  • The best thing we can do for our dogs is protect them from unpleasant events. Fireworks displays can be beautiful for us but can be traumatic for dogs. It’s not just dogs; many animals are scared of fireworks, including wildlife. We can help our dogs by preparing and keeping them safe, and I’m covering strategies that you can put into place right now.
    In the episode you'll hear:
    • The alternatives to fireworks and how we can start asking for change.
    • Why not to take fireworks lightly and act now.
    • How exercising on the day there will be fireworks will help your dog.
    • Why to be at home with you during fireworks to keep them safe.
    • What to do if you have multiple dogs and some are sound sensitive.
    • The three strategies of stimulate, soothe and settle to help dogs.
    • How to time and play games to help your dog during thunder or fireworks.
    • How to use food toys, or meaty bones during noise events.
    • About soothing your dog and how settling strategies can help dogs who fear fireworks.
    • When to contact your Vet about medication to help your dog.
    • That the strategies will help you create a positive conditioned emotional response for your dog.
    • About the importance of being proactive in preparing for fireworks.

    I'm extremely fortunate that both of my dogs didn't give a flippin heck about fireworks, but I hate fireworks because of the wildlife disruption and I hate loud stuff

    I found the most important thing us to genuinely remain calm yourself they will follow your lead. I was lucky that I had a dog born in October. We are In the Uk bonfire night in November mean fireworks go on from halloween through to new year on and off it can be a lot but Now he sleeps through them. 🤭 he may glance in my direction as he snoozes but I don’t react.from the start I took him out for 5 min walk whilst fireworks were on and taught him all was fine he just walked to heal naturally but was fine. Periodically through the year and a little more often in the run up to fireworks season I play games or feed him whilst playing CZcams fireworks desensitising videos in the background. I feel for the owners with super anxious doggies. Please be as neutral emotionally as possible and this will help enormously.

    Personal fireworks tend to go off at random during the 4th of July holiday period, as well as on "the big night ." Another good reason to be proactive with your dog. I'm with you, Susan, on the need to phase them out as I am very concerned for wildlife as well. 🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪

    My dog typically looks right at me when he hears a loud noise. If I don’t react, he lays his head back down. It’s what has worked with thunder and fireworks and I try to mask the noise with ac or fan noise and tv. Not over loud but enough to take the focus off the fireworks or thunder. As he aged it has bothered him more. When younger he didn’t mind. Now he does mind.

    My poor older dog was so bad I would put her and her favorite blanket in a bathroom with a no windows so she wouldn't see the "flashes" and I played loud soothing music trying to drown out the noise. It helped except for the fireworks that shook the house.

    I feel the same about parades. I see so many dogs at parades. Loud bands, fire trucks sounding sirens etc.. Lots of noise and commotion. I have seen so many frightened dogs. It makes me sad.

    Hi Susan. I just recently found your channel and have enjoyed the content I have watched. We will be getting a new puppy in June (not sure what part of the month) and our neighborhood sounds like a warzone on the 4th of July. In fact, fireworks can start off and on a week before and into the days after. The neighbor's kids start letting off loud firecrackers late evening and fireworks start sometimes before dark and last til midnight. Do you have any suggestions other than what you mentioned in the video since our puppy will be so young? The city we live in does not allow fireworks, but no one enforces it, a lot of the ones letting them off are police officers. Thanks.

    I went from a Dalmatian that tried to attack the fireworks and loved the big show to my little dogs whom are terrified. I go drive to Walmart Parking lot and sit for a few hours until they are over. 9-12

    Cool, I never heard of DAP. I will try this. It used to require a pill to calm my dog, BUT I combined that with beef shank bones so fireworks meant the best treat EVER. Now, no pills, no bones, just a "calm place" or 2, and maybe a large treat or biscuits. It was hard to do serious treats every day, 3 or four nights a week or more. We still do it for first night and july 4, but the other days its just fine for her to chill.

    I would love to see a drone show instead of fireworks! Fireworks are so stinky and it's worse when you have neighbors that go nuts lighting them off and all the debris falls over your house and yard...no one ever helps clean it up. Dogs stay inside until we pick up all the litter the next day 😕

  • @goymedhundDogtrainingBehavior

    We had an "accident" with the car - and the dog inside. She was 12 months old then. ( now 14 months ) and got really scared. She was not very fond of the car in the first place so now we have to work a lot to make her comfortable with driving in the car again..I regret not having worked more before the accident happened in case something like this could happen. Proofing her and even make her enjoy ot :( . Would love to see a video on this. Luckily we are getting better and better each day and now she even jumps in - and out FAST..lol. but be we are getting there :) And today she actually jumped into 2 different cars.. i am so happy

    You mention separating the dogs that are afraid from the ones that are not, saying to keep the older dogs from teaching the younger ones to fear....
    But mine are opposite-- the new puppy is sound sensitive and the older ones are not.
    So they SHOULD be together, so the older ones can teach the baby not to be afraid.... is that right?

    • @RaptorsGirl
      @RaptorsGirl Před 2 lety +2

      Yes Milissa, keeping them together is a great idea as long as the young one isn’t frantic and badgering the older ones

    I accidentally got caught way closer than I thought to fireworks the other day with my puppy. And we have people who just randomly do a few fireworks because it’s a day that ends in Y. It’s Monday night and someone just did a few.

    Just 2 days ago I was walking my 6 month old puppy on one of our favorite routes which passes by a baseball stadium. It was a game night, and suddenly an unannounced, totally unexpected, ground display began only about 500 ft from our pathway. She was TERRIFIED! I tried to hold her close in to me, petting her, giving her a treat, and thought I'd hide her from them and cover her ears. Instead, she jumped crazily, clawed me hard and nearly got out of her harness. Trembling took over her whole body for at least 15 minutes. Now what do I do for her? She has been sound sensitive since I got her at 8 weeks.

  • @sophiesmith5922
    @sophiesmith5922 Před 2 lety +1

    Its so bad here, May 5 thru Labor day, every weekend. Even my dog that was not afraid was looking like where the h@#% is the gun?! Ears back, scanning for the offender...Finally got the other a little more comfortable. She has a hiding spot but no longer panics.

    If I feed my dog high value treats while playing easy games during a storm, will that give her a positive CER ? I did that today during a thunderstorm ...she was active with me and my other dog who is NOT scared of thunder for the first hour, but then she came unglued and ran into her crate. I stayed with her, but she started refusing food. Should I try this with each storm?

  • @robertak43
    @robertak43 Před 2 lety

    Excellent guidance. Good time to practice CER and using a thunder shirt leading up to 4 July. My pup is very sensitive to fireworks, thunder, and I’d like to work on desensitization since these noises can’t always be predicted.

  • @Filotej
    @Filotej Před rokem

    Will fireworks and thunder videos on CZcams while playing with your dog help? Low sound then gradually increasing sound. Get them used to it. Also during actual fireworks keep all windows closed and turn on tv loud to drown fireworks noise. Or get in car and go for a drive away from fireworks.

    I wish the fireworks only lasted 20 minutes. Here even though they are illegal they go on randomly all day and easily from 9 pm through oh 2 in the morning. every year they get louder. The 4th is a Monday there will be fireworks all weekend. And oh I feel for the humans with heart conditions or PTSD.... I will be one very unhappy human.
