  • I was going to rant, but it turned out more PSA :). TLDW; GE Smart Switches don't last, I have a stack of them that have broken in the last 4.5 years.

His findings are spot on. I have 10 bad switches in a box for ceremonial burning. I was replacing the bad ones with new Jasco switches, but not surprisingly, they are failing too. AND ... the switches are always a tight fit, so its no easy task replacing them. I'm done.

Interesting. In 5 years I have had 12 GE / Jasco switches fail, nearly all of them a switch (1452's.) The Dimmers seem to be better but as you said, they are crap, and they continued selling them knowing they are crap which is bad in its self. The Enbrighten ones are meant to be much better, but...

I have had several Zooz switches for a couple of years and they are reliable high-quality switches.

I've been really pleased with them. Love that the new ones let me set the status light color to something other than blue. Blue is fine for most places, but that's not what I want everywhere.

I tried cync devices. And they were an awful experience

I currently have 22 of these switches installed. Mostly installed in 2017. I've replaced 5 so far. I often wonder if the switches simply need some type of advanced reset. On several occasions the dimmer switches would work but only up to about 90% brightness. Then they would pulse. In another case, when the switch was activated it would make a clicking sound as if it was an electronic flasher. I'm going to stick with them for now, unless the mean time between failures increase.

I have the same issues. Been through a dozen switches over the last 4 years or so.

That’s unfortunate. I’ve had some Insteon switches fail, but have a few that I’ve used since 2006. Too bad they didn’t make them anymore.

I hope you did not trash these, since these are fairly easy to fix

I am experiencing the same issue with my GE switches. One by one they are failing throughout the house. I would also recommend everyone to stay away from these switches.

Those are the second gen switches that fail from the slightest electrical surge. Jasco will warranty them for 5 years. I've bought all of mine from Amazon and ebay.

The Homeseer switches HS-WS100+ have the same problem. I replaced my GE switches with those, and they also fail due to capacitor failure, a 20 cent part, but it is difficult to service. Terrible design in both cases. You can find more details here: czcams.com/video/MsDTi53qq4Q/video.html. I am going with the Zooz switches now. Hopefully they don't have the same weak link.

I have the same problems. I've been repairing mine as they break the same way shown in the video you posted. I think I have 20 switches or so and 2 or 3 fail every year. They seem to fail when power outages occur. I'm holding out as long as I can until its clear what new standard is best. It appears Zigbee or Matter will be the way to go. The only thing I can report is I have not had to repair the same switch twice.

These are made by JASCO. Why not tell us that? Do you have a lot of power outages? Your failure rate is several time my own.

I didn't mention that they are made by JASCO because it doesn't matter that much. They are marketed and sold under the GE brand.
We have very clean power here (Northshore suburbs of Chicago), with very few outages. If it was a universal issue with the environment, I would expect to have high failure rates with the other types of switches that I have installed as well, but that hasn't been the case. It's possible that my failure rate is higher because I have more switches installed. Pretty much every switch in the house was swapped, and we have a lot of switches in the house (e.g. kitchen has 5, living room has 3, master has 4, etc.).

The Jasco switches last longer than GE. I bought my house in Oct 2015, converted it to a smart home Dec 2015 and by today Jan 2024, I've had to replace almost half of the 30 switches or they're still inoperable. A couple of the new ones (Not all GE brand) went bad immediately at install. I don't regret the smart home but me being a newbie in my 3258 sq ft mistakenly replaced nearly every switch with a Zwave. Back in 2015, switches were avg $30 - $50 depending on brand and functionality. Now today, these specific switches are hard to find.
