    The point of the lyrics

      this is more of the direct point of the lyrics but i also thought he was talking about the healing aspect that comedy can have in times of despair. as in, when you’re in a situation where it’s already bad and you can’t really do anything, a joke can make you feel better momentarily. i mean Bo has always talked about comedy possibly being a healing force.

    Bo is mocking two very similar things: comedians who have an intensely inflated sense of the importance of their comedy... And white people who make social causes all about their personal aggrandizement. Hence why he puts himself as the middle of a venn diagram of Malcolm X and Weird Al.

    The “full of smoke” line is mostly him making fun of the uselessness of comedy in actually stressful events. However it makes the ending of “goodbye” much more hopeful when you get to it. I don’t wanna spoil it but I think Bo finds the value of comedy by the end rather than hating himself for performing it.

    • @HarleysCompass
      @HarleysCompass Před 2 lety +11

      This was the comment I was going to make XD But yea, that's exactly what I took away from this part, especially as he ends it with a kind of answer too, where he says "oh shit, should I be joking at a time like this?" cause like in both examples of "call me and I'll tell you a joke" are very serious issues and how if you heard someone joking about it as the issue is happening or right after it would seem really callous.

  • @pigeondance687
    @pigeondance687 Před 2 lety +90

    i think he's sincere in his insecurity about whether this helps anyone and whether he should even make jokes when the world is going to hell. like in the "if your house is full of smoke call me and I'll tell you a joke" lyric, obviously a joke won't help in this situation. i love bo, he blends sarcasm/irony and sincerity so well.

  • @MrSquare
    @MrSquare Před 2 lety +150

    I think you got it spot on; the first half with the whiteboard and everything was definitely very satirical; poking fun at other entertainers and himself for having white savior complex and THINK they're a huge advocate for change, despite not really doing all that much to help the problems they talk about. But I feel like the second half (from 'don't panic, call me up ill tell you a joke') is the serious turn, it's him genuinely questioning if what he's doing is going to help anyone at all.
    He says later in the special "I feel like if I'm self-aware that I'm being a douchebag, then it makes me less of a douchebag for some reason. That's not true; self-awareness does not absolve anyone of anything" That's exactly what he's doing in the first half of this song, and is questioning it himself during the second half, because as satirical and self-aware as he can try to be, he is STILL DOING IT; still trying to address complicated, horrifying social topics through comedy and hope it does something.

  • @ira__s
    @ira__s Před 2 lety +27

    I took the "don't worry, call me up and I'll tell you a joke" part as how useless he feels/ is when there is immediate danger or need for help. Like calling him and him telling a joke won't help the person at all but that is what Bo does, comedy.

  • @ISavant
    @ISavant Před 2 lety +18

    he's basically talking about how his comedy, or all comedy, doesn't *materially* improve the world. You can easily argue that making people laugh absolutely makes the world a better place, but on its own, comedy doesn't solve problems, and in particular (as you can tell from his whiteboard) he's taking shots at some other comedians who think their comedy really is changing the world. like joe rogan.

  • @MelodyYoung
    @MelodyYoung Před 2 lety +22

    I think there are two main points he's tryign to make with this song
    The first one is that he's poking fun at the "White Savior" complex. He's pointing out how absurd it is that a bunch of privelleged white people take important issues and make them about themselves and wind up usually casuing more problems or doing literally nothing.
    The other side is him having a more serious introspective conversation about the value of comedy itself. He's asking if comedy really makes a difference. We can all say it does, but at the end of the day Bo Burnham releasing a comedy special isn't going to cure covid, bring world peace, or make Jeffery Bezos turn a new leaf. So I think as an artist he's struggling to grasp the true value of art, and not this sort of pipedream ideal of art that we all have grown up on where art is some magical force that will solve everyone's problems.

    the significance of the lyrics is what he's talking about at the beginning. he's doing a comedy special even though it obviously isn't going to solve the problems of the world. you're burning to death...? uhhhhh lemme tell you a joke. he's frustrated and having self doubt about his own worth.

  • @svetlanagrabar1364

    I feel like he’s expressing the thoughts he had before he decided to make this special. His feeling of helplessness, like how does this even help people? I personally think the special helps people emotionally (both because it’s relatable and funny) but he’s right that a joke isn’t going to fix a burning house or racism or violence.

  • @bigsky1721

    "If you wake up in a house that's full of smoke, don't panic, call me and I'll tell you a joke"
    Highly reminds me of that comic of the dog sitting in a room that is on fire with the caption "This is fine".
    I think the idea is that if you notice something is wrong, if you're getting the warning signs, don't just ignore them and go watch something to distract yourself, either a) contact the people that can ACTUALLY help (why call Bo when you can call firefighters) and also b) Get up and DO SOMETHING. You can get out of your house, you can look for what is causing the smoke, you might be able to put it out! Don't just ignore it until it's too late!

  • @ivanbarilar8768
    @ivanbarilar8768 Před 2 lety +4

    "making a literal difference metaphorically" - as in, doing no difference whatsoever.
    "house full of smoke, call me and i'll tell you a joke" - again, not helping at all.
    "stop to be funny, give away his money, NO!" - doing something and actually be helpful.
    That's what the song is about. Actually doing something takes sacrifice and effort and mostly people who want to help want to help in a way that does not inconvenience themselves. Unfortunately that usually will not cut it to make any real difference.

    Sincerely enjoy it when you talk about the technical aspects of the scene (lighting, ect). As another commenter suggests, the talking in between parts add a lot of context to the musical material and you may miss the overall message of the special if you choose to skip them. I'm totally up for seeing reactions to those parts of the special (there aren't a lot of reactions to them on youtube) but whether or not you want to make those videos is up to you! I'm satisfied either way, but you should definitely at least watch the more serious talking parts off screen since they do tie into the musical numbers. Also, there are several skits, I'd be super interested in seeing some reactions to those (there aren't any on CZcams to my knowlege). Again, up to you!

I love hearing the perspective and observations of others, and I greatly appreciate your contributions thus far ... perceptive and mindful.
    The one main point that I don't think you mentioned is the jab at comedians in general -- that they have the audacity to believe that their voice is the one that matters and that everyone should listen, especially when pertaining to topics where they have little knowledge or experience. Add onto that the white savior complex and, well .... Bo realizes he too is "guilty" of that mindset but acknowledges it and calls himself out on it. And not to give anything away, but he himself states later that self-awareness doesn't absolve anybody from anything.
    Great work, and congrats on the success of your new channel!

    My take on the song is that this is what was going through his mind when he first started putting the special together. He must have had a lot of doubt about doing it at all, like as if doing a comedy special can help during a pandemic.
    I like the fact that you’re looking at the lighting and production - this is a big thing that people look over. When you realise he only has one camera and the live bits actually can’t be a continuous shot because he has to keep stopping and moving the camera ;) The use of lighting and equipment is so creative and often contains a lot of thought throughout the special.

    Guy's being glib the entire song. Others said it in these comments, but hes mocking the idea that making a comedy special will actually further any social goal besides giving him the attention and love and contact he craves. He's mocking comedians (and himself) for thinking of themselves as moral philosophers instead of disposable entertainment. No joke is gonna save you from a house fire. At the end of the day the only person this comedy special is truly, at its core meant to save is the comedian himself. But he's gonna do it anyway, for himself.

The whole verse of the song turns into a jovial beat and starts to go into the more ridiculous with all the pencils and the backing voice saying "very cool" "way to go" kinda sarcastically and that whole verse starts with "im a special kind of white guy". I think hes pointing out the fact that we need to drop this and start having a laugh and heal the world through comedy. Comedy being one of the things that can reach people from all parts of the world, another being music which is the way he chose to convey this message. I may be totally of with this interpretation but he seems to play into the the fact that he is white a lot and I think that is the point

    You focus so much on the shots that you miss the meaning of the words.

      You have to pause it very frequently to avoid the Content ID system triggering and I'd rather not. 😕

    I know this is a reaction video but I think people just want to see you laugh or whatever because you pause and talk at the worst times. Talk at the end and if you pause, go back 10 seconds because you missed a lot of jokes.
