its really cool that he openly says that the expensive one is not as good as you think and why.
Exactly. I feel like I can always trust him
It’s breakfast: no way am I deep frying
@@hellfish2309 that's a different thing and calling it not better or equal to the first one is different. I think the only problem with the second one is the cavier which do have a very distinct taste.
💯 agree!! Kudos Josh!!
Agreed. I love his honesty.
The 450$ sandwich looks like it has a bunch of incredible ingredients, but combined together, it creates a mix of things that just don't sound appetizing together
YH fish and pork no thanks
Like most of luxury meals you see in the internet: just expensive stuff thrown at a dish, with some edible gold for extra bs
I honestly think it would have been better with something other than the caviar on top, it needed a bitter note of some kind I think to balance out the rest of the flavors we're seeing there.
@@lachlantaylor1225 caviar tastes mostly salty, so it can go with so many things
@@timnewton1073 But if he didn't add the caviar he couldn't clickbait "$450 breakfast sandwich" and would have to admit that his idea for the expensive breakfast sandwich is only like $40. Which is doubly ironic because he specifically said he wasn't just going to just add caviar and call it good.
And yes, I know he also used pork secreto which is expensive, but he fried it meaning a pork chop would be just as good in the recipe. Just like how you don't get points for gold leaf in these kind of videos, using an expensive ingredient that doesn't add anything gives you no points.
Tbh, I think the caviar is what pushed the 450$ sandwich over the edge. Before that the foam and scrambled eggs would act as sauces for a chicken fried pork sandwich, which sounds amazing
@123 Tech swordfish eggs
@123 Tech Roe is fish eggs. Caviar is to roe what champagne is to prosecco.
It's fish
Eggs
@Repent and believe in Jesus Christ go fuck yourself
why do you call fried pork, chicken fried pork? that dont make no sense and i got confused as well cuz i thought he was making a chicken sandwich
The caviar seemed to be an afterthought IMO. While every other ingredient is just an elevated ingredient common in a breakfast sandwich, I've never heard of fish roe being common on a breakfast sandwich.
What are these cringe hate comments? It's caviar. Put it on anything you're trying to make expensive. It's a salty ingredient ffs.
@@bobbyman2456 why so mad?
@@the_spotted_quacker who mad? u?
@@bobbyman2456 ahaha why are YOU so mad? your comments kinda weird and salty

1:27 undisclosed tip: note how he props them up so steam isn’t trapped and soggs out the bottom side. Very important in anything you want to pressure crispiness on
Good eye my dude, I didn't even think about that
Solid tip!
I caught that too.
My wife is very particular about her bread staying crispy and not getting soggy, when I do any cooking that requires toasting/frying bread.
I usually use a wire rack to achieve the effect, but this would definitely work too.
thank you for this!
I think it's safe to say that most people don't like caviar, but the classic one looks like it would sell out immediately!
Wait... There are people who don't like caviar? Heehee ;)
most people probably haven't even tried caviar, me included
Yeah I wish “expensive meal” videos would stop using caviar, it’s an overrated ingredient that mostly exists to inflate the price. I’m sure there are people who like it, but even they use it as a tiny embellishment on most dishes. Self proclaimed expensive dishes often dump a bucketload of caviar and gold leaf and other useless ingredients just to raise the ticket price.
@@ckannan90 I don't get that either. Caviar is insanely good and in small quantities really compliments the dish but it's definitely a bit of an acquired taste, like olives or blue cheese.
It's more accurate to say that most people have never developed the palate to appreciate caviar because they've only tried it once or twice, or never in their life because it's too expensive. Even very rich people aren't going to pay a lot of money for something that tastes bad, so it must be delicious to anyone who's used to it.
I love when you do these over the top expensive versions, I like learning about high end, expensive ingredients. Never knew about Iberico pork until now
I appreciate your honesty here last few of your videos I've thought exactly what you said here sometimes simple is just better
I like how he shows the steps and exact ingredients for the 450$ sanwich like we would do it
I mean, he might as well
Rather, could inspire to make an upscale breakfast sandwich. Nothing too crazy but maybe a little somethin' somethin'
I think the whole point of these comparison videos are to show viewers that more money spent doesn't necessarily mean better food.
I mean, the technique used in the video with good but normal ingredients would be much cheaper and an experience 🤔
@@MrJruhl1 Yes, that's my thought exactly. Make the expensive version with mid-grade ingredients. Instead of making a gruyere foam, try a good smoked gouda mornay, or something to that effect. Instead of chicken-fried Iberico jowl, just use some regular thick-cut bacon that's been chicken-fried. Instead of adding caviar-caviar, try some pickled/soaked mustard seed with classic egg seasonings. The soft scramble is a necessity, in my mind.
Even though the $$$$ sandwich was a disappointment, the culinary knowledge gained was priceless. Regular Joe's, like me, salute you brother.
Yes! I feel like I learn at least 1 thing from each of his videos. He is kitchen royalty. 🙂
@@SoShantel Every video contain pearls of culinary wisdom....
@@evanking920 So true. 😊
I definitely want to try that cheese foam technique!
what knowledge? that to make something expensive u mash something already good with caviar and truffles and call it "expensive" thats like those phones that call themselves the most expensive phones but are really just an android with a diamond case.
i love the honesty
Totally agree! It is about the right texture and right flavor 😀
Please keep doing the cheap vs expensive videos that are amazing
Favorite series 🙏🏽
I disagree. Setting a pile of money on fire is frustrating to watch.
Hop on over to Mythical Kitchen. They've been doing it for years..
@@Quixan gotta spend money to make money
I do get that side of it the caviar is a little over the top in my opinion
in an effort to conserve resources, joshua has invented the reverse function on the plastic wrap box. good job josh, good job.
I never would have thought to do that! Great thinking indeed.
This soft scramble completely elevated my breakfast game. Your techniques for even simple foods are seriously invaluable, thanks Joshua!
It’s Gordon Ramsay’s technique
i just want to say that I like watching you cook and teaching us things.
Josh should make a new segment called “But way too expensive”, I’d watch
More like unnecessarily expensive
problem is
that takes away the profit he gets from the videos meaning his staff might get less money and not be able to be paid as well
thats all of his videos
@@boringsoaring7845 he makes thousands of dollars a month alone on these videos, I think he's good for making but expensive every few months. Lol
@@carebear91 it takes a lot of money to fund staff, I get yeah he gets a lot of money but his employees might not get that much money (the probably get a decent amount but most businesses don't pay employees very well)
7:30 I absolutely agree Joshua. The cheaper sandwich simply has the best and original flavors while the expensive sandwich has some weird flavor combinations like the caviar and foam which (in my opinion) don’t really go well in a sandwich
Papa!!!! Can we please get a summertime classic video, something that would be great on these extremely hot days and cool you down. Watched almost all of your videos and tried out at least 10+ recipes and never been disappointed! I literally watch the new videos in bed before I go to sleep they’re entertaining and fun! Much love Papa
Today I made the "cheap" recipe and I loved it. But I used sausages instead of bacon. It really tastes amazing. Simple but effective. Thank you 💖
I know toasting your bread is super important and a key step in a lot of good sandwiches, but for the $450 one I would have kept it untoasted considering you already have two crispy/crunchy textures in the pork and bacon. Especially considering the choice of sourdough, and it having a firmer texture already vs other choices.
My thoughts exactly. Sourdough turns very dry and into a sharp blade when toasted; just heating it on a butter-free pan is the best way to prepare it for a sandwich 🤤 I think the expensive sandwich would have been very delicious with non-dry bread and without caviar, as it doesn’t make sense
It gets wet and nasty without the nice toast.
@@ilikewaffles3689 As long as you're eating it immediately it shouldn't be getting soggy that quickly. Especially with sourdough.
@@ilikewaffles3689 idk, I make a lot of sandwiches and never got anything soggy
Papa should sell his aprons again!
Ummm yes pls!
Thank you for actually cooking both sandwiches. The small one is me all day times probably four. I love those with fresh ryebread toasted. Your extra special sandwich, I have to admit other than the caviar and the creamed eggs, that's money. I don't eat caviar and I like the standard folded omelet on my sandwich (like your first sandwich) but wow, when you toasted that special bread in the pan full of butter I pretty much died. That kind of premium bread pan toasted in butter is a pure delight and making anything with it, makes it on a complete other level. Great video. That fried pork fillet looking incredible. damn, I'm hungry....lol
The commentary, editing, and shots were amazing
Yeah, the expensive one is just too rich. Heart attack in sandwich form. Some fresh avocado or greens or something to offset the fried fats I think would be a good thing.
Ah yes, half a months rent on two slices
*truly a fiscally responsible meal*
Tbh these videos are getting more and more unattractive to me. This channel isn't what it used to be.
Indeed. 🧐
If you have enough money to spend on, and make, this type of breakfast then I don't think this would cost you "half a month's rent"....
the most appealing thing out of this whole vid was the cheap toast. that looked so perfect
honestly the 450$ one doesn’t look as delicious as the other one, even though the ingredients are amazing
Honestly, maybe just a simpler version would be better. Don't fry the pork, pan fry it and wrap it in the best omelette you can, a little cheese on each side, and slap that in between two pieces of good toast, best possible mayo optional.
Id rather eat it separately. the pork on its own, some toast, the soft scrambled eggs and that cheese foam on the side for dipping of smth and maybe topping with caviar every few bites
that's just cap lol. the foam looked weird sure but nah that looked delicious. It's not meant to be healthy.
No way. I may the be odd one out here, but I preferred the $450 one. I've had the other one and variations of it too many times and wouldn't think much of it even though it's tasty. I'd want something different and complex with delicious components like the $450 one.
@@manettetheregenerator3417 Yeah you are the odd one out. 450 one is way too expensive for the product. Its just a sandwich with many expensive ingredients mushed inside of it.
Hi Josh. Relatively new fan here (I subscribed a month or two ago) and I’m very happy that I discovered your channel. My friend introduced me to you and I’m really glad that she did because your content is amazing. The first video of yours that I ever watched was the Korean Fried Chicken vs. American Fried Chicken video and I was hooked ever since. I love the But Better and But Cheaper series and music. Keep doing what you’re doing and being awesome.
Most wholesome thing I’ve read all week
You're a good egg Abby, don't ever let the internet corrupt you.
The double griddled bread on the $2 sandwich…flavor, texture, and structure. Always love watching you do the basics…a reminder that technique matters.
Great video! And there was only one way to find out it's hard to beat a classic
first off, love this video.
Idea for the future, could you do a middley one as well, like $5, $25-50, and then $300 +or smth?
Joshua flew too close to the sun with this one and created his very own Eggs Woodhouse. Personal preference is the simple one. The fancy one, as delicious as it may be, is entirely too fancy for my palate.
Looks Amazinggg!!!
its crazy how ur cooking channel be the only thing that i be looking forward to
Just tried the cheap version for an evening snack. The mayo is a bit too much, but god the egg cooking trick is 10/10.
Amazing video as always Joshua, and thanks for the honesty about the 450$ version.
Cheers from Bordeaux, France !
I was hoping to see the team try the sandwiches!
I love that you referenced Gordon,, was wondering if you would when I saw the technique! :D
Please never stop what you’re doing. Your art is a thing of beauty
I’m Spanish and is the first time that I see a secreto as a bacon… looks great
I’ve been a professional cook for over 30 years. I recently made our 19 yo waitress a breakfast sandwich and she said it was the best she ever had in her life. Made my day! It was just a simple sandwich perfectly prepared
Took some time off this channel for a while and returned yesterday and boy I am SO GLAD to see that we are not throwing food around anymore👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
This is Art!
Perfect timing, I was just about to make breakfast.
"Eggs are not that expensive" me in 2023 are you sure about that

Hi joshua, could u please do a vid about how to organise food and how u keeping ur ingredients fresh
Just in time for Father’s Day!! Thanks Josh!
THIS LOOKS SO GOOD!
I had made a breakfast sandwich for myself then sat down to eat, and behold he had the exact video for me to eat to!
literally same
Okay, the way that the caviar mixed with the soft scramble in the cross-section is genuinely enviable.
Just made myself 3 of the cheap sandwitch - It's just GREAT !
Honestly if I liked eggs I would choose the two dollar one. The more expensive option did not sound good like a good combination to me.
The good thing about this "crazy expensive" Videos is, although you never cook the 450$ Insanity, you can always take away one or two fancy Ideas. Im trying this Cheese foam next, just not with caviar ;-)
Every single video I've seen from this channel makes me want to become a cook more
I'd love to see a video of what YOU actually eat a day! ❤️
Soft-scramble eggs always look so vile to me. The cheaper breakfast sandwich, even with the mayo, looks so much better than the expensive one.
I think i would actually throw up if i tried to eat that lol, it should be called egg soup instead
I agree. I don’t like liquid looking eggs. That would mess up my stomach
I could see doing the bougie soft scrambled eggs and upgrading the bread somewhat to make a better sandwich that does not have to be the $400 one. I have yet to try the soft-scramble technique, but I am very intrigued!!
LOL having watched Guga Foods, I feel I'm cultured enough to say that they way Josh says "Iberico" makes me chuckle. Great video! Keep it up!
Hey I love your videos! Been watching for a while now. Im going to have to go back into the office so my days of making fresh meals whenever I feel like it are coming to an end. I would love it if you could make a series with frozen meals, like frozen breakfast sandwiches I could just nuke or make ahead things like frozen croissants that I can take out of the freezer, proof and then bake: minimal involvement make ahead things, maybe you can call the series "But Faster" or something.
You are my favorite yputuber Joshua! You see Im a 12 year old who desires to grow up and become a cook. Youre my idol (but not the reason i wanna be a chef). And Ive noticed your channel is growing incredibly fast, so i decided to congratulate you on how fast your channel is growing! Ive been supporting you since you have 60k subs. Have a nice day josh
ok so this man had litteraly made hundreds of videos... but everytime i go get food 1 or 2 days later he comes out with a video to make it cheaper... and this has happend 7x already I just got a breakfast sandwhich this morning and i go on youtube and here he is posting a video. lol
thank you for helping me upgrade my breakfast sando Josh
Please keep doing the cheap vs expensive videos that are amazing. Please keep doing the cheap vs expensive videos that are amazing.
I always make the second sandwich on the weekends! Except that I can't afford beef so I replace it with a fried breaded tomato slice... caviar is a no go - instead I suck on a piece of frozen salmon skin in-between bites. The second one is great! 👌😘
weirdo
“Eggs aren’t that expensive”
This didn’t aged well
good video! love❤
People have been asking for this series for ages! Lol
The expensive one didn't even look good to me. The chicken fried pork looked good, but everything else not so much.
The bacon looks alright, too, but it seems like a really bad idea both financially and health-wise to eat both in the same meal.
A simple pork roll, egg, and cheese sandwich is all I need! Maybe two of them..
That pan toast looks so perfect, I wish I knew the right ratio of heat to not get it soggy and also not burn the butter.
Summer is comming could you make a video about making fresh coconut ice cream but it needs to be served in the shell 🙏🏽🙏🏽
So I've heard you shouldn't salt your eggs before cooking but I've also heard that it is fine too. Is it a matter of preference or does it actually affect the eggs in some way?
It's just a matter of preference, it definitely doesn't affect the eggs
Time to ask Adam Ragusea for a video about this.
It really depends on the kind of curds you’re trying to form in the cook: if you’re making omelette scramble like in Josh’s first sandwich it won’t really matter when you salt unless you’re adding a lot; if you’re making that custardy european scramble like in Josh’s second sandwich then you want the salt after so that the proteins don’t wrench out water (notice he doesn’t salt this one until after the cook is done and cooled off with creme fraiche)
Depending on the quality of your eggs, they may turn a bit more pale or even greyish. If you salt the eggs more then 10 minutes before, it also might affect the way the curds form. Adam Ragusea had a video about that. It will still taste delicious though.
@@hiimapop7755 Why I season my fork, not my eggs.
why caviar tho, just remove that half the price and make the samdwich good
Caviar is one of those pointless things people do....the only reason people eat it is to say they've ate it. For me it just acts as an indicator of your genuine iQ level 😂
I’d love to see one of these for a super high brow osso buco vs. a cheaper option (ox tail? regular beef shank?)
Hey Josh, looking for a good countertop induction cooker like the one used in the video. Any recommendations?
joshua doesnt jiggle jiggle, he folds 😈😈😈
How much would the expensive sandwich cost without the caviar?
A can of Platinum Osetra caviar is about $85 it looks like
Not much. The pork is probably around $400.
His exact preparation? About $70-$80. A more sensible recipe that's the same idea (so not deep frying an expensive cut that's meant to be eaten raw cured or rare/medium rare at the most) and you get it down to about $40. You could get it under $15 if you also just used normal bacon, but I'll let him have that one because it's not clearly dumb like the secreto is. Also a lot less if you make the portion more reasonably sized. He kind of hand waved away the portion size discrepancy, and while it is true that it'd be a lot more at equivalent portion sizes, the expensive sandwich is ~50% bigger than it has any right to be which makes it significantly more.
fwiw I'm also not convinced that the sandwich is actually more than $200 even as prepared. The numbers don't add up. Secreto is $40 a lb. The bacon is apparently $25. Grueyere is like $5. I don't have a good intuition for how much caviar 4 ounces of caviar is, but it has to be in that ballpark for it to actually be over $400.
Hey Joshua! Idea for series: “ kitchen utensils basic - related food” possibly working it up meat grinder, foamer etc.
Secreto is AMAZING especially where I'm from in Spain
I don’t even eat meat and this looks delicious 😭
i think the ideal breakfast sandwich cost is probably $10-$14. it gives enough room for quality bread, bacon, and cheese. hopefully the eggs and veggies are locally sourced too, as in a farmers market.
Lol no... Where I live most are $3-4 at any diner which blow the fancy crap out of the water
My daughter and I like to watch your videos Josh. She just said “why is that guy in all the cooking videos.” Lol
Watching you put seram wrap over the pan gave me the "Parents are behind me and gonna beat me for that one" type chills
I’m sure the chicken fried secreto would be really good with a country style gravy.
I'd rather settle for the normal one, rather than the expensive one 😂
This is the perfect video while eating a sandwich
me watching the gruyere foam part: wow a whipped cream canister, finally i already own one of joshies fancy gadgets
You need HP Sauce to make that bacon egg sandwich a masterpiece! ;)
Really gettin tired of youtube chefs making “most expensive” things by just throwing caviar or truffles on It
I am glad you said it was too much because thats what I thought while you where making it. The whole time I was like you could do amazing OTHER things with those ingredients but for a breakfast sandwhich I just want a normal one maybe with the expensive bacon and on a nice everything bagel but normal all the same.
Would love to see a collab with mythical kitchen. They do “fancy fast food” all the time. Which is basically this same idea but reimagined fast food items
8:16 flashback to how SpongeBob tucks in his pickles with a blanket of cheese
I've been able to get similar to your fancy eggs with a sous vide
I mean, I've always somehow find out that the more simple the dish the tastier it always is, you don't need to put fancy or expesive ingrediants in the dish, the important part is to make you feel good, because that's what food is all about ^^
I can't be alone in thinking what the world needs is a Most Expensive cook off between Papa Josh and Mythical Chef Josh.
also I love how he eats the sandwich w a form LOLLLLL
Nice one
