If the Games can't fund themselves, why do we bother to hold them? Why do the Taxpayers have to pick up the tab for these events? Surely, if they're half as good as they tell us all, the funding would be rolling in.. but it isn't.. because no one cares..
As someone who loves watching the Commonwealth Games, I think it's a massive shame and travesty that Victoria's canned the games, especially as to my understanding that a few regional Victorian towns and cities were supposed to be hosting a few events during the games, not just Melbourne which would've been fantastic for the people of those regional areas and for the state of Victoria as a whole. Not to mention that, I agree with everyone on that panel in regards as to why the Commonwealth Games are so important to our athletes, coaching staff, on-field officials, commentators, volunteers, etc. I also think that whoever did the budgeting for the Commonwealth Games has a lot to answer for as well as the Victorian state cabinet in making such an executive decision with little to no consultation with the respective sporting bodies whatsoever. But, alas, the decision has been made, and whilst I'm hoping for another Australian city/s or commonwealth country to take on the responsibility of hosting the games, I don't think it will be likely that the games will be hosted in 2026 or anytime in the near future unfortunately.
