Great job on the video. Longtime viewer, first time commenter. Live two hours northwest of Birmingham. Most of these venues were renovated and used in the World Games two years ago and really impressed the US Olympic Committee and the IOC. It wouldn’t shock me that Birmingham is eventually used as a Trials site or goes for an Olympic bid in the future. Legacy Arena was originally built as the BJCC in the late ‘70s for the Birmingham Bulls, a WHA team that missed the cut in the NHL merger despite doing decently at the box office. If a solid ownership group could form, the city could finally get the NHL team the place was originally intended to house. That place looks like it could do a better job right now of hosting the Coyotes than the Delta Center can. Legion Field is too important to the city and Alabama’s history to tear down but too dilapidated to use on a regular basis. It wouldn’t shock me that the city tears the majority or all of it down after the Magic City Classic contract expires and use the bones of the place for the Legion if they get an MLS bid or let the high schools in the area use it. You did forget one stadium (if you could call it a stadium; it has no permanent seats). Barber Motorsports Park is the home of the Indy race that happens next week and is a hidden gem in the world of motor racing. Highly recommend going there to visit the track and motorcycle museum on the grounds, plus there’s a Buc-ee’s right outside the track.
I live in the apartment building on 1st and 14th street, opposite corner of Regions Field! Shockingly, after 2 and a half years of living literally right next door, I've never been to a game. Gonna make sure I change that before I finish school and my lease is up.
Mobile you'll have Ladd-Peebles, the Mobile Civic Center, the Mitchell Center, Hancock Whitney, Stanky Field, and Hank Aaron Stadium. Two of those venues don't have a regular tenant and Ladd-Peebles is about to be that way, although they may hold onto Williamson since the school is literally across the street. Montgomery would be even shorter since it basically would just be Alabama State's facilities, the Cramton Bowl, and the stadium where the Biscuits play. Huntsville might actually have more of not depending on how big the gyms are at UAH and Alabama A&M, but he'd at least want to rope in Madison to pick up the baseball team that used to be the Mobile BayBears. I do see lot of opportunities for jokes between those three markets, though.
hopefully if the ufl is a success, the stallions can host a throwback game at legion field once a year, and hopeully they can lure more international soccer games, or nfl preseason games in the future.
What bad part of town? It's had more events there than you've probably been to recently and there's been no issues there. Post a link to any incidents reported there. It's got 2 hotels and restaurants near by. Just say you're scared.
While Birmingham, Alabama has never had a major pro sports team, I feel like an NFL team would have good fan support in the city, with Alabama being a hotbed for college football. Most NFL teams in college football hotbed are well supported (Saints, Falcons, Titans, both Ohio teams).
As a season ticket holder for the Legion, you're spot on about the pitch conditions being the primary reason for Legion leaving PNC for Protective. It doesn't drain properly so water would puddle up whenever it rained, which Birmingham gets quite a lot of during the USL season, and most games the pitch would have sand spots and dead grass. The team would often have to cancel games due to how horrible the pitch would get. Despite many complaints from Legion's FO, UAB refused to properly maintain the pitch. Hell, the team actually offered to buy it from UAB so they could maintain it themselves but the university declined. Once the city offered the team to play in Protective, they cited UAB's failure to maintain the pitch as failure to uphold their end of their agreement and moved out. I will say that most Legion fans hate that they play in Protective now and are hoping the team is planning on getting their own soccer specific stadium in the future. The stadium is too big for the team and the game day experience is abysmal at the best of times no matter what sport is playing there.
Great video. Quick Legion Field sidenote: Historically, both Alabama and Auburn use to play some of their home games there. Auburn's last one was in 1991 while Alabama's was in 2000. Auburn's campus is much further away and travel to Birmingham is about a 3 hour drive.
I feel like you are going to make a video of every city in the world before Madrid hahaha. A lot of decent stadiums if you consider the surrounding neughbouring cities of the metropolitan area such as Getafe, Leganés or Vallecas
OK maybe forgivable to leave out the Perry Barr dog track. But no mention of NEC, Edgbaston cricket ground, Villa Park, St Andrews!!! Not even any scenic shots of the M6. I feel robbed!! 😢😀
Unfortunately, being placed on the National Register of Historic Places does not protect a building or structure from demolition. Happens all the time 😥
They gutted Soldier Field in Chicago to give the Bears a “new” stadium. Now they’re looking for another place to play, and Soldier Field was removed from the NRHP.
We have so many nice stadiums that literally nobody uses. Unfortunately, Birmingham will never have any major, large skill, professional teams because we are not viewed as a big enough television market for leagues like the NBA or the NFL to think that they can make money here.
It's less that and more that there isn't a billionaire here that's willing to buy a team and move one here. Salt Lake City's metro is only slightly bigger than Birmingham, but they have two professional teams now due to having a dedicated owner.
@@UAShortround actually Salt Lake City has three. They have had an MLS team since 2005 and it’s one of the best supported in the entire league. They also have the Utah Jazz and now whatever the NHL team will be called. The main difference between Salt Lake City and Birmingham is that the fans actually show up and support teams there. They got these top-tier professional teams because they showed out and supported the minor-league teams that they had first. Salt Lake City has had a hockey team that has been below both the NHL and the AHL for a long time and they still bring 10,000-12,000 people per game to that. That shows that it works. They had basketball before the Utah Jazz as well. They also had soccer. Birmingham may bring 1000 people to our hockey team, maybe 5000 on a good day to our college basketball team, maybe 500 to our NBA league team, we can’t even bring close to 10,000 most of the time for a spring football team… They look at that and they’re like why would we bring anything nice there? it seems difficult for people to comprehend, but you don’t get nicer and better stuff. If you don’t show that you care with what you have first.
The lack of support can be partially traced to a former university of alabama in Tuscaloosa coach who faught to keep pro-teams out of Birmingham, AL so he didn't have to compete for donor and financial support.
They did mention Bill Harris Arena at the end - isn't that where Miles plays BB? I think the BSC venues may be too small (10K FB, 5K BB) to make the list, and maybe the Samford venues as well? But yeah, good shout out to the smaller colleges - all are great venues. Quick trivia: The first ever Football Game at Legion Field was Samford vs Birmingham-Southern!
Like others in the comments I assumed that this would be the original Birmingham in the West Midlands. If, as hinted at towards the ed of this video, yo do do the English Birmingham there are going to be issues of what geographical area you actually include. You usually do the wider metropolitan areas, which is fine, but with Birmingham the wider metropolitan area includes several towns and cities that are definitely NOT Birmingham. St Andrews, Villa Park and Edgbaston would be fine, but places like Molineux, The Ricoh Arena and the Bescot Stadium might be more controversial if you suggest that they are in Birmingham.
FFS here's me expecting Villa Park & St Andrews.
And Edgbaston.

I'm hoping the intro VT was done as a joke. Of not, the vids you've shown are of Birmingham UK 😅

But Mobile and Montgomery are smaller cities with a lot of people not knowing about their sport’s history.

I was at the first Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa. It was raining and cold that day, and Auburn prevailed.
