If you follow "Smart Cities" discussions out of Silicon Valley, this is very obviously their end goal. Tech billionaires are frustrated that they can't do whatever they want in cities (for example, how Sidewalk Labs left Toronto), so they want to build their own.
You'll start to hear more about the concept of the "opt-in city". This is a city built from scratch with Silicon Valley tech, and one that they have complete control over. Residents would "opt-in", and agree to the terms of the service to live there. This neatly gets around data privacy issues and dealing with people who haven't bought into the concept.
These places are going to seem pretty shiny and cool, and will initially attract young tech workers. But I am not looking forward to the end game of a feudal-ruled libertarian tech city where every complex human problem has a "simple" high-tech "solution."

The return of company cities is very troubling. In Nevada, they are allowing companies to run cities. This is doom for workers and workers movements who already can't unionize and have no say in their lives.
I'm a Musk fan myself, but I wouldn't want to love under Musk law. Companies shouldn't have such control over people's lives
Unions have destroyed entire industries in the U.S.--the steel industry for example. They're currently utterly destroying the K-12 education also.

Apparently this is one of the few places left where one can get coastal property at an affordable price. Before Musk got there it was know for its tranquility too. It is quite lucrative for working class retirees. Just a affordable, quite ocean side place in the middle of nowhere to enjoy your golden years. I guess all good things get ruined. Shame, looks like a nice place.
Im a 7th generation Hispanic Texan. My family had land grants from Spain here. That coastal area is going to be destroyed. It’s sad. Also no one is talking about how he burned down 100 acres of a National park nearby during one of his stupid rocket launches. Unfortunately ppl are letting him get AwY with murder here because we have been ignored since Texas was acquired.

While I can certainly see this, I also have to say: Space exploration is and advancements in rocket science are needed and should be pushed. NIMBYs will exist on every coast, so you have to sacrifice some piece of nature and private housing in almost every case either way.

We’ve come full circle. Company towns seem pretty uncommon in practice today, even though they were a big cultural thing in the US in the past. Learning some context about those after watching October Sky long ago in school was one of the most relatable moments I had in any history class. Knowing so many people whose grandparents worked in those sorts of conditions made it much more understandable (my grandfathers were a steel worker and an engineer, so it was a bit different for me personally).
Edit: Not meaning this as though they were a good thing, just a very close feeling part of the history of where I am from.
One question that I've had for a little while now is whether cities ever decide to un-incorporate. It would be a pretty drastic move to give up the self-governance that comes with being a city, but some small, former industrial cities (i.e. East St Louis or Gary IN) have lost such significant population. Especially since the higher tax brackets are the first to flee these declining cities, there is no way that these cities can afford the costs of providing for their citizens and maintaining the city's infrastructure. Is it possible for a city to give up its incorporated status to receive more support from the county/state, and if so, has it ever happened recently?
I know of one that did. The town of Lealman, in Pinellas County, Florida, discorporated in the early 1970s, and is now Lealman Fire District, which is an unincorporated area of Pinellas County. The residents there pay a special assessment fee to the county every year so they can keep their fire house.
The City of Antelope, Oregon tried to unsucesfully unincorporate as a result of the percieved coup by the Rajneesh movement. It failed as it did not reach a majority, but from my understanding there wouldn't be anything standing against it doing so had it went through.
Well there are two different common events that may happen. There is devolution. Where a smaller division of a polity breaks away into an independent polity or asserts more direct control. Then there is County and provincial services. Sometimes when devolution occurs. The new smaller city cannot provide certain services. It may then depend on the larger county or provincial body to provide those services by contract or a tax structure. These can happen independent of each other too. A large polity with economic problems may defer to a larger county for services and it will relinquish some economic or political control. And sometimes a town or city can devolute from a larger polity and elect to provide their own services and add more.
It actually happens all the time, mostly to smaller towns and villages that can't continue to provide services or are so small that they no longer see a point in remaining unincorporated. An example that is actually located in Texas is the former town (now unincorporated area) of Highlands, Texas. Another situation is when a city is annexed by another city, such as when Harrisburg, Texas was annexed by Houston, Texas.
@@1000rogueleader When an unincorporation does happen, do you know whether the county/state has to consent to allowing the city to remove its incorporation protection? I ask because this would essentially place the burden of the city's responsibilities back on the county/state. I imagine this is not a big deal for formerly-incorporated towns, but for a small city, that burden is substantially larger, and it could be politically problematic for state officials to willingly take on such a large burden if the city does not account for a large percentage of the state's voters. Could the state effectively say "those are your problems, not ours" and refuse to accept an unincorporation?

Really? Because when i heard of this plan my first thought was i bet that in short order it would be the best zip code in the country to have. Why would you feel hes less capable of running a city than existing government? A government that currently is trying to plan a scheme in attrmpt to extort money from his ultra proven, succesful, and forward thinking business to fund their outdated failing one. And as he is busy with space positioning and dominance he wouldnt be putting much thought into running city once built.He would simply install fully capable and loyal people to run it.

Maybe I'm just being a Musk critic as per usual, but I'd expect that if he develops it into a real city, there won't be any sidewalks, there will be three Teslas per household, and it'll be powered by solar. A sheen of "clean" over a system whose construction will have astronomical carbon impact.

In your "Can Miami replace Silicon Valley", you mention the impact briefly mention the impact Stanford had on the Silicon Valley. I would be very interested to see what impact top-level universities have on a region.
Frankly, Berkeley had a way bigger influence than Stanford. The gov't sited their computer research at Lawrence Livermore b/c of Berkeley. Without Berkeley, the initial conditions for the birth of Fairchild, a steady stream of talent and gov't contracts, would've never existed.

Imagine a non-partisan expert state-manager as opposed to a political governor. That state manager would have to maintain the confidence of the state congress (unicameral because bicameral makes no sense if counties can't mirror states in the state senate Reynold v sims 1964).
Unicameral is preferred for unitary states (which us states are--counties are not semi-sovereign like states are with the federal govt).

@@user-nf9xc7ww7m NZ cities are run in a relatively similar manner to American ones in many respects, mind you. The police are controlled by the central government and less officials are elected than in some parts of the USA, but it's still the basic elected mayor and council setup.
MMP is basically trying to hit the same compromise the electoral collage in the USA was* (proportionality vs low population areas getting badly screwed over). It's just a much better implemented system. This... Doesn't really work all that well with cities. Though cities can go full proportional without issue... I mean, it's better to just not have political parties At All (FPP is less defective without them, and proportional systems Require them.) but if you can't manage that....
*Among other compromises, at least as implemented in New Zealand.

To the east you have launch station. No room to expand
To the south you have a wildlife zone, the Rio Grande and Mexico. Limited room there and I dont see them getting a piece of Mexico lmao
To the north and west you have a huge body of water and state park, and ofcourse a major channel with cargo ships going through it. You cant drain it

@@darylmckay I think that depends on how much you value what Elon is doing, I personally think his projects (the majority of them anyway) are going to be very beneficial to humanity. No one would even be talking about having a colony on Mars without him. If this works out (and I think it will), it will be a huge step into levelling up as a civilisation.

I live in the city that the space x area is in and it’s pretty weird to see rockets right at the entrance of the beach that you grew up going to, there was even a small community there that eneded up becoming the space x community, never ended up knowing what happened to the people there.

And maybe this city will be where elon musk will try his First City Plan To Mars as For this City There will only be about Space and stuff and maybe in the future It may became the Capital of Space Trading and Space Exploration or Space transportation Its basically just about space
