How-to Install Pro-Flex Gas Lines [Propane or Natural Gas]

- The fittings on the Pro-Flex flexible gas pipe are pretty straightforward. Once you figure out how to get the length to a fitting figured out, that part should go smoothly - if you have the correct tubing cutter (make sure you get one of those as other methods will not work). The manufacturer recommends eight foot spacing of straps, but I went with two foot spacing as anything else cased drooping of the pipe and I din not want that.
I used 3/4" one hole Rigid Pipe strapping on the run along the top of the side of the bottom chord because the line needed to be right at the top with nothing protruding over the top. I'll be using boards up there to access the attic to blow-in insulation ay some point. Make sure to use rigid pipe straps as the EMT ones are too small 😊

I've got my literal blood sweat and tears going into my kitchen remodel as well. Thanks for giving me the confidence I needed to tackle this!
Thanks Joe! You can do it!
I've always been afraid to run gas lines! Glad you're testing these!
I'll be testing these lines myself, but the propane company will be testing as well when they hook-up the regulator. Should be very safe 😊
Hi Mojo, that was a great job you did up so high on the ladder at times I had my heart in my mouth, so I take my hat off to you, super job.
Thanks Larry! Soon I'll be working on the ceiling and the vertigo will be a factor. Hope that goes smoothly as well...
Heat soon! It will be nice to see that line hooked up to the heater and pumping heat!
Thanks Shed Homes! It's actually going to be hot today, but I will definitely need that heat soon!
Good video. Very helpful. Maybe spend a little less time on your layout. Price update: Jan 2024 now the cutter is $38! The good news is the affiliate link still works. A lot of time they don't and I wonder if the YT'er even knows they're no longer getting commission. Big thumbs up!
Did you bond the flex gas line
Really nice job. Noise outside was no problem it was important work that needed get done. If you ever need some side income your plumbing skills will take you far. 💪👍😊❤️
Thanks Dave! My dad did furnace install/repair when I was younger, so I guess some of that rubbed off on me 😉
Never used home or pro flex. Maybe it's better now, but when that stuff first came out nothing but problems and leaks from fittings. I would go to a customer's house because they smelled gas and sure enough it was from the pro flex. We wouldn't even repair it. We would either re do the customers entire house in trac pipe, or shut down their tank until the contractor who installed it came back to fix it. There's a reason that stuff is a lot cheaper then trac pipe! Also you have to be certified to even buy trac pipe/ counter strike where has home depot will sell it to anyone. That's how people get hurt or dead
But the job looks clean, not taking anything away from the craftsmanship, just the product
No leaks here 😊
At 16:11 it looks like you wrapped the pipe backwards. I thought you should wrap in the tightening direction to keep the tape in place.
I may very well have done that. I make that mistake a fair amount of the time. 😐
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
My pleasure!
Hi,
So, flex line can be used to do an entire area (like your doing)? Thanks
I actually used steel coming into the building and up to the rafters, then used flex to get to the heater and the location of a future heater.
Unfortunately all the Links for the Tubing and fittings are dead 😢. Where I live it's hard to find stuff like this in the hardware stores. Not sure why Amazon had no active listings? It's all plastic only for direct burial not safe for indoors.
I've added "tagged links" in the video itself. Hopefully they work!
many of those URL in your video descriptions are not working
I see that! I've added some "tagged products" in the video itself that should work.
Don’t forget to bond the gas line to your electrical system ✌🏻🇺🇸
remember... not all brands of parts are interchangeable! try to be consistent on this to avoid mix ups and possible problems.
I agree. These are all Pro-Flex parts.
This kind of gas plumbing would be illegal in New York City.
100% legal here.
Ok you got me just subbed thanks !
Welcome aboard Mike!
Just curious. Why not black black pipe all the way to the heaters?
Ease of install. The line is 12' up in the air, and it was a lot easier to run the Pro-Flex up there.
Very nice video sir, when it comes to gas installation I only (company demanded) black Iron. So, I enjoyed your video, can you tell me though, what did you use for your 90s, I went to proflex website and all I found were male, female, manifolds and tees?!?!?!?! Also, I wish I could get my apprentices to assemble parts outside like you did, would make my job so much easier.
Thanks David! For most 90's you just bend the ProFlex, but if you have a real tight spot you would need to use an iron fitting and two ProFlex adapter fittings or iron into the fitting and one ProFlex fitting out. Ideally you would jus bend the ProFlex as I did. The whole object is to use very few fittings and plan the run to have gradual bends. Hope that helps 😊
@@PlanetMojo That makes total sense, and now that I think about it, I am saying what a dumb question...LOL, I guess I am just used to fittings everywhere due to having to run the black iron!
@@dillonlexington It had me baffled at first as well. They do make tees and reducer tees though 😊
About to do the same thing, but under my house from back to front, with a middle T up for the stove, back and front propane access, and another T out to my shop. Let us know if any issues!
Also which brand did you buy?
The brand is Pro-Flex. I got it on Amazon. Here are the links from that job if you need any of them:

where do you buy them?

Nice job on the gas line bro but I got a question for you where did you get the gauge I would like to find me a gauge I don't know where there's any at can you help me out please I appreciate you Nice looking building also thank you
Thanks Joe! This one, as are almost all of them, is for a 3/4" pipe: amzn.to/3YBRAS9 if you want to connect to a 1/2" pipe you would need an adapter that can be found at any hardware store.
thanks bud
@@joeclark9042 👍😊
So I read that max psi is 5 . How can u test at 15m
Excellent
Thank you! Cheers!
Would it be recommended to run in a wall, through the attic, To out side?
You would have to check with code, but I believe you need steel pipe outside. I have steel coming into the building and up into the rafters, then switch to Pro-Flex up there. If it's run in a wall you would need nail guard plates on the studs so you don't nail into it later.
I live in the country. I am my own code inspector. Not worried about that. Just wondering if the Flex was safe to do that
@@johnpaularnett522 I don't think so. I would definitely put black pipe where it has the possibility of damage.
They sell poly pipe and kits with steel risers that all can be buried. The riser looks like a 2-3' elbow that connects to poly underground then the steel emerges at the ground so the poly isn't coming straight out of the ground.
I saw blue tape. Tape is only used on compressed air not on C3H8 or CH4. I have my gas qualification from DOB in New York City and also Medical Gas Qualification.
The tape is "Blue Monster" PTFE Thread Seal Tape. It is rated for all natural gas, methane, propane, butane, and petroleum distillates.
Not that anyone cares, but you put you thread tape on backwards
It doesn't do its job properly if you wrap it backwards. I'm really is a gas man.
@@robertc.iredale9769you are correct
Teflon tape not allowed on natural gas neither are compression fittings.
This is propane, and yellow propane tape is used on the steel fittings. The Pro-Flex lines are 100% legal, and were installed properly.
Not really! Because National code allows copper to be used for natural gas. New york city does not use national code, they have their own code ,the blue monster tape for gas is "yellow'' ; you used teflon tape. Sulphur breaks down the tape. California has the strictest plumbing code then its New York City.
No, they make a yellow version for places that require it . It is the exact same tape as the blue stuff. I did not use normal Teflon tape, you can see the Monster Tape on the table saw on this video at: czcams.com/video/nJEX0Zm317I/video.html and here it is up close: czcams.com/channels/oYEkrBhUZGqc21ahXYdwEA.htmlcommunity?lb=Ugkx0RP1yCqrxrtls8E9bpdYahZfKVu5UQZR
Interesting and expensive 1:10
Not in my 90 year old house
Why is that?
Natural gas has Sulphur that us why tape is no good. New York City has ne of the strictest plumbing codes in the U.S.,that would not fly.
It is rated for natural gas. I'm guessing they knew about Sulphur when they rated it. At any rate, it's on a propane line, and is 100% fine.
I read it but no form of tape is recommended for ''gas'' because the sulphur in the gas breaks it down. ''PRO DOPE'' is better, you have to lubricate the threads not seal them. NO PERMATEX!
Wow, you really are a piece of work Tony. You see the evidence right before your eyes and continue to deny it. Technology advances, and has apparently passed you up. Stop posting your nonsense here and find someone else to harass.
Calm down payla
Your putting your Teflon on the wrong direction always clockwise
I always forget whether its clockwise when pointing towards you or pointing away. Oh well, as long as it didn't peel-up, it will be fine.
@@PlanetMojo Yah, I noticed at 16:01 it was backwards. It probably won't be fine, you really should redo it. You don't have to remember the clock direction, just imagine you are screwing the fitting onto the pipe, and hold the Teflon straight while rotating the fitting in the direction of attaching it. If you do that it will be right.
You can also test it after, hold your fingers over the Teflon, and rotate the fitting and see if the Teflon comes off, or if it gets tighter.
@@Ariel1S It will be absolutely fine if the threads go on it. The direction of wrap is just so it doesn't unravel when you are starting. If the threads go on it, it's fine.
@@PlanetMojo I'm sorry, but this isn't true. If the threads are backwards it tends to unwrap when you tighten it, and then it leaks.
Maybe in your situation because it's very low pressure gas it can handle it, I don't know, but if you tried that with a water pipe it would leak 100% for sure.
I've made this mistake occasionally, as soon as you screw the pipe you can see the Teflon start to unwind itself from the threads rather than be firmly on the threads as the pipe goes deeper into the fitting.
@@Ariel1S I repeat, the tape did not unwind, if it doesn't unwind, it's perfectly fine - and that would be at any pressure. If it had unwound, I would have done it over. It would not have leaked with water either as the contact is exactly the same.
never use gaslines w o-rings,too easy to fail, countless times have torn this junk out,,only use trac pipe or gastite
That's how Pro-Flax gas lines are made.
@@PlanetMojo Actually from what I read the o-rings are more reliable. The metal connections of the other types are difficult to get right, they need perfect cuts and a lot more tightness to seal.
