in your garden or in your yard.
      Why did we do the study? Us Useful Knowledge folks test things for a living. We wanted to prove to ourselves how effective diatomaceous earth really is in a test.
      The reason for stirring up the mound is to get it on as many workers as possible. They take it through the mound. Also the circle around the mound helps to starve the mound even further.
      This was a true study and the results were what we showed in the video.
