    This is a Rare Kelly Wood Slasher hewing axe from the 1900's. I restored this antique axe by using evaporust, sandblasting and wire wheeling. I wanted to leave the natural pitting from years upon years of rust build up. For the handle I used curly maple with a walnut stringer. Let me know what you think about this restoration.

    The line you pointed out as a temper line is a "bit" more than that. Its where a piece of hardenable steel was inserted into the iron. It was done this way for a few reasons, to make shaping the axe head easier, and to save on materials being chief among them. So you were technically correct without defining the different materials used. The other comment below about the haft is spot on about the curve, they really try to keep you from chopping off your feet.

      In addition the iron is a lot more flexible while the steel is brittle. If you made the entire axe out of hardened tools steal this the axe could shatter a bit like like glass if given enough stress :)

    That is a hewing axe. I think you have it on the handle upside down. The previous owner would have worn the end of the axe more in use, so it has become rounded over. They may also have abused it by doing something other than hewing with it. One can only speculate. It looks like it was made to cock the blade a little so that it would land flatter when you swing from above, as you would do working. Handles would be made from green wood and they could be done to the user's liking, but always with a set away from the flat side, so you don't "bark" your knuckles during work. The head end is bent to the desired angle and fastened down, allowing it to dry in the right shape. It is important to split the handle from straight wood, ash or hickory, so that the grain doesn't run out and weaken the handle. You can also fashion a handle from a piece of wood where the grain bends at the right angle on its own, but you might have to look long and hard for that piece. Ash and hickory are tough woods, meaning that they have a degree of elasticity and can absorb the shock of constant blows and twists that is involved in hewing. The woods you have chosen are not tough in this way. They are somewhat brittle for this purpose, and you have also sawn them, so the grain may go anywhere and you may have built in an extra weakness. Be careful using this axe. A heavy piece of sharpened steel flying randomly through any space is something you most likely do not want to encounter. Your handle looks beautiful, but a hewing axe is something to be used, and should be designed with that use in mind. I also want to point out that the flat side of the axe should be perfectly flat, and carefully maintained like that. When you went over it with the grinder, you destroyed the ability of the tool to bite into wood at a shallow angle and remove thin pieces in the hewing process. This may even make it dangerous, because it will tend to bounce away from the wood with each stroke. And finally, a blacksmith might be able to weld a new edge onto this blade, but you would have to decide if the cost is worth it.

    • @jimmerseiber
      @jimmerseiber Před 2 lety +3

      The knowledge is appreciated..but it's clear he wanted to make more of an art piece, and it looks like it's biting into the wood just find at the end.. I think it looks cool with it flipped like that. He made his own new thing, not recreated it back to its original form.

    • @gregblake2764
      @gregblake2764 Před rokem

      The handle is oriented correctly to the head. However your comments regarding curly maple and walnut being too brittle to safely use for an axe handle are correct. If, as others have suggested, the axe is now a display piece and not a working tool it really doesn't matter what wood was used for the handle.

    Pretty sure that originally the handle would have been off-set to the side so that one could stand both feet on the ground next to the log and still hew a flat side onto a log with the flat edge of the ax.
    Since your handle is not off-set, you would have to stand with one foot on the log and one foot off and swing between your legs to cut a flat side on the log.

      Thanks for the info James. Very interesting. I wish I could have seen what the handle looked like! The axe head itself is actually off centered quite a bit. At first I thought it was bent out of shape, but after research I realized it was meant to be off-set. This may also mean that the handle does not get in the way while hewing. (I am no expert on axe history and using hewing axes, so I just create what I know at the time.) I think the axe head is off-set enough that the handle is out of the way.

      @@JAdams-jx5ek Oh wow! It has a nice curve on the handle to offset that. I was expecting a small offset. Those are much more than I anticipated.

      Good point James and great links, but they both fail to mention one typical point about broadaxes. In addition to the handle being off-set, the handles were often not fixed firmly so that one could take the axehead off the handle and switch the off-set the other way. This would enable one to use the axe either left or right handed. That's why the eye of the axe is symmetrical both ways. This is especially useful if one is doing the final hew on a finished wall of a log house and getting into the corner is an issue. I'm not 100% sure if this was done in the US, but in Scandinavia and Finland that was the way it was done.

      oh for sure! I paid about $80 for 6 ft of curly maple (1x6"). I used the walnut that was leftover from a previous project but all in all I would say this is about $50 in wood ( I used about 1/3 of the curly maple). Wood is outrageous.

    Ok I will be your critic for today. You see channels like my mechanic are for people with OCD, people obsessed with perfection. What you have done here is good but annoying for some to watch. For example the gap where the handle and the metal is not addressed. The axe surface is not treated, its still bumpy. You didnt really sharpen it properly. You didn't make the curve of the axe right. The darker walnut should have sandwiched the other timber.. I could go on.

      Yes I am in no way a professional nor do I claim to be. I just like to do this for myself. I could have easily grinded all the bumps away but I wanted to leave it looking as if it were still 100 years old and rough.

      This is an interesting comment. It requires a very specific point of view. What I mean is, art is subjective. The axe grinding part, I liked what he did. To me it was obvious that he did that as a stylistic choice.
      The handle/axe head imperfections, as the person doing it, would have driven me insane until I got it perfect, but I'm a recovering perfectionist who frequently relapses.
      All in all, I thought the project "felt" like a major success. It was an art project and in art perfect is subjective.
      Your comment is something, definitely, to be appreciated, and makes for great discussion.
