- On 22nd June 2019, the we celebrated the first anniversary of the Gerry Anderson Podcast by attending the Space Spectacular at the Royal Albert Hall in London. We were thrilled to see Barry Gray's iconic Thunderbirds March in the Programme.
But when the Thunderbirds theme tune was about to be played live the team couldn't quite believe what happened next...

I have known what you all know for 60+years,we were unbelievably lucky to be born at a time when we got to follow GAs career for over a decade of fantastic shows,we were spoiled for kids TV in general in the 60s,but GA was always the pinacle and we were never disappointed,what a time to be alive,and we were also living through the greatest explosion of pop music and maybe did`nt realise it then,and we still had`nt reached the 70s.If anyone has access to a time machine give me a shout.

I am 52 and it had me sobbing as well.....For those of us who remember growing up as children watching Stingray/Space 1999/ Thunderbirds/Captain Scarlet etc.......nothing comes close!
I'm 59 and grew up with Captain Scarlet, Thunderbirds, UFO and Space: 1999. Hearing any of this music takes me back to my childhood in Canada and brings back tears for my family members who are no longer with us.
When I was a district nurse, I had one patient a lovely lady with MS who had a great sense of humour. When we were hoisting her out of bed and across into her wheelchair, using the electronic ceiling hoist, she always wanted us to put this theme on full volume on the CD player, and it was an absolute blast, craziest part of our day!!
Know what, when my mum had a stair lift installed, I'd play the main theme on my bass guitar when I heard the seat move.
'I know! I'll lift the feet-end of the bed up and slide you off head first. How does that sound?'

Every time I hear this I’m taken back to being a small lad again, sitting in front of the TV in the sixties. A great piece of music. Barry Gray did excellent work.

64 year old American here...Thunderbirds and the Star Trek themes were the music of my childhood.
We didn't know it at the time but Gerry Anderson gave us all our childhoods.
September 30 1965 to December 25 1966
I forgot I had my headphones in... It wasn’t until the trumpets kicked in that I noticed my family giving me bemused smiles for suddenly shouting out “5 4 3 2 1 Thunderbirds are Go!” from my chair.
A classic piece of music that will never grow old! If only I’d been there.
Happens to me all the time, but my chair reclines, swings around, and I dissapear down a chute and in through the sunroof of my car.....a thunderbird, of course! HA!

@@LordMelbury1953 Lew cancelled most shows after one season, The Champions, Randall and Hopkirk, Department S and most of the Gerry Anderson ones, apart from Thunderbirds, which ran to two series which is a true sign of it's magnificence.
As a child the three most exciting words I could hear were "Thunderbirds are go!"
As an adult as well....those three magic words still send shivers down my spine

Why am I just now finding this? I’ve got to be the only black female who loved Thunderbirds growing up! It was mostly boys who loved the show but there were girls too! Best live rendition ever! ❤️❤️
I'm really glad to hear that. There is no reason why it shouldn't appeal to every kid, in one way or another. It's a beautifully crafted show with great storylines, characters and equipment. I'll have to ask my sister what she liked best from this time. I do recall her watching Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and other Supermarionation stuff, but I think that's because that's what was on at a certain time and we were all sat in front of the TV together back then. I think she was probably more into Top Cat, Tom & Jerry, The Banana Splits and Magic Roundabout TBH, but now you mention it I really must find out. 😎🚀

Pure optimistic show with an epic theme you never forget.
We were lucky as a child to have such shows.
The poor kids today just have dark pesimistic shows.
but for 5 minutes i felt myself a child again, glued to the screen thinking how is international rescue to solve the problem this time.
I am Black, female and a Yank and “Thunderbirds” was my favorite series as a child, so you are not alone, Crystal. I’ve been involved in the fandom for decades and even wrote much of the trivia for the Pop-Up Video version shown in the US, plus I wrote the Tracy boys bios on the “Best Of Thunderbirds” DVD. I am such a geek that I even bought a seat from TB3 from the live action film and had it flown from London to Los Angeles! I have a FB group called Calling International Rescue-you are welcome to come join us. 😁
My sister and I were fans when growing up, and seeing your icon, I am a sponge bob fan too, and I am 61.
This theme will still be featured in concerts in 100 years time..Wish they had done the pre theme "in this episode" piece of music.....brilliant...

Having a full orchestra certainly makes the tune sound absolutely spectacular - if only Gerry Anderson was alive to see it.

I was (am) a huge Thunderbirds fan when it was originally aired in the 60s. Amazing machines were a boys dream...
I remember when I first saw them in my pre-teen years. Decades later, I introduced my then 4 year old granddaughter to them.
52 years later, this composition still gives me chills.
I grew up in the 90's/early 2000's and I watched Thunderbirds, Stingray, Joe 90, and Captain Scarlet all the time. They inspired a huge, lifelong love of puppetry, and am now a puppet maker myself. Thank you Gerry, Sylvia, and all the amazing talent involved in Supermarionation for inspiring me and helping me finding my passion.

I wasn’t born when Thunderbirds came out, but thx to my dad, I got to watch the series on dvd. Loved the series and the intro will always be a reminder of my childhood!

Absolutely brilliant. This is the sort of thing that should be used to encourage younger people to dip their toes in the world of classical music. Because that's what this piece is. A classic, and one that's as timeless as the show it introduces.
I honestly believe that every child in Britain should be introduced to Thunderbirds as it shows high moral and ethical content and expresses empathy and the need to assist others without expecting any sort of reward. They live to serve and serve to save lives.
This should be the national anthem!!
The first time I ever heard of "Thunderbirds" was when the 2004 movie came out. I was 13 or 14 when it came out. My mom told me it was based off of a TV show she grew up on that had puppets in it. Never saw the movie because I wasn't sure if it was going to be good, and I'm glad I didn't. Now, in 2020, I look up the series and see what my mom meant by the puppetry of the show. This is one of the coolest forms of puppetry I've ever seen, and I wish they continued some shows like that. And the music! I'm crazy about music from shows, movies, games, etc., so this was up my alley.
If they ever decide to make another "Thunderbirds" movie, I can only hope that it revolves around all the family and have the plotline make more sense. That would be awesome.
There is a audio drama coming out and a great fanfic to read on fanfiction.net "Mending broken wings" from the 2004 movie by Littlemissbump that I highly reccomend you read.
The great CZcamsr Jill Bearup has a good analysis of what went right and what went wrong in the Thunderbirds films.
My gran's cousin played the trumpet in the original theme tune.

I was privalidged to be invited to the real commissioning of the last HMS Ark Royal and the ceremony started with a Royal Marine band being lowered from the flight deck on an aircraft lift playing the Thunderbird theme.
That would have been epic....

I think you find they do! "This generation" is a huge term so I'll just sum it up.
My gen got thunderbirds every morning at 6am. From 5 years old I was hooked. I didn't need an alarm, I was up with the sun to watch the boys save the day. Virgil and T2 made me the pilot I am today.
2015 thunderbirds are go is inspiring a whole new gen. Though it's never going to be the original it is AMAZING. The love and dedication put into it. Weta workshop can stand proudly by their sets. The homage to the original series is always there.
Thunderbirds will inspire and delight many for generations to come.

Wonderful memories! I got shivers when the audience counted down, and when the music started, me, a 67 year old retired lady, sat here with tears in my eyes, remembering the thrill of lying on the living room floor watching all these wonderful adventures. Thank you for a great performance!
As an American, I was introduced to the Thunderbirds in syndication. But the moment I saw the first Thunderbirds episode I was immediately hooked! Now I watch episodes of it on Amazon Prime.
I wish they'd done the stings after the numbers... "Five" DUUUUNNNN "Four" DUUUNNN "Three" DUUNNN "Two" DUUUNNNN "One" *drums* "Thunderbirds are go" 🎶🎶
They should have used the recording of the original countdown from the show by Peter Dynley as well.

It crossed my mind a while back just how much joy the creativity of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson brought to my childhood.They enhanced the lives and stirred the imagination of millions of kids over the years with their fantastic creations.

The first time I saw this TV show in México I was 6 years old, now I have 42 years old, and I still feeling chills in the skin. Wow!!!
You cant under emphasize how much joy Gerry Anderson, his wife and team brought to the youth of the 1960s with his TV programmes, and always in front was the genius of Barry Grays music. Why nobody asked him to do a bond theme I dont know ?, I am sure it would have been memorable.
I felt a little lump in my throat as the theme reached its triumphant conclusion. So many memories of being a 12 year old and watching this on the telly in 1965. Barry Gray had a piece of music for every situation, a brilliant man.

That was great. It brought back fond memories. It wasn't just a program with puppets. It was like watching a film every week with feature film quality and music.
The wonderful 1960s. You’d watch Thunderbirds on TV then go outside (yes outside) and re-enact all your favourite parts with your pals.
This orchestra was amazing and brought me back to being five again. I am still amazed at the warmth with which the puppets were put together to this day, as this always showed in the episodes I've seen as a young boy in the States in the '60s. Thus, the shows will still stand out years from today because of the hard work put into the production of the show from storyboarding all the way to paying attention to the smallest detail and making sure these have a consistency that few other shows have had.
Incidentally, I've also enjoyed Space: 1999, and that was also well written with a great cast.
Still one of the greatest theme tunes of all time. Still get that buzz of excitement you’d feel at the start of an episode when ever I hear it.

What can you say, simply fantastic, anyone who was a youngster in the 60's was honoured to have watched brilliantly done shows like "Thunderbirds" listening to this epic score makes the hairs on your neck stand up, utterly brilliant.

What memories this brings back watching Thunderbirds after school and am 64 now.
Although I'm an American kid from the 2000's I grew up with my Japanese dad showing me Thunderbirds and passing down his old Tracey Island to me, listening to this brought tears of joy, it's the song of my childhood this theme, I would wake up every day to it and sleep to it

As a kid, I never missed an episode of Thunderbirds are Go. Amazing what they did back then before the digital age. The sets and aircraft were just mind blowing to me! Thunderbird 2 being my favorite!! This composition just always just gave me goosebumps, and still does!! Absolutely amazing!!

Every Saturday morning, starting at 6.00am when i was growing up, Thunderbirds were Go
My mum told me this:
When I was three, we went to see my gran. When we got in, she was just about to turn off the telly to say hello to us, and the theme had just started playing. I apparently wriggled out of the hug, shot into the room with the telly and stayed there with my eyes glued to the screen for the rest of the visit.
I've been hooked ever since.
How many famous shows can you think of that start off with their own march? (excluding Dad's Army) everything about Gerry Anderson is extraordinary and always goes that little bit further. I mean a march the RAF band can play on the march. This is the definition of kudos. What a legend he made my childhood marvelous.
I never get tired of hearing the Thunderbird theme.

What a great piece of music to play at the Albert Hall well done the arranger and pleased that the Andersons were present to hear it. Used to watch it religiously in my younger days.
Being born in late 1953 I was privileged to have lived through Twizzle, Torchy, Four feather falls, Supercar, Fireball XL5 etc. all the way up to U.F.O.
Wish I could have met him and given him a hug. Brilliant man and thank you.

What an amazing piece of music. Thunderbirds will always have a special place in my heart. I could picture the swimming pool sliding open for Thunderbird 1 to launch during the strings section.

Wow so many memories . I used to play at TB1 leaning backwards on my chair and transforming ti horizontal flight bust the chair lol but still have the table some 50 years later .
