      Well we can't say, but the drummer Narada Michael Walden was a very young virtuoso already in the '70s and became a producer in the late '80s &+. I read an interview where he was saying there wasn't much challenge anymore in drumming so he got into new professional spheres and cultivated new talents where he could feel himself challenged.

    My apologies for commenting twice but i have to say seeing the clip of Matteo and the other prodigy plus Rick interviewing will be a clip to see for ages!
    Matteo comes off so humble and warm hearted in the way he talks.

    From the 70’s onwards some of my guitar idols included John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola, Lee Ritenour to name a small sample. Matteo Mancuso is such a sweet tasteful player and virtuoso in ways unimaginable back then. As an old guy I marvel at the way online availability of a huge selection of videos both performance and teaching. By the way @RickBeato I love your work even if you’re sometimes a bit grumpy about new chart topping music which is loved and enjoyed by millions of non-musicians. CZcams lead me to you and I really enjoy your interviews with people I will never meet 👍❤️🎸🇦🇺

      Legato means "bound" or "tied" in italian and you can hear why.

    All that prior classical training has been used to good effect. He really combines styles well. What a great ear. And everything he plays is so tasty, even scales.

    I love that he's not into the theater of most rock or metal musicians. No goth black, ridiculous jewelry, or costume BS. Just a guy in a hoodie kicking ass.

      Gimmick can be a great tool, especially for live shows. It's an audio & visual treat. Listen to Rammstein, and then watch their live shows; it enhanced the sound.

      @@ICRA95 We don't live in the 70's and no one is nostalgic for that era unless you don't like progressive change. I love Bowie and Deep Purple. Music and dress are two separate things. Bowie left behind the Ziggy Stardust costume and just dressed unadorned in his last 20 years. Intelligence evolves, and the ridiculous looks of the 70's and 80's boomers are dead.

    Woah, love that technique. I play with my fingers as well. Currently I'm trying to compromise and develop technique to where i can use a pick but also my other 3 fingers. Part of me likes using just my fingers though

    My favorite newer generation guitar player hands down. All the other newer generation “pop-slap-crackle” guitarists are not my thing at all. So when I saw Matteo come along I said, “finally we have someone to carry on the legacy of good melody, good technique, and tasteful chops”. So glad to see him finally getting recognized for his talent

    i think everything being picked is more guitary and its just an unique sound instead of emulating sax, but legato and different rhythmic phrasing is definitely something that should be used.

      And I love how he refers to it as 'pronunciation'. I know it's partly a language/translation thing, but it's such a useful way to think about it - phrases & application of theory are the vocabulary, the physical approach is the pronunciation.

    He doesn’t play the guitar like a guitar player would. The first part sounds better to me because it’s the sound i expect from a guitar. But the 2nd one does make more sense musically because jazz reed instruments play like that. I never noticed it until he stated that here.

    This tecnique he's talking about involves slurring from the upbeat into the downbeat. That's how I play my bebop lines as a sax player. It's also impossible to articulate every single note after a certain speed.

      It's a yamaha revstar, he has a custom pick guard with the thumb rest above his low E string to help with his technique
