I bought a cheap Ferrari F430 with a Gated Manual Transmission. These are super rare models! Only issue is that this ferrari was an ex track day rental car and the engine and gearbox was in a thousand pieces when it got delivered. Ive now got to rebuild the car & the engine whilst keeping the whole thing cost effective!

Your dad’s knowledge and time is forever proving to be invaluable. He is truly a legend and I hope he can see how much your fan base love him around 👌🏼
He's great isn't he. A big part of the channel.
Im only here for his laugh if im honest.
It's good to see a son and his father getting on so well together, on air anyway. :)
He’s such a sweet guy too!😊
Man i was just wondering that..I mean any car he knows it like he is some car magician!!! What a cool dad
Love that you show building up the engine step by step. Not a lot of people show all the detail. Appreciate it and looking forward to the rest.
welcome zollo

I would strongly recommend you watching @m539restorations he rebuilds bmws only but my god he shows you everything including torque specs

21:52 Hey mat, ring gaps are calculated from the bore size X factor. The factor changes depending the piston. So forged and cast pistons will require less gap a than hyper-eutectic piston. The other thing to consider when determining the factor is how the engine is destined to be used. So N/A street driven engine is different to an engine with boost.
If you can’t find the torque specs you require, consider replacing the factory fasteners with new fasteners from ARP. I’ve always used the ARP’s recommend torque spec which they determine by the size of the fastener.

You are one of the few CZcamsrs that actually makes a video rebuilding a car and doesn't spend half the video making/eating a sandwich, talking nonsense while cleaning the car for 5 min of the video, etc. Thank you for the top quality content!!

Depends if i like the people or not, sometimes thats chill
I think your dad needs more recognition for what he brings to the table.
It's obvious they have a great loving relationship and to any father that's the best compensation.
Yeah man. Look at the look at his father’s face. He is doing this because he absolutely loves it and even more to be doing it with his son. He is 100% not doing it to have his own CZcams channel. This fucking new generation. Finding problems where there are none. And always seeing things where there aren’t none to be seen. Back before you guys we used to have relationships with our fathers and family. That didn’t require validation 24/7 on social media to prove to others that we had them. The people that mattered knew how much they meant to us and vice versa. It had nothing to do with making meaningless comments on video or pictures w long texts to make ourselves feel better because we probably forgot someone “important to you” birthday or didn’t bother to call or visit him. Back then we visited. Made a point to call. To spend time with them. And that’s exactly what Matt is doing.
@@feliperea3271 bro u dont need to make it about being a generational problem. 🤣🤣 nothing wrong with just saying you appreciate your family once in a while, which im sure he does just not on camera
He seems pretty conservative so there's that.Glad to see dad and son doing a project.
Spoiler alert...!
This man is rebuilding a 60K+ pound vehicle & Engine, records it, has time to edit the videos, updates the website and also designs and makes the merch! How much time do you have in a day brother!!!! It's amazing and you deserve all good things coming your way.
Absolutely! It would be so tempting to slow the pace and relax a bit once finding success but Mat keeps his foot on the gas! Crazy high quality given how fast he releases
He will have loads of people working for him - but still top work.
Well he has loads of people working for him, most likely he doesn’t do much more than film the videos and do the actual work
@@dimaaftaritethe edits the vids as well
Well he makes more money by uploading these videos so that's definitely a priority, the rebuilding is just extra which I'm sure he doesn't care whether it's successful or not while filming it.
Matt never fails to impress with his endless videos. Your work ethic is legendary.

Great to see Hannah and your Dad. You all make an awesome crew and contribute to your success ! Give Kevin a scratch from all of us in Tucson!
I love the fact that you take time to explain stuff so well, for someone who might not understand vehicles and engines overly well. There is not a great NEED for folks to understand things now as so much is just disposable or all done by the workshop, however even if you are never going to use a spanner it is good to have a basic understanding of how things work. Cracking channel great work, a true inspiration. Well done to ALL of you.
What a great energy you two give off working together. You made my day. Bloody hell I miss my dad
Plus one my fren
I never had a meaningful relationship with my late Dad. He passed away back in '06 and I miss him every single day. But watching you and your Dad working together brought back old memories with mine. I know this gets mentioned quite a lot- and too rightly it should, your Dad is an integral and important part of your channel and one of the main reasons why I watch you both work on some amazing dream cars of mine and why I subscribe to your channel. He is truly amazing, Mat. Please give him a huge hug from me- and anyone else in my position. Can't wait to see F430 completed. Keep up the grand work.
I lost my dad in ‘84 but when so much love is involved we still try to make them proud of us.🙏

Matt.....Use your spare engine to check out what those cylinder head bolts are torqued to. It won't be perfect, but it should be pretty close if you can't get the official specs.

I watched all the videos about RS6 (and cant wait for an update). Now I am on the F430 and I have to say, this is so nice to watch.... you working with your dad, the passion, the smiles, the approach towards any kind of problem. Thats an example to everybody. I can imagine that in normal garage it is just about nerves, swearing and pressure but this is genuinely pleasant to watch. Big thumbs up and keep up the good work :)

You have inspired me to repair stuff on my car that I wouldn't have done in the past, cheers Mat, great to see Hannah, and your Dad..legend.
One of the reasons Mat stands out from the rest is that he's learning and teaching us along the way. Huge respect to you.
Why isn't a big tool brand already sponsoring him?
I wouldn’t listen to anything he’s said or emulate what he’s done to rebuild this engine. He did multiple things wrong and that engine will not last. Even basic knowledge would have stopped the mistakes he made.
@@TheHannukahZombie You can't be perfect mate. He made mistakes, he learnt from it :)
I have the Ferrari workshop manual for the gearbox. I can probably try to get the engine manual too 👍👍
I just had to rebuild my F430 Challenge gearbox if you need any info on that👌
Im all the way from South Africa. I love how you used the Amapiano beat in the episode. Amapiano is a music genre from South Africa 🇿🇦
Hey Matt, awesome to see you and your Dad in the garage together Mate. Living vicariously through the two of you, brings back memories of my own!
Finally the second video with the Ferrariiiiii🎉🎉🎉
Typically when reusing valve springs, valves, keepers, rockers they ALL must go back in the place they came out off. Valve guides wear with the valve stem, springs have a seat pressure spec set at the factory, rockers wear a pattern on their valve tips and so on. The cams/ cam caps absolutley need to go back where they came from as they wear a pattern into the head/ lobes. Definetly try not to mix cams from head to head. Best case scenario you get away with it all and worst case you wear down that drivetrain in 10,000 miles or less. I'd be cutting my oil filters apart for next 10k looking for glitter. Hopefully all these details don't come back to bite you in the arse.
I would have personally just used the assembled complete heads from the free motor you got and just sent them to a capable machine shop for a cleaning and health ck, maybe valve seals depending on miles/ kms.
For ring gap you can copy the gap from your bent con rod/ piston set up. Take the rings off it and insert em into the block you didn't hone. If it's all stock unmodified parts (stock bore) the gap reading should be the same. Ring gaps aren't something that wears with use. As for torque specs on critical things like rods, heads, mains i would absolutely not F around. Pay a hacker to dig into Rarris network if ya have to but do not guess trq specs or sequences on critical parts. While you have the block apart I'd also invest in a proper bore gauge and measure each bore top and bottom to make sure the bores aren't out of spec needing oversized rings. Your dad was moving too slow (up and down) with that hone fyi.
A compression check of all cylinders before firing up the engine should tell you how well you put the thing back together. Best of luck! and i'll have the popcorn out watching this build unfold!
edit: forgot to mention the obvious but absolutley do not forget to put the straighest of straight edges in your arsenal on both heads and block sealing surfaces before bolting em together. use a flash light from one side and look for ANY light coming through the other. you have no clue why that engine was taken apart and if the track guys overheated it aluminum heads tend to warp if you even look at them the wrong way.
haha🤣
I was watching the video think the same things, great comment and he needs to see it 😭.
You pretty much said it all. The hardware all being put back in their orginal place where they wore against each other, honing the cylinders, ring gap, skimming the head, compression test, precise measurements, torque specs etc. This isnt a 50cc moped, and even then I would still do the same on any engine no matter cheap or expensive it was.
That engine most likely will not hold together for long.
They also didn’t lap the valves..
Great to see you, Hannah, your mates and your dad at FoS on Friday. I really enjoy your teams builds and channel but didn’t want to interrupt your day to say so as you were off duty. All I can say is when you and your group were approach you were all very humble and friendly which was super to see. Not up yourselves at all so what you see on the channel is backed up by what you get in reality. All credit and here’s to your continued success.
I've been watching your videos since yesterday, I watched the murci and 720 build. I love how you don't just throw money to parts but instead you go for ideal but low cost parts and that is lovely!
Couldn't agree more, with all the comments about how involving, detailed and passionate your work is. Keep adding the detailed explanations, diagrams and video inserts....this is what sets you apart from the rest.... and the humour. Keep it up Mat ❤️😀
I used to feel pity for the people with those engine problems on supercars, but now it just irritates me how poor design of Ferrari and Lamborghini engines causes those expensive repairs.
You really have hit CZcams gold. Great content, well edited, well presented and just the right length.
This is shaping up to be another awesome build series...by far and away the best motoring channel on any platform including TV! Well done Mat
Love the build Mat. Just one thing I noticed from the video (you mightve not shown it), make sure that when you are honing the cylinders, that you move up and down quickly with the tool that your dad was using. You want adequate cross-hatching so that when you install the pistons, the piston rings grab against the wall adequately and give you the proper compression and no oil goes into combustion chamber during operation. Cheers.
good call.
The cross hatching allows the oil to form a film, yeah?
If perfectly smooth, the oil is unable to cling to the cylinder wall(?).
@@cweednzYeah thats correct. It is so that the piston rings seat against the wall properly and seal the combustion chamber from the crank case.
The scratches made with the honingtool have to have an about 45 degree angle, so the pistonrings can shear off the oil from the zylinderwalls without the danger of grabbing into the zylinderwall itself.
Probably a good idea to have a machine shop check the heads and block deck for flatness at the very least.
Yea and it looks like they are going to keep the original head studs too, not sure about ferrari but in general they stretch and need to replaced with every rebuild
@@pomidor773 that is usually the case with factory bolts but studs are usually reusable.. but yes I agree the head and main studs should be looked into. I love his rebuilds but the engine work they do makes me uneasy haha
Yup… although I do t think it’s the end of the world with an all aluminum engine (aluminum block mated to aluminum heads)… I would for sure do it anyways and have the machinist take all the way down to the service limit to get a little extra compression.
Decking is for sure a must if you have an iron block with aluminum heads…
No corrosion, no head blown, they would have checked with a straight edge, whats the big deal?
@@bigdundee12345 tell me you don’t build motors without telling me you don’t build motors…
Great video as usual, brilliant the way you explain the simple engineering and engine stuff, rather than just expecting everyone to understand...as some people wouldn't...👍 keep up the hard work..🔧⚙️
This tube gets better and better, and its lovely that you do it with your dad,it brings back lovely memories for me,when i would rebuild engines with my Dad,and do the old valve grinding.Keep up the great work.
As someone else mentioned , when honing the cylinder bores you need to effect cross hatching !!
You can’t just hone the cylinders. You have to crosshatch the cylinders with either a hone or a glaze breaker ball hone. If you don’t the rings will not seat properly. The car is looking good and nice job on the valves.
The cross hatch is also where the oil sits to lubricate the cylinder walls
exactly! hey ruined the engine! he hammered with STEELE on the Valve-heads.. next failure! But it is CZcams.... there 99% people with no idea what they do
@@Bartleby982 Yep, those heads will hairline crack long term now.
Those valve stem seals will leak over time too, seal protectors literally come in the box. Gonna be a lot of blue smoke out the exhaust.
I wonder if they washed the block again after honing?
Your dads an absolute legend!! What a relationship you two have!
Keep up the great work guys!!
Mat, don't bin the "bad" crank, it can be reground and use with thicker bearings. As long as it's straight it's good.
Cylinders should have a 45° crosshatch honed into them, not be nice and smooth.
Agreed, also make sure the rear flange on those 2 cranks are exactly the same from automatic to manual. The diameter and depth of the counter bore and bolt holes. It would be a shame if the stickshift flywheel and/or transmission doesn't fit after the motor is complete.
@@toyotabob7535the Auto in a Ferrari is a manual gearbox with an external electro hydraulic selector unit.
Let’s hope it doesn’t smoke
@@thomastolster3934 BS! Original sleeves have a cross hatch pattern in them. And I've seen worse cranks that that being saved.
@@Skurvster I would've measured the cylinders for roundness, size and "chimneying" before I put it together. It might be so worn that they have to do oversize piston rings.

He is in Uganda and i am in Europe .. Thanks so much fi dat ,,, God bless u with your work..
WOW! That detail job really brought life back into this Rarri!
Here is a trick for the future. Get an electronic torque wrench and write down the loosening torque of the bolts. In theory it takes about 95% of the torque to loosen than to tighten under ideal conditions (bolts that are not corroded or seized).
does that account for bolt stretch?
Trick for the future is dont overpay by 100% for a car
@@geordieboy77yes, stretch is a consequence of the torque applied. You pull to torque and that is then including the stretch.
I was taught never to use a torque wrench to loosen bolts, as it throws the wrench out of spec. Are electronic wrenches protected against this?
@@HotTacticalBoyfriendOfficialext time someone tells you this, ask them how they thight a bolt with a left thread... you should probably not loosen a bolt that has been tightened to let's say 200 Nm with a torque wrench set to 50Nm. It probably has to do with what kind of torque wrench you work. Some huse a spring, that presses a square part (like a cube) against another flat surface inside the handle. Think of it like when you hold two squares of wood and clamp another one between them, you can now turn them without them falling apart. As long as the force of the two outer blocks pressing on the center block is higher than the resistance that would be applied to the center one, it won't fall out. Thats what makes the clicking noise in a torque wrench, its when the torque is higher than the pressure applied by the spring on the square part, and the square part flips/ tips over. Excessive load on the flipping square surely isn't the best thing, but if you set the torque wremch high enough the pressure of the spring will be higher and as the torque and it wont flip/ tilt. Probably not the best explaining but I tried :)
