The Seiko Cocktail Time SRPB77 & SRPD37 Review - The Best Dial for $400

  • The draw to watches for every collector is different, for me, design, particularly the dial, is at the top of the list in terms of the aspect of a watch that draws me in. As to me, the dial helps make or break a watch on whether I am going to buy more than anything else. And as we rise the ladder of complexity in watches, the level of dial making and mastery can reach incredible levels of craftsmanship, yet you usually are always paying for it. Yet today we look at two watches from Seiko, the SRPB77 and SRPD37, falling under the cocktail time family that for around $400 are the best dials that you’ll find for the price.

Teddy, I don't usually comment. I tend to be quite a passive viewer of the content. But these macro shots are really amazing. The key, I think, is your exceptional lighting. It's so good! Thanks for these stunning shots. And good luck to you.

I've never looked into watches, nor do I regularly wear one, but after stumbling across this video I've been really fascinated at how they actually work and the designs that go with them. I've been bartending for 6 years, and after learning about this watch I figured it would be the perfect gift to myself to reflect my career. I've just purchased the SRPB43J and am in love with it. Cheers Ted!

I have now the skydiver with power reserve (ssa343j1), I originally wanted to buy the 341 (the martini) but couldn’t find it anywhere here in the UK but have to say I am very happy with my Seiko and I am never tired to look at this dial!

Thanks for taking a look at these models, Teddy. The SRPB41 (blue dial) is my favorite, and I plan on picking one up some day. As for size, it's great for my 7-1/4" wrist, but I can understand people with small wrists wanting something more the size of the SARB033. I too would love a sapphire crystal, but I know that would jack up a price a fair amount with sapphire in that same domed shape. For those really concerned, Long Island Watch sells a sapphire replacement for this line for $99, but you'd probably want a watch maker to install it. Those movements being within 10 seconds a day is nice, and really more than I even expect for the price point.

Great analysis. Seiko Cocktail line, Presage line are some of the most attractive lower priced watches out there. I just bought the green one today as a smart casual and dress watch, which is most of the time wear for me. This is my first decent watch. I am concerned about it being "hardlex" mineral crystal, but I personally would like to see for myself if I can keep this in great condition over time - and I can always replace the crystal later if need be buying a sapphire replacement for wear and a hardlex when I want to retire this piece to collection and wear at certain dress times.
I am over the moon with the price point with the sexy texture on it. Dances in the light and the leather strap colour really does compliment the face, even more so by the contrast separation the case provides between the two. This watch is well thought out and brings watches back to basics with style and grace.

I have the SRPB43 and I absolutely love it. At 40mm it's not too big or small. I'm not even a dress watch guy and I love these Pressage models. As for the hardlex crystal on Seikos I'm not sure why so many people complain. Hardlex is Seikos "in house" design material. These crystals are manufactured, designed and installed by seiko for their watches. I appreciate that and value it.

A dress watch is the only watch that is truly an all around watch. You can wear a dress watch in a casual dressed down attire, I’m talking jeans and tee shirt, and then u can wear that same dress watch in a suit for a business dinner later on that same day, and it works just fine both times... you can’t wear a robust diver or chronograph in a sleek suit.

I quite like these ones but the case size is too big for a watch that has such a large dial/small bezel. If I were to buy one, I would go for the 34mm " ladies' " version. I feel it's a much classier size for a dressy piece like this one. Many people would probably like something in between these two sizes like you said - I would really like to see Seiko offer something in "midsize".

These were released when I got sucked into watches and I kept looking at them ever since. Just today I purchased my own one (Blue Dial) before they get discontinued. Missed my chances to get a SARB017 and SARB033 new at list price back then and that won't happen again with sub $500 watches I keep looking at for months.

the problem with the presage line is that until you see them live, you cannot really understand how beautiful that dial is. The way it plays with light just doesn't translate to video.

Well said. Some thing look better in print some in person. This really is a watch you must see in person

I just bought my first proper watch a day or two before my country imposed its quarantine guidelines / lockdown. I was choosing between this Mockingbird Presage and the green Alpinist. Prior to checking thedr two out, I couldn't care less about watches. I was rocking a smart watch. But then the Alpinist's green dial caughy my attention while walking around the mall. I'm a sucker for green accessories / objects. I picked it up and have since been obsessed with watches.

Great to see some more love to the Presage line. I have the Fuyugeshiki and always thought the Presage dials are ridiculous for their price. My Fuyugeshiki has some semblance to the Iwate dials of the Grand Seikos.

I have the champagne dial version of this watch. It looks more expensive than its price. The only thing I don't like about this watch is the leather strap. I swapped that out for an after-market option.

I have a Cocktail-time SRPB43J1 (which looks like the original), and it was my first Automatic watch. Very satisfied with the buy, looks like it's worth a LOT more than $400!

I picked up a Seiko Presage “Skydiving” model at Seiko’s flagship store I’m Ginza 2 years ago. In retrospect, the green dial with brown strap “Mockingbird” is slight more my taste now, but just the same, the coloring that I bought I feel is very representative of many Japanese men in the look of watches that many of them wear. Which is to say, more simple and classic looks. I’ve found the build quality to be excellent for the price, as well as the look. The dial on mine appears almost white much of the time, but at different angles or in different light, has a much more light blue look. The one low point to the watch, although I do like its look, is the band. It isn’t the most flexible or comfortable to wear. It also clasps backward from most other watches that I’ve owned, but I think this is the style in Japan, so it makes it unique to me. Overall I’ve been very pleased with this watch through. I bought it primarily as a nice example of Japanese culture combined with my love of watches, and having bought it at the location that I did has made it even more special to me.

Amazing macro shots. Looks aside do you think the srpb71j1 is a better purchase than the srpb77 ?

i stuggled with getting one of the current cocktail time models or paying extra for the original one, the SARB065, and i'm glad i did get the SARB065. just don't like the presage font as opposed to the cursive font on the original, it looks so much cleaner for a dress watch. plus it's the original!!

I have the SRPB41 which is one of the earliest in the line, but I still believe to have the best colour. Put it on a black leather strap and it's definitely one of the most eye catching pieces in my collection

I think the sarx or sdgm models are much better buys for 1-200 dollars more ....those dress style case designs blown up to 40mm look a little chunky and clumsy...the oyster style cases at 40mm look much more natural and look much better
