- Doug Williams' story is one that should be told to everyone who will listen. 'Skin Deep' is an 11-part docu-series produced by Anthony Smith for NFL Network that does just that. The film explores Williams’ journey from his childhood struggles through segregated New Orleans. The story also stretches back to his college days playing for legendary Grambling coach Eddie Robinson...his roller coaster ride with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and, of course, his brightest football moments with the Washington Redskins.

HTTR4LIFE The left HB position is the father of the modern day QB.I watched The NFL NETWORK and they had a list of the top 10 QBs and they started out as a LEFT HALFBACK.Ppl mentioned were SAMMY BAUGH,JOHNNY UNITAS,OTTO GRAHAM.None of them were QBs when entering the NFL.

I am Mexican and was 15 years old when Doug shredded the Broncos in the Super Bowl and I was so thrilled for him. His performance brought me to tears and gave me goosebumps. I knew how Jay Shreoder had treated him. Even as a Cowboys fan I rooted for Doug. Much respect for Mr. Joe Gibbs for sticking to his principles and having Doug’s back.
Finally somebody put this up. I remember this game when I was a child. I loved Doug Williams and his performance in the Superbowl but it seems like the film just disappeared for years I couldn't find it and it was never shown on classic sports , ESPN highlights, Superbowl highlights were buried. The dominant run the skins had in the 80s always brings back great memories of my childhood. People probably don't know Doug gave back to the community when he was playing Qb in D.C. He's a class act.

My man Doug Williams I was so proud of my daughter when she was offered a track scholarship to attend Grambling State manly because of Doug Williams.
OMG that throw by Briscoe is the greatest I’ve ever seen, I can’t believe I’ve never seen it before.
He threw it 70 yards, running to his left, under pressure, dropping it perfectly into the receivers hands. Incredible, simply incredible.

Never fails to amaze me how much we forget/ don’t learn about history. People will go on about great modern players are doing things that haven’t been seen before. Maybe not seen by them, but definitely seen.

Finally, if you’re still with me, he really reminds me of Doug Flutie; who could relate as a short QB; though who didn’t share the experience of the violent ignorance of racism.

I'm not, let me reiterate, I'm not a Washington Redskins fan, but I wanted to see Doug Williams get a ring. That brother threw 5 touchdown passes in one quarter. That's unbelievable even to this day. Me being a man from African descent, I was happy to see Doug Williams hoisting The Vince Lombardi Trophy.

I watch Doug in Tampa...one great arm a great player and the legacy he left still keeps giving............Russell, Mahomes, McNair, McNabb, Kaepernick, and Hurts, all played QB in the Super Bowl and for the other that follow that haven't been there yet. Doug's style and grace stands out and his leadership. He was Superman in a football uniform.
For some odd reason they don't show Doug Williams sitting TD pass often. But if it was Dan Marino, Joe Montana or John Elway it would be known as one of the greatest TD passes EVER!

I began following Doug Williams his Senior year at Gambling, he played in the Japan Bowl and broke many records. I followed him at Tampa Bay and while in the USFL Oklahoma OUT LAWS And HIS RETURN TO The NFL Redskins. HIS VICTORY WAS OUR VICTORY SD A Black Man AND American, I THOUGHT ABOUT Jackie Robinson.

I will always consider myself blessed to watch the first Black starting QB in a Super Bowl. My family was never racist though we were from East Texas which did-and probably still does-have a lot of racism per capita. (To be fair probably some on both directions.) But racism is antithetical to *true* Christian and Biblical teaching, and so we thought it ignorant and ridiculous.
So glad a few brave men like Doug Williams stood up to the “status quo” and did it with pure *class*.

The more I think about it, I think the “intangible” that made Doug WillIams a leader was that he aspired to be a teacher/coach at the high school level. People USED to aspire to be school teachers, and there was a great deal of respect for them. Watching Williams with his students was most likely the icing on the cake for Joe Gibbs when he scouted Williams. Yeah the mechanics and intelligence were there, but there are lots of smart people who are ineffective teachers. There’s a select few that have that perfect chemistry to be effective teachers. Williams obviously had that “extra something.” Joe Gibbs saw it right away, and so did his teammates in Tampa. Years later, his Washington teammates saw it, too. That’s why Gibbs put Williams on Timmy Smith’s case before the Super Bowl. It seems so obvious now.
His performance justified his draft status in the year of '78 he was the ONLY QB TAKEN in the first round that year.
Needless to say i was glad Doug won the SB but was disappointed because i'm a lifelong Broncos fan and he lit us up plus Timmy Smith ran all over the place.

I didn't know that Doug Williams wife died. I'm so sorry for his loss. I almost cried myself because he lost his partner in life. He had to find strength to keep on going to be who he was a Great Quarterback. Attitude towards Race had changed in my mind. I never looked at him as an underdog. I never underestimated his ability to win. He destroyed the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl. His Long Passes were beautiful spiral, accurate, perfect timing with his Receivers! I grew up in a world that racism is/was frowned upon. When I hear someone use the "N" word, I check em right then and there. I tell em not to use that around me, because it's offensive to me, because I have Black friends and customers who I literally love. I tell em please use "A" hole or something else next time, but please, please don't use a racist comment towards someone. I remember Doug saying " I'm or We're Going to Disney World" after the Super Bowl Victory! My Cincinnati Bengals had running back Esesex Johnson went to Grambling and he was from Louisiana too. Charlie Joiner also went to Grambling too! I'd say there is plenty of talent in the NFL who went to Grambling.
His first wife Janice died from a brain tumor unfortunately and she left him a daughter to raise her name is Ashley and I believe she is a parent in her own right

My Dad and his family endured a lot of Hardship in Manila Philippines when the Japanese bombed and all was destroyed! He watched his friend literally get blown up! My Dad wanted to be a Pilot or design Airplanes. He was a Track and Field Star. He had 3 framed and mounted on Red Velvet Frames of Gold, Silver and Bronz Medals in his office. He won a Big Race in the Asian Olympics in the Philippines that won him a College Scholarship, where he became a Big Soccer Star. He then came to the United States after graduating and built Textile Mills across the Country before he got his Master degree in Engineering at NYC University in New York City. He was also a Great Singer and he sang in the Catskill Mountain Country Clubs like Bobby Darren did. He cut a couple of really Great Love Songs. He decided to pursue his Engineer Career and ended up in Cincinnati Ohio and literally became one of their Top Guns. He retired with 45 Patents for Jet Engines both Military and Commercial. That's where I was born. The oldest son of 3 boys. as Racism is concerned. I happen to be of Jewish decent. If anyone has read their Old Testament Bible they will know that the Hebrews were in bandage for 500 years. From my experience the most Jewish people have been able to relate to the Black Peoples Struggle for Equal Rights and Racial Equality. As for myself I worked in the Promotional Records Department for CBS Records for a couple of years in Cincinnati in the early 80's. I am friends with Ouiwey Collins (The Funk Squad) Bootsy Collins son and their former sound Engineer Allen Cann. I also have another friend who is a recording artist named Junior Mark. I had the privilege of watching in person the Great Doug Williams play twice against Tennessee State University in Nashville. He matched lasers and pinpoint passes with the legendary "Jefferson Street" Joe Gilliam. I lived in San Diego in 1986 and swelled up with pride as he endured two weeks of asine questions from reporters, death threats and a root canal surgery days before the Superbowl. Years later I met him in person at a fundraiser for the Great Jim Brown's Amer-I-Can Program. He deserves to be in the NFL Hall of Fame! Great Man and a Model of Possibility! #RealMenDontPlay
There's NO WAY you saw Doug Williams play against Tennessee State when they had Joe Gilliam at quarterback. Gilliam was already in the NFL by the time Williams enrolled at Grambling, presumably in 1974. Don't make up fanciful stories for attention. Guys like me may spot them and call you out. 🧐

I'm proud to be a white man. I liked Doug Williams, although Danny White was my favorite QB growing up. Very decent white gentleman.
Michael Wilbon said it best he beat them at their own game of throwing the football which was the first negative comment said about the Black QB.
When it comes to Super Bowl winning QB's, Doug Williams took the longest and most painful and rocky route possible. Being selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1978. Taking the Bucs who in their short history sucked to the NFC championship in just 2 seasons. Sadly he got injured and couldn't play the rest of the NFC championship game and the Bucs lost. He got blamed for that. Then after getting to the playoffs in 81 and 82 and bounced out by the Cowboys, the Bucs owner Hugh Culiverhouse didn't want to pay Doug Williams so Doug went to the USFL. The Bucs had a losing season EVERY year until 1997 when Tony Dungy led the Bucs to a wildcard win over the Lions. Doug Williams was hurt and didn't do well in the USFL and then the league folded. Was able to sign as a backup to the Redskins and reunite with Joe Gibbs in 1986. Just sat on the sidelines and then 1987 came along. Got to show his stuff in the first game of the season when Jay Schroeder went down with an injury. Then the next week a missed extra point cost the Redskins against the Falcons. The strike came along and by the time the regulars came back, Doug Williams was on the bench. Just back and forth until the last game of the season against the Vikings. Williams came off the bench and led the Redskins to victory and won the starting job for the playoffs. The rest is history. People forget that during the mid 80's his wife died from cancer and things up until the playoffs were really rocky for him.

Doug Williams endured a lot. A lot of criticism from the media and a lot of racial hatred from fans in Tampa. Williams was an erratic talent throughout his career. When Doug was having an off day, he could look like the worst QB in history, but when he was on, he could look as good as any QB that played the game.
Most importantly, Doug was a class act, a man of much humility, who let his playing do all of his talking rather than showing any hatred in the media. The media would have loved it to stir up any racism from Doug.
Tampa had their most success while under Doug, but he was the lowest paid QB in the league. Hugh Culverhouse refused to give Doug a raise, even after Williams had taken them to the championship game, but he was unfortunately injured for the game or the Buccaneers may have made it to their first Super Bowl. Even after Doug’s wife passed away after being married for a little over a year, Culverhouse still refused to pay Williams any more money.
Doug proved his worth to the world when for one quarter in a Super Bowl, Doug was Johnny Unitas, Dan Marino and Tom Brady all rolled into one QB. Williams happen to have one of his upswings in the biggest game in history. At that time, no team had ever won a super bowl after trailing by 10 points or more. The Redskins had dug themselves a 10 point deficit in the first quarter of that super bowl.
Even after being injured in the first quarter, Williams limped out to give his answer to Dan Reeves, John Elway and the media and his reply was so loud, it can still be heard today. That was Doug’s exclamation point on his response to all of the hate and criticism he endured. Williams made history in a single unforgettable quarter of football. That was Doug’s final statement to the Media and the entire world.
If Doug was to play that game today, he would have walked out to midfield after the super bowl and held out a huge microphone and perform the biggest mic drop in history, then walk off of the field.

This was a sad commentary on the times. It makes me proud to see alot of African American QB,s get drafted #1 these,days but sadly its still not equal. I feel they don't get as many chances to succeed. For instance White QB,s no as talented seem to be able to keep back-up jobs way more often then their black counterparts

The "talent experts" like Kiper, McShay, Brandt, Mayock all differed on the order Watson, Trubisky, and Mahomes should be drafted. Even within the Bears organization, GM Pace wanted Trubisky while then HC Fox liked Watson.

@Myron Woodson True. Williams early career suffered playing for an expansion team for 5 years, kind of like Jim Plunkett who was highly-rated coming out of Stanford. Plunkett was beat up playing on a lousy team for 5 years and then languished on the Niners bench for 2 years. He won 2 Super bowls with the Raiders, but his career stats likely won't get him into the HOF.
