    What I think was really sad - after Doug Williams MVP performance, because his appearance wasn't necessarily camera friendly, he never received the commercial endorsements he so rightly deserved.

  • @joshingram071
    @joshingram071 Před rokem +20

    What gets lost in this miraculous performance from Doug Williams is that Washington also set the record for the most yards by a RB rushing. 204 yards by Timmy Smith in that game & was second for MVP votes. To this day no RB has matched that performance. Considering Otis Anderson, Emmitt Smith, & Terrell Davis all won SBMVP in the years since. No back has come close to touching that record.

    • @rodolfohilliard1656
      @rodolfohilliard1656 Před rokem

      I disagree, I think many many are aware of Smith's performance. True, QB gets so glory and such, but the way that man ran in that game.........with those big runs........lots of folks just attribute that to the passing game being so good that day.
      In the first qtr, smith had a twenty plus yard run called back. He could have had more yards.
      Now, the side of me that may agree with you is that three of those Smith runs accounted for the majority of his 204 yards.........58 yard TD, I believe a 42 yard run before the Clint Didier TD, and that first okay of the 4th qtr where he ran for 32 to put it on the eleven yard line. Add in a 19 yard run in the 2nd qtr and we have 151 yards on four plays,......so yeah, I get it......wait
      .....am I contradicting myself!? Hahaha.
      I was in 12th grade watching this game and I remember saying Smith for MVP, but yeah, William's deserved it.
      Life long Redskins/Commanders fan here.

    I'm a 49ers fan, but I've always admired the way Joe Gibbs won three Super Bowls with three DIFFERENT quarterbacks. So many dynasties result from the lucky happenstance of a great coach having a great QB who are together for many years, but none of Gibbs' QB's were HoFers. Theisman had TWO seasons with a passer rating above 90 (both of them when they went to the Super Bowl) and was 77.4 for his career. Doug Williams had ONE season with a passer rating above 90 (the year they won the SB) and was 69.4 for his career. Mark Rypien had ONE season with a passer rating above 90 (the year they won the SB) and was 78.9 for his career. It was all Gibbs, getting the most out of what he had, which wasn't much when it came to QB's.

    Wow. I’ve only known the final score of 42-10. I never knew Denver played an almost perfect 1st quarter with Doug Williams getting injured on top of that. I never watched the highlights because I figured it was like the 55-10 beat down Denver got from the 49ers.

    I was an 8 year old Black kid hoping Doug would win...partly because we had been reminded it had never been done. But mostly, MOSTLY...because I was a Raiders fan and hated John Elway lmao. By around 5:15pm, I was outside throwing the football at dusk in Fresno, California...pretending to be Doug Williams. To say this game meant a GREAT DEAL is a woeful understatement 35 years later. Doug made it plain that given the opportunity, we could not only play, but excel at the highest level. We just needed the CHANCE. For one quarter, he was the best QB of all time...and saved it for his most important game.

    and he really looked hurt. Ans recall how worried I was and feeling of gloom come over me. I had no

    Tampa not resigning Doug Williams was one of the biggest butterfly effect in NFL history. After Doug left the Bucs needed a new starting QB so they trade their first round pick in 1984 to the Bengals for Jack Thompson. Then the Bucs finish 1983 at 2-14 but instead of getting a high draft pick it went to the Bengals. The Bengals went and traded that to the Patriots, who selected Irving Fryer. Then after they signed Steve Young out of the USFL they continued to stink but they also got the first overall pick in the 1987 draft, where they took Vinny T. They subsequently traded Young to the 49ers. Then after Vinny continued to underachieve the Bucs go ahead and trade their 1992 first round pick to the Colts for Chris Chandler. The Bucs finished 1991 at 3-13 and didn't have a first rounder to show for it. As for the Colts they had the first two picks in the 1992 draft - theirs and Tampa's. After not paying Doug Williams what he was worth the team spent the rest of the 80's pissing away first round picks to replace him when all they did was get worse and worse. They re-sign Williams long term and they don't trade those two first rounders and they don't end up drafting Vinny T. or Bo Jackson and they don't end up with Steve Young or trading him to San Francisco afterwards. A bit more to it than that but that is the gist of it.
    In summation, letting Doug Williams leave affected the following teams over the next several years: Tampa, Cincinnati, New England, Indianapolis, Washington, San Francisco, and the LA Raiders. Seven teams that were immediately impacted. You can throw in the Dolphins, Eagles, Lions, and Rams, too, if you want, since Hugh Green, Jimmie Giles, and Kevin House all worked their way out of there after what they saw happen to Williams....AND.....James Wilder wouldn't have gotten ran into the ground, too....AND....Wayne Fontes might have been the successor to John McKay.

    This game when it started looked like the Broncos were gonna destroy Washington. And so strange how the game turned because these are events that typically happen in the 2nd half. Not getting the fumbled kickoff was so huge because Denver with all the momentum possibly going up 17-0 in the first quarter would have been a deathblow to Washington. But the underestimated moment was Dave Butz eating up the Elway QB draw holding the Broncos to a field goal. Possibly going up 21-0 likely means we are watching a whole different video with Elway getting his first title here.

    I have been a loyal Broncos fan growing up in Denver. I watched this game as an almost 10 year old boy. We were stuck at church until right before Elway threw that touchdown to Ricky Nattiel. Denver's defense completely betrayed that offense. Mike Shanahan had a really good game plan for Elway, but Washington's trio of receivers (Monk, Sanders and Clarke) were effortlessly getting behind Denver's defense. To counteract the deep pass, they dropped both safeties, giving up huge passing lines to Timmy Smith who continued to chew up big yards on every play. By that time Elway was having to play from behind and really he didn't look terrible in that game, but it was all on him to will his team to victory. There was no pass protection and Elway threw a lot of bad passes in that third quarter. Washington's defense had it easy in the second half, just pin their ears back and go after the quarterback. Game. Set. Match.
