Big thank you again to Adam for the loan of this one. Definitely one of the more unusual pieces I've had in for review recently, but not without its charms. Not least of which is that dial! Cheers, Jody
The reverse band is a japanese thing.. they find it looking agressive when the end of the band sticks out and points to another person when they do a toast..
Yes, it's so that you don't see the end of the band sticking out when you hold a cocktail in your hand.
iwc have done this as well. not exclusively Japanese.
Super cool! Did not know it was because of that!
Tudor do this too. Looks neater
Because of the deployant buckle, the strap is oriented so that the closure is similar to a fold over metal clasp.
Major bonus points for the Talking Heads t-shirt 👍🏼
@Paul Wieringa Psycho Chicken.
You may ask yourself, where can I buy this?
Ah, there we have it! I was just thinking: What bloody 80s song is this "you may ask yourself -" on that shirt. How could I forget about Talking Heads.. Shame on me!
The texture on the dial is amazing!
I've actually had this one sitting in my Amazon wist list here in Japan, waiting to see if it comes down. Really like the look of it, nice to get a better view than stock photos, thanks!
Hi..
I can offer 400 USD for this watch with 1 year full international warranty.
Thanks
You can get it now for 309$.
I actually (and strangely) love the look of this watch! A HUGE departure from my love of dive style... But hey! Thanks Jody.
Like the different watches....only so many divers that I would get nowadays.....I think at some point I want a different shape, maybe even a square watch.
I would like to add a tonneau case watch to my collection in the future , i think they look really nice - i dont even mind the date window
I quite like this model. Not generally a fan of non-circular dials, but there's a certain balance with this that appeals. The dial looks a little like a well-tailored pinstriped suit, similar in some ways to the dial design philosophy on my SARK045
I really like it. I have a Cartier tank with no lume on hands or lume on Romans. No date and quartz! Paid way more. So really for this price, I’d wear it in a heart beat. Love the dial texture and color. Also the white romans and hands pop. I give it a 👍up.
Love the herringbone Jody!
As a evening watch, at the right event the later it gets the more complements you'll receive.
Pretty watch! I still have a Seiko from the early 80's (quartz) with that style of case, super comfortable, good looking.
Nice video. 1) All Seiko Presage Basic line watches have hardlex crystal. 2) All Seiko Presage Prestige line have sapphire crystal on the front as a minimum, with some of the more expensive ones also having sapphire on the back. 3) The Japanese style strap opposite to the western style strap is fitted that way because it doesn't catch on to objects as easily, but saying that I dont like it so I turned my strap around on my Seiko SARX029 the western way. Ciao
I always wear my straps Japanese style for 2 reasons, it looks cleaner from an outside appearance but more importantly the tip of the strap faces inwards and is less likely to dig into things when sat at the desk.
Just rest your arm on the desk and you'll see what I mean.
For me it just catches less.
Bought this model a year ago. been wearing it almost daily. love this watch. its perfect design and unique. highly recommended. well done Seiko.
This is a great looking watch. If its was in the 299 range would be a no brainer. I have a feeling these maybe sought after 5 to 10 years from now because of the scarcity and uniqueness
Jodi, when you flip your wrist over, the Seiko badging on the appears correct to me. If you flip the strap around, I think that will make the badging backwards. Whoops, just read the earlier comment about it being a JDM preference...
Hi Jody. Great review 👍. I always reverse the strap because it’s just so much more comfortable when working on the keyboard in the office.
Like said before the strap shows that’s a JDM watch - Japanese prefer to wear the strap this way... The case reminds me to a Seiko Laurel with silver case WatchGeek reviewed a year ago... Definitely not a low end Seiko and a very interesting model.
Pretty. Although I would only have a reason to wear this maybe once or twice a year. Which is about as often as I wear a suit. Love the shirt.
I saw one of these in a shop in California, passed on it at the time, and have been trying unsuccessfully trying to find it ever since. Thanks for showcasing it!
Love youre getting back to seiko! Maybe do a islander or a Sharkey
I like it! It reminds me of my Seiko Recraft SNKP 25 but with better specs. I don't mind the date wheel; it's color-matched if nothing else. I'm surprised it doesn't have a 6R15.
That Talking Heads T-Shirt was the star of this vid, as far as I'm concerned. Where can I get mine?
My Dog, what have I done??
Jim Davis COVID19 letting the days go by......
I know right? Could't pass it up when it popped into my FB feed as an ad.
Just One More Watch A once in a lifetime opportunity! Argh. Isolation doesn’t help my dad jokes
You might like the SRPC79J more it has a better date position and the dial pattern is a little bit more subtle due to it being white. it also has a more standard shape.
I like it, all it's oddities kind of work together well. I do wish a lot of times watches manufactures would just skip the date window.
They should have just got rid of the numeral at the 6 if there's a date window there. It would have looked a lot better. I'm with you on the strap Jody. I'd definitely be switching it around. All that is academic though... As it's just too expensive for what it is.
I am not sure if I like it or not. Kind of reminds me of 1950's style watches. Date window looks off, no surprise as the Quality Control is not as good as it used to be. Like many that have bezels don't line up exactly drives me nuts on Seiko divers. Same with the date window. Thanks for the review.
Oooh I like it 👍
Mrs Wife was giggling at your ‘tic toc tic toc hellooo!’ intro again. I’m getting worried 😂
Love the Tee shirt!
The one you found in Australia says hardlex in the description. That’s the one to get! 😉😁
Yeah, I spotted that, but pretty confident they got it wrong! For once. Cheers Mark!
Reverse strap keeps the loose retainer on since it is mostly up on that side.
So I'm not the only one who redeems airline miles and hotel points for watches? I've done it for a few, the last being a GWG-1000 Mudmaster. It's almost always a better value to use the points/miles for travel and lodging but when you want it you want it! Great review Jody! And that shirt is a hoot!!
Liked the watch . Loved the dial . Nice to have sapphire.
Not my style I am always a diver watch guy.
Very good video Jody.
If you like the herringbone patterning on the dial but aren't keen on the tonneau shape and the poorly executed date window have a look at rhe SARY099. Traditional round case shape, date at the 3 o'clock rafher than 6 (and without truncating the hour marker at that position) with the same great herringbone patterned dial.
It seems like the Omega type clasp, where the loose end of the strap is tucked inside the band, is just a better way to add a deployant clasp to a leather or rubber strap.
That approach also allows the clasp to work the same as a bracelet, but doesn't feel or look backwards.
I just had a Google on why watches use IIII instead of IV for 4 o’clock. Apparently IIII is the earliest form used by the Romans. From what I could tell, its use in watches is just ‘because they always have and everyone else uses it’. Love it.
This is a very cool looking watch. I am a fan of Seiko but only presently own one. A SKX007 with red modded dial. Will have to look into this one. I love the shape. Thanks for the review. Love your channel. Keep up the great work. Best. MJ
I guess I'm a bit of an odd ball. I like it. It's different. Definitely a dress watch I'll wear to the occasional office function
Looks really nice. Hhhhh the date window tho. No date and thinner case would elevate this one.
Because of the deployant buckle, the strap is oriented so that the closure is similar to a fold over metal clasp.
I can’t really agree with some of the other comments about the strap arrangement being a “Japanese thing”, I have Swiss watches with the same orientation to their straps. I find it much easier to work a deployment clasp with it that way. Also it seems to create less “bulk” under my wrist when resting my arm, and is easier to “feed” the watch under a cuff when the “tail” is facing me.....but then maybe I’m just weird 🤪.
I quite like it. I think it'd make a nice evening watch. Something a bit different from a round dress watch. I don't even mind the reverse strap, though it did confuse me the first time I saw it here in Japan. I thought they were done that way for display purposes. Turns out it's just how they're worn. Another top review, Jody!
@@topwomble I'd probably just wear it the way it is, since that's the intent, and see if it bothers me.😂
I recently picked up a Bulova Ambassador 96B290 (quartz) that looks almost identical to this Seiko. Same width, but only 8.5 mm thick and only 57 grams. Bulova put the date window at 3 o’clock, which only truncates the “III” slightly and works much better than Seiko’s destruction of the “VI”. Obviously, the Bulova has far superior accuracy, if that matters to somebody. The crystal is domed mineral and the dial surface is not as embellished as the Seiko, but the Bulova is more legible in various lighting conditions. Here is the kicker, I got this new for $80 on eBay. For a watch that I won’t be wearing very often, the Bulova makes much more sense for me. An interesting difference; the Bulova uses “IV” instead of “IIII” as on the Seiko. The Bulova also uses the tuning fork logo instead of “XII”. My other non-round analog watches are my Bertucci C-1T, Bulova Open-heart Automatic 96A194, Citizen AN9000-53F, Orient Arena and Seiko Recraft SNKP23.
The Seiko Sarx051 is absolutely stunning and a bigger upgrade it's a white enamel dial you should try it out and review it
Hi Jody, the strap is that way so the deployant opens on the inside of your wrist, like on a bracelet. IWC have a similar system with their pilot watches.
I do love me a good Star Trekkin' reference. Well played there, well played.
Looks like the Longines Evidenza, Humphrey Bogart's iconic watch. It's newer automatic models run around $1k USD
Looks nice. I find the flat hands a bit underwhelming, although probably faceted ones would not have a good contrast against the dial. And for a dressy piece I'd have certainly preferred if it wore like a 37mm watch.
Love the dial and the shape, not a dress watch dude, price would need to come down significantly to have any place in my overcrowded watch collection.
I quite like the date window.
Love this one, would pick it up in a heartbeat if I could find a good deal 2nd hand. Shame about that date window though...
This piece would look better with a sub-dial for the seconds rather than a big seconds hand. Also would look great with a white dial with blue numerals and hands or white numerals on a brown dial. Great Talking Heads Tee Shirt Jodie!
I get that Seiko are going for the pseudo dress watch aesthetic but can’t help thinking it would look better with applied stick indices or a 3,6,9,12 at most. This watches big appeal is the dial and Romans’ clutter the watch face somewhat. Thanks for the review Jodie, even more appreciated at the moment.
Usually I don't like Roman numerals on a dial (grandpa's clock effect), but in this case they fit the overall design. A very interesting piece. Maybe there's a bit too much going on on the dial, what with that pronounced herringbone effect, but I would wear it as a daily without any problem.
I have a similar one except the case is a little skinnier and it has this tremendous black sunburst dial and the calf leather strap is this beautiful reddish brown and and it has sword hands and it's solar so they decided to give the Roman's a little lume... wait, maybe it's not that similar. Well, I love it anyway.
@vahoush I'm not exactly sure. I know it's a solar quartz caliber v137, but on the back of the case it has extra numbers, for example, v137-0ABO R2 and a separate serial number 272942. On the dial, super small at the 6 o'clock, it has yet another number v137-0AE8 HR 4. I didn't find it on the Seiko website either so it's a mystery, I guess.
I have the Chocolate Presage and it is a wonderful watch.
Yeah, I always change strap orientation on Seiko. It looks awkward and it gets caught in pockets when walking, all the time. But that's what you get from people that drive on the left side of the road. They are all backwards, I tell'ya!
Haven’t watched yet but I needed this review. Had this in my sights for probably a year now. Looking forward to watching
Classy looking watch. I give it a 👍. Nice change of pace.
I think the stock movement has a date wheel with a diameter suited to a round face watch. The Tono's oblong shape stretches the IV just past the usual position of 6. Since other high horology brands chop numerals they pushed their luck too.
As for the watch itself, to paraphrase David Byrne "this is not my beautiful watch". I'm going to go listen to More Songs About Buildings and Food now.
They had a similar model in 2018 with a 6R15 movement. I had it on my short list but never bought it. In the end I'm a diver guy. I see one currently listed on Seiya Japan with an enameled dial and a 6r movement, a little pricey but it has a 3 o'clock date window.
Awesome T shirt...I still have the vinyl album somewhere 🙂
Great video as always Jody! I really like the case on this watch!
You're killing me. I've been feening over this model. Your review won't keep those prices down...
At one point I considered buying that model but had issues with how it might wear. Perhaps an issue with all tonneau cased watches. Love the dial and the overall look but your right about the date window (great for symmetry but kinda ruins all the dial work (like they forgot to plop one on, so that’s just what they did)). Overall a classy act. 🎩
I like that date window.
I don't usually like 3'oclock dates but it would suit this a lot better than the 6. It would be closer to the edge of the dial, so you could delete the whole 3 instead of half the 6.
Maybe you should check out the 1990s Seiko Laurel 5010, a model this is based off of useing the 4s28 movement and case made of solid sterling silver and 18kt solid gold, just saying lol
Would be a great watch without the date window, it really just ruins everything, and the numeral below it isn't even centered. There is another model with the date at the 3, SPB049J1, but no-date would suit these much better.
Totally. I hate date complications and this watch is completely up my street otherwise.
It is a casual watch not intended to be some high end dress watch. For every day use the date looks fine.
Very nice Indeed, thanks Jody!
Such an odd watch. The herring bone dial looks very interesting, but something I want to see on my watch? The strap looks good at least. Thanks for the fun Jody!
I love the dial on this and the shape of the watch. I am a sucker for this watch shape. I only own one Seiko at the moment. A Seiko SKX 007 with red modded dial that I love. I actually did a review of it recently. I really do have to delve more into the world of Seiko as they are doing great things. Thanks for the great review. MJ
Thanks for the review. This is one of my favorite looking of that line of Seiko. With the odd shape it's something I'd like to try on first. I have not had the opportunity or I probably would have bought one by now. I had a cheap Chinese watch with a similar shape that I got from my grandfather years ago. That I long since ruined. I loved it though. It's probably what got me into watches.
Beautiful dial!
love its case shape
Great vid, Jody-- interesting Seiko...
This watch isn't as popular is many other of Seiko's offerings, which pretty much means it will be sought after as a 'collectible' in about ten years.
So, if you have money to burn, buy one and sit on it. I don't so I won't... ☺
Thanks for reviewing one of the more obscure Seikos! I was considering buying one a few months ago, but ended up going for a SPB063J1 instead. Same family of slightly obscure Seiko, and I couldn't resist the £300 price tag.
Keep up the good work, sir. Nice to have some normality at the moment.
I could imagine accidentally wearing it in water and thinking, My God what ave I done?
Not Da Kine for Me, but very pretty.
Great review, Your Waffling is the best part Syd!
I personally love the white dial version
I always instinctively groan HELLLOO just after the intro, love your videos!
Thanks mate!
I agree about the strap. I'd dress it down a bit, 'cause I only wear t-shirts
The deployment clasp configuration on Seiko watches are actually much better. It makes it easier to guide the watch the the keepers.
I never understood why I like this reference, but I do. I was very close to buying one.
The main reason for the backwards strap is that when putting on and taking off the strap when it’s on a deployment it is the same mechanical motion as if the watch was on a bracelet. If it was flipped the normal way it would function in an opposite motion to a bracelet clasp. Not saying it looks the best but hey that’s one of the reasons. (May or may not work for GS)
Thanks mate. Knew there had to be some logic, but it does feels odd because I'm not used to it. Cheers.
Just One More Watch no problem. It does take some getting used to and in the end I personally just always flip it around anyway.
My Orient Star WZ0091JC has a similar reversed deployent strap on it. Interesting setup that I've gotten used to. But wish it were more traditional as one side of the strap is very short and the other much longer. Hard to switch straps on it ...
The reversed strap will have some advantages, if you wear a shirt with front pockets and you are writing in a small notebook or working on a cellphone
or even smoking lighting a cigar, the end of the strap will not catch behind
the inside of that pocket..
maybe some Japanese Ninja / Samurai thing from the past..
it sure as hell would look stupid if you are wielding a sword to a peasant,
and your watch strap would catch behind your silk kimono.
Jody, I think Seiko pulled the Laurel 4S28 out of the vault for this one. (Watch Geek reviewed one FYI) Beautiful style, harks back to an earlier era. Agree that data window is a head scratcher though. General comment: please adjust the camera angle on the Time Grapher shots. They're sometimes not too legible. Thanks for another great review.
Love the case shape, so would like Seiko to do more. The dark herring bone looks fun, but, with the thin hands and lack of anti reflective coats, it could be a bit of a a headache. The SRPD05 comes in a white herring bone, which may well be better (can see it for £329 GBP), or I’d look at the SPB049J1, which is a plain white enamel dial and a 3 o’clock date. Great video.
Great video as always! i bought mine like 3 months ago, and i came to the point where i dont wear the watch that often. to be honest i dont really like the leather strap, after weeks of wearing it still didnt fit to my (small) wrist. The whole watch feels kindof "cheap" ... super light weight and the overall quality is not something which impressed me so far. very sad because i looked for a more unique watch... i am selling mine again.
I love it. I'd gladly wear this one, but I'm a sucker for a dress watch.
Good looking dressy piece.
Nice watch, would have looked better without date aperture, (although I tend to prefer most watches without day/ dates).
Wow, that's one striking Seiko! Love it, thanks for bringing to our attention!
Actually, the Seiko sary057 reviewed on the channel quite a long time age also have an international 'Presage' version srpb71. It has basically the same spec but with a polished centre link bracelet. I personally have the srpb69, the white dial variation, I love it stays on the bracelet because I find the gap between the strap and the top of the case unbearable if straps are used.
I like the design of this watch! If it had nice lume, I would have it added to my wish list. Great video as always Jody!!!
This one is gorgeous
Nice form factor!
Suggestion for your videos in general: I think it would be nice if you compared the lume side-by-side against some well-known, good lume watch, as a sort of a "reference point". Thanks for the great content, keep it up!
This t-shirt is INCREDIBLE
I agree with it's a expensive price for that watch, the date window is not well placed or at least the "VI" is redundant, but love that strap. Great video.
I saw in many watchs they have "Sapphitek" cristals. Is that good as it's proclaim? Best regards from Argentina
Great video, as always, Jody. Would you review a few watch winders sometime?
