@@williamjones4479 I didn't like it in the 1970s because it gave me headaches. I now realize that when I was 8, the 10 year old "Older kid" was simply turning up the volume on the television to painful proportions! I never hated Lost in Space, I always loved it, but it is a boon to watch it now, and realize I don't have to have the volume turned up to painful levels. At the same time, I'm 54 and my hearing is fading.... but it's not dead yet.

If I may say, "Lost in Space" as a series is a bit complicated to try to critique. Episode 1, the series premiere, holds up amazingly well, over fifty years later, in my opinion. And the cast has pointed at that season one was quite serious, before the show's producers were asked to "camp it up," in response to the direct competition from "Batman." I haven't seen much from Season 3 lately, but I recall a return to seriousness as the competition changed. There is more to the story, of course...

There's something so bold about the intro to the second theme when the countdown appears on screen. It was a great, jarring transition from the cold open to the intro. It feels like four successive shots of adrenaline to pump you up for what's to come.
The first one is classic and fits the initial tone of a show titled "Lost in Space." It was more peril and intrigue than high adventure. The second theme has a heroic flair, a bit of tongue-in-cheek that fits the shows transition to color.
It also begins Williams's knack for nesting multiple themes into one. Star Wars, E.T., Raiders, Superman, and Harry Potter all had a variety of themes for the the same thing - not simply the use of leitmotif. I can't pick a favorite example, but the one that leaps out to me is Superman. In his main march there are two distinct and equally indelible and iconic themes. I've always wondered which one people would sing more if you randomly asked 100 people.

John Williams is a timeless time piece. I also grew up with the show...and never missed an episode, which one had to wait a whole WEEK before you got to see another. Then you have Time Tunnel, Land of the Giants and so, so many scores for Star Wars, Saving Private Ryan. This man is an endless talent. Excellent job Cincinnati Pops, and the conductor.

Its a little sad that his music from other show during the same period not that famous. I think he wrote the music for Time-Tunnel as well. :-) czcams.com/video/hq5XLhqs7Ec/video.html ANd I think he even wrote some music for "The land of the giants." :-) czcams.com/video/iMIe5utv4n4/video.html

John Williams also did the background music for Gilligan's island in 1964 . When that Minnow is about to leave the Harbour you see the boats with their sails down and flags lowered. The film clip was done in 1962 just after JFK was shot and the sailors paid their respect because of the Kennedy's history in boating.
Joseph Kennedy got rich during the prohibition days running booze from Canada in his boat .

NO EVERYONE IT WAS MY FAVORITE SHOW. I was born in 1969 so the show was in syndication and I would watch it after church on Sundays. Judy and Penny were crushes for this 9-year-old. Both themes were awesome.

The 60s and 70s really were a golden age for television theme music. I'd never noticed how jazzy the Lost in Space theme was, I was just a kid at the time, enjoying the fantasy. But so many theme tunes of that era make you want to jump up and dance. Bonanza, The Wild, Wild West (and I didn't even like westerns!) Mission Impossible, Battlestar Galactica, Space: 1999. All terrific.

I've watched this about 25 times today. I just discovered it this morning. It is absolutely amazing. I smile from ear to ear and get goose bumps hearing these wonderful Johnny Williams theme songs. Lost In Space is my all time favorite television series. The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra really brings these great theme songs alive again. Sounds totally awesome! 🤗 Added note: I just bluetooth linked my tablet to my vintage Kenwood stereo and listened to this again. Then I linked to my 7.2 channel Sony home theater system in my livingroom. Over 1000 watts with two sub woofers. These wonderful theme songs blow me away. The huge orchestra with all those instruments really sounds amazing!

Oh the pain, the pain! Loved this & what a journey back in time to my childhood!
Still amazes me to see an orchestra perform the music from a film or tv show. When one sees a film one just hears the music and doesn't generally hive any thought to how it came to be, that an orchestra on a sound stage brought the film to life.
