Chelsea pre-high press era. It is fascinating to see how much the game has changed. Technically, tactically and in terms of scope and skill it has improved and evolved dramatically. Yet, there is something about the game from this earlier era that remains if anything more attractive.

Though it was a grim result for Villa, I still enjoyed watching this
upload, thanks Villa Boy! In fact, there is virtually no film footage
of Villa during the entire 60's decade so this here is invaluable.
To have viewed a lengthy piece of action is very satisfying.

Thanks for this upload. Chelsea were in tremendous form at that time. Unbeaten and top of the table after 11 games a couple of weeks later. Osgood then broke his leg away to Blackpool courtesy of Emlyn Hughes. So only a month after this match, Tony Hateley was a Chelsea player after being brought in as a replacement. He couldn't replicate his goal-scoring form at Stamford Bridge and the team dropped away in the league but he did get the winning goal in a FA Cup semi-final that season (at Villa Park) to earn a Wembley visit. Three England caps was scant reward for Bobby Tambling. 202 goals as a support striker / winger.

Maybe should have stayed at Villa, he scored more goals
and played more games compared to his other clubs.

When I first started watching Villa in 1968, I always remember Lew
Chatterley as a stalwart centre back but looking at this game, his
early years at the club saw him playing up front almost as a centre
forward. He scored 20 goals from 56 games during that time.

Didn't hear Greenaway's zigger zagger but Chelsea were nice and loud at this game, great support! Always was in those Football Special days!

A month after this game, Tony Hateley transferred to Chelsea.
This pretty much guaranteed a relegation battle for Villa having
lost such a prolific striker. He scored 86 goals in 148 matches
in his time at the club.
Time and again, quality was replaced by mediocrity during this
period. It's no wonder that Villa continued to struggle, results were consistently poor and it came as no surprise that they suffered
a humiliating relegation into the Third Division just three years later.

Great footage. Great result! How much could we do with Bobby Tambling and Ossie now! And Ian Hutchinson and Charlie Cooke and Ronnie Harris and Peter Bonetti and Tommy Baldwin and all of them in 2023! Would love to get rid of the Tottenham c#** in charge of the shower we have become!

This being the only lengthy film action of Villa during what was
a miserable decade certainly made for grim viewing if you were
a Villa fan. Even allowing for the fact that Chelsea were much more
skilful and superior in every department, this single game exemplified
the slide into mediocrity into which Villa had descended during the
mid-60's; it was painful to watch.
In truth, they were saddled with too many poor/average players for
the top flight, it's no surprise that they were relegated at the end of
this season finishing second from bottom.
They lost 8 out of the first 12 games and then 8 from the final 11,
they went down with barely any fight...more of a whimper.

Time and again from Villa....poor passing, feeble pathetic challenges,
missed tackles, very poor ball control, mistakes all over the pitch and
worst of all no method or pattern to their play.
A sure sign that a club is heading for relegation.
