I'm blown away seeing you cover this. This album was my go to album after my wife died. You can lost in it for hours. Their lead singer sent me the original album artwork so I could get the Todbringer and Cello tattooed on my arm as part of a memorial tattoo. Too many people skip Black Metal, expecially bands who don't sing in English. It's such a shame as the skill and the work put into creating their songs is lightyears away from generic pop music. In regards to Ellende's genre, it is definitely Black, but within one of the BM sub-genres. Check out SAOR (Scottish black metal which mixes in celtic folk instruments with a lot of pipes) or Winterfylleth (English with a massive folk influence)

Holy shit you actually covered an Ellende album, personally I would rather you listened to Ellenbogengesellschaft as your introduction to them as it's a tad different and more accessible to those who might be less enthusiastic about darker works(it's also the best album cover they've had so far)

honestly i must disagree on the choice of cover, its fancy and very very well designed, austrian to its core. but not in tune with the whole idea they have been riding on for so long musically. Their self titeld takes the spot imo, then Todbringer, first ones Black Metal as can be, while Todbringer is an artistic take on the drift of that Albums runtime.

I can't tell if you've just reviewed every song there is, or if it's an insane coincidence and you've just happened to review like 50 of my favorite songs across all different genres.

I love comments like this. There's a lot of music that never gets reacted to or reviewed so I like to think I'm creating a space for some of the awesome music on the fringe.

Taking one idea and keeping it fresh throughout a 7 minute track by using variations and different instruments is the signature Ellende style. This record takes it to an extreme. I don't blame you for not noticing (I myself didn't, even with multiple listens, but I read it in a review and now can't unhear it), but this whole record is based upon one progression. The bonus track is an acoustic version of a track from the self titled LP and I think that Lukas took that one track and went: "I think I could make this into an entire album". I think the fact that this isn't easily noticed is a testament to his writing skills.

your musical ear is insane and the analysis you provide is on point. personally i love the most obscure and dark bands imaginable, stuff you would mostly call unasked for i guess. but with a BM Band as artsy and varried as Ellende, it simply works. Only other Bands in that odd end of the Genre, that you might like, would probably be Drudkh or Mgla, maybe Deathspell Omega, each in their own branch of more consumer friendly Black Metal, aka not all too raw or pure blast and violence.

Hell yes! They are second to none for me. Fell in love ever since the discovery of this very album. Such powerful and sincere emotion, unparalleled dynamic and overall brilliant writing. Easily one of my few "go to" bands. Really feels like home, i like that you mentioned it.
Fun Fact: The mastermind behind this project Lucas Gosh also does all the art for his releases. A man of many talents, you could say.
Anyways, thanks for covering this band! Love your insights.

This specific subgenre is atmospheric black metal. Yes it certainly has the extreme elements , but because of the almost distance between you and the music it's far more chill and relaxing than what you would usually expect from this type of music. It's certainly not for everyone, but it's a bit more digestable than something like a Darkthrone. You also tend to find notes of ambient music, progressive rock, folk and world music here.
There are even some that are good relaxing and sleeping aid, here are a few examples:
    1. Elderwind - The Magic of Nature
    2. White Ward - False Light
    3. Eldamar - Force fo the Ancient Land
    4. Agalloch - Pale Folklore
    5. Panopticon - Kentucky
    6. Saor - Roots (vocals are bit less harsh here, still harsh, but less shreek-ey here)

Beautiful album. I got into these guys last year with their album. I loved the emotion they had.
This album was beautiful to me. I love the variety throughout. I read that they use the same melody throughout this album, and I picked up on it here and there but definitely want to go back on it.
You made lots of good points throughout that I’ll listen for next time around! Thanks for checking this out even knowing you might not enjoy it.

Okay, so having finally finished the video (3 hrs of video takes a minute to chew through)
1.) upon rereading my initial comment, that reads as a potential criticism of your ability to review. I didn’t have high hopes that you would share my enjoyment of the album; I didn’t doubt your ability to evaluate it. I keep clicking on your videos b/c regardless of whether you find enjoyment in a thing, you pretty much always have something insightful to add, and I really appreciate how your analysis recontextualizes genres I tend to just sit back and let wash over me (vibes only), which happens a lot with blackened and/or post music.
2.) I’m glad I was wrong about you finding some enjoyment in there. Ellende is some of the most gorgeous blackened music I’ve ever heard.
3.) the instrumental in the middle gives me a real Pixies vibe, specifically “Where is my Mind”. I’m pretty sure the guitar tone was different than anywhere else on the album there. Much of the guitar tone hits me in that typical black metal cold place, but this one feels harsh in a way that a lot of their guitars don’t. Sort of a piece of hard leather cut with a dull knife vibe; there’s a ton of rough edges to it that don’t fade into the wash the way a lot of black metal guitars do.
4.) It’s interesting that you felt a lot of this in 4/4. For me, a lot of it hits as a 2-pulse I associate with 6/8. The two time signatures are easy to blur together, but it’s interesting how easy it is to feel a song in multiple time signatures, so long as they line up relatively frequently. Once you said it, I tried counting what I was hearing in 6/8 in 4, and it worked, but I kept defaulting to hearing songs as more of angry-sad waltzes.
5.) A lot of black metal is quite formulaic and thus interchangeable. It’s part of why it’s not particularly difficult for me to take the hardline on extreme right wing politics within the genre; with pretty rare exceptions, it’s not a sacrifice for me not to listen to a particular band when there are dozens of functionally identical bands out there. I like black metal; there’s a mood/vibe that it captures better than pretty much anything else, but the genre trappings can easily overwhelm any individuality that goes into it. I was never able to really explain why I kept coming back to Ellende; your highlighting the warmth of the compositions highlighted for me what it was. The band feels black metal to me, but there’s something that sets it apart from most others, sort of a human element that distinguishes it from all of the paint by numbers black metal out there. Thanks for showing me the fingerprints I was seeing on a subconscious level.

Trivium's main man Matt Heafy has a avant-garde black metal project called Ibaraki. They released an excellent album, Rashomon, last year (I included it in my top 20 albums of 2022). It's very different black metal project because he drew ideas and inspirations for the songs from Japanese folklore and many songs include also traditional Japanese instruments. And the album features also many famous metal musicians like Ihsahn (who also produced the album), Nergal from Behemoth and Gerard Way from Bullet for My Valentine and he's doing f*ing harsh vocals on one track!!! I think you'd dig that album and its ideas to combine black metal elements with more avant-gardish elements to create quite an unique sound.

    • @CriticalReactions
      @CriticalReactions  Před rokem +1

I checked out 1 Ikaraki track because it featured Gerard and I was blown away. I knew he had harshes but not like that lol. I never dug into the album more though since the music bounced off of me a bit. I should give it a try though.

    • @juhosuomi2551

@@CriticalReactions Yes, Gerard Way featured track called Ronin and although it's Ibaraki's most reacted track on CZcams and it has most listens on Spotify, I think it differs little bit from the rest of the album. I'd describe it radio friendly track because it has quite much clean vocals and less black metal and progressive elements than rest of the album. My favorite tracks are Kagutsuchi, Ibaraki-Doji and Jigoku Dayu. And by the way drumming on that album is really, really good. I think it's Trivium's drummer Alex Bent doing all the work on that area.

"Warmth is not something I associate with black metal" - there's a massive Greek scene that has much warmer sound, greater bass presence, and lots of traditional heavy metal influences. The super weird thing is the subject never came up and that nobody requested ANYTHING from that scene yet.

About lyrics, are you certain the message is what the singer really thinks or is he just airing out his negative stormy thoughts that he knows are wrong in his brain but emotions keep pushing them up from time to time? Personally, I am a kind (maybe too kind for my own good) who wants the best for my fellow man but I also combat with misanthropic feelings from time to time whenever I see what what is happening around the world. I know this isn't the whole story but holy shit wouldn't a little meteorite bombartment do a little good to kick us in the ass sometimes or so I feel like... 😅 But I digress, of course it is up to the listener to decide how he takes the lyrics.

For sure it's a possibility. I'll always defend art's ability (and right?) to portray and explore (within reason) the darkest elements of humanity. But regardless of that I'll still call out hyper-negative topics like this because they rub me the wrong way and I'd prefer to make sure it's understood that I don't support the topics. It's not necessary since I'm not condoning them but I'm always in favor of not leaving things like this about me open to interpretation.
