The 90s’ Basketball Sneakers That Defined an Era

- 90s' Basketball was one for the ages. Not only did we witness the greatest of all time with MJ and The Chicago Bulls, but we also saw the debut of some of the most iconic basketball sneakers of all time. The market was blossoming into what it is today and brands like Nike, Reebok, Converse and Adidas were viscously competing against each other. This led to innovation at a rate we've yet to ever experience again. There are a lot of incredible sneakers that came out during this era and we chose the ones that mean the most to us. Hope you guys enjoy the vid! - Bryan & Nacho

I bought the Penny Hardaway 1s right when they first came out& I LOVED them. HOWEVER they fell apart in a week,I took them back, and found out they were recalled. So I traded them in for the Deion Sanders shoes and $40 bucks back in cash cuz they didn't cost as much as the Penny's
Yes! FILA whatever happened to it?
Foamposit AF1s
Yeah you missed a lot like Air carnivore and Bo Jackson ...Deon Diamond Turfs and Mutombo Adidas were like the next city wings in my city
What about Nike's Tuned tech frm like 98/99?
90s is just the greatest era of everything ! Music, sports , movies , cartoons … I wish I could go relive the 90s …
....not for Horror movies though. IMO
I was a kid and teen in the 90s it was good times
@@juniorjames7076 most horror movies suck ngl regardless era lol
We’re kinda reliving the 90s and 80s with all the remakes of movies and shows and retro shoes because it seems that creativity has just disappeared in these areas and the stuff that is new is basically similar to itself with just slight minimal changes
@@TreyLopez482 for damn sure lol
I’m an 80’s baby, 90’s kid. Watching the Knicks, wearing Starter jackets, buying NBA trading cards, reading Slam magazine, eagerly waiting for Eastbay catalog in the mail, playing basketball with my friends at school, getting up early in the morning for the Stuart Scott NBA highlights on ESPN (RIP). I’ve owned a lot of the shoes you mentioned. Various Jordan 11’s, the Air Much Uptempo (not the Air More), Olympic 180’s, Various Kamikaze 2’s, various Grant Hill 95s and 96s, various Fila Spaghettis, various Reebok Questions. These are shoes that I still wear to this day. I’m glad they’re still getting retro’d. I would also throw in the Air Zoom Flight 95s and Penny’s Air Penny line including the Flight One.
You just described my whole life brother, except for the Knicks, I was a die hard Laker and Bulls fan. But everything else is spot on. Great times back then.
The NBA jerseys in the 90s are the greatest as well, so much character just like all the NBA player's nicknames in the 90s.
90s was 🤴
I miss everything about the 90s tbh. That feeling generally from that time cannot be re created but at least sneakers that have that nostalgia can be like a token of that era.
Nothing beats the 1990s especially for basketball and with sneakers the relationship is interconnected and intertwined I wish sneakerheads can apply pressure to companies to re-release 90s retros
Appreciate you Big Rob. Hope enjoyed the video Brodie

So glad that the 90s sneakers are making a comeback! They have the most interesting design, and are actually quite comfortable on feet.
no they not lol
TBH - they never left - they're always being re-released in some form
They aren’t comfortable at all.
@@SoSikWitIt A jealous Gen Xer hating on Gen Z and millennials detected. Funny, you Gen Xers hate us, but you sure love copying us and sure love our culture.
@@samueldavis5895 Way more comfortable than all the cheap synthetic material that shoe companies use now, you're tripping.
Flipping thru the Eastbay catalog checking these out was a pastime as a kid. Lots of iconic shoes that were not even basketball related from that era. Emmit Smith's collab with Reebok, the Big Hurt's, Nike's Jerome Bettis collab in the early 2ks. Scottie Pippen had some legit models too man I could go on. I hope there is a whole episode on the pumps now that I found this channel.
1:05 Bred 11s
1:27 Air Uptempos
3:35 Foamposites
5:30 Reebok Kamikazes
6:50 Fila Grant Hills
Thanks man
I'm surprised the Reebok Omni Zone 2 Pumps didn't make the list. Back in the day, I had the black and white pair that Dee Brown wore when he won the dunk contest in '91. Very iconic sneaker.
I had those too bro, I begged my parents to buy them for me for months. Finally found a pair on sale when we were vacationing in Tijuana, Mexico of all places.
I agree 100%
The penny's were my favorite during that time...what started it for me was the Nike flight zoom 96
Takes me back to the school days when I wanted the 11's, Penny's, GP's, Pippens, etc.. The thing is I could never afford them all. Now that I'm older can afford stuff I managed to cop a few 90's retro kicks. Some of my favs of all time on the list.
Could never afford any of them. But now I'm 36 I went back and picked up 5 pairs of Iverson DMX Answers in 3 different colors, barry sanders zoom turf 97, green kamikaze 2 high with the rain drops, penny 2s. Working on more mostly not jordans. Sneakers are fun.
Nike was definitely what I wore in the 90's. Some of my favorites that didn't make the list are the Air Maestro, and Maestro 2; Air Way Up (Iverson wore this at Georgetown), Air Unlimited, Air Swift Flight and the Air Jordan 7.
Those are all just as worthy as the ones in the video. We’ll have to do a part 2. Appreciate it Brian!
I had both Maestro and still have hopes for the return of both in OG form, the 1 was the first Nike sneaker I had and never looked back, so sad Reebok and Fila didn't continue making basketball shoes, those 3 were my go to brands.
The 90s basketball sneakers have become the archetype that's still being followed by new sneakers being designed today.
From the thumbnail alone, you could tell that the Foams and the 11s are timeless. Even the tech in those 2 are at par with some performance sneakers on court today.
The Foamposites are timeless man. Can’t wait for them to comeback one day haha
@@NachoAverageFinds you and I both! Foams are so ahead of its time, more and more people appreciate them now 25 years after the first release.
The 90s was the best year for sneakers. They released some of my all time favs including the AJ6, Nike Air Command Force, the Nike air Huarache, Nike air unlimited, cb94, and so much more. I think 1991 was probably the pinnacle for sneaker designs. While the tech wasn’t there yet in terms of comfort they were doing some unique things with pump technology and other uses of materials such as neoprene. Very innovative time. Today I feel lacks that creativity and the urge to break conventional boundaries by appealing more towards hype beast and street fashion culture.
never lied me and my homie talk about the era all the time it was very competitive i was a sneaker head magazine where they used to used have the release dates slam magazine, kicks magazine, eastbay which i just found out they got bought out by champs smdh not the same no more
Air Max CB 94(Charles Barkley), Nike Zoom flight 95(Jason Kidd),Nike Air Unlimited(David Robinson) Nike Air Carnibore, Nike Air Raid, and Patrick Ewing, were also iconic
I had quite a few of these shoes. I got started with the kamikaze 2s the gloves, followed by the questions, followed by the answers. I always wanted the shaqnosis. The 90s had the best shoe line up in my opinion. Maybe including some early 2000’s stuff too
What's up Eric! It's time to buy some Shaqnosis. They are actually available right now I believe. Thanks for watching my friend
What did you like about the Kamikazes?
@@phillyjoejones5161 at the time they were like nothing I had scene outside of the shaqnosis. I was in like 4th grade at the time and those were dope. Those two pairs of reeboks are what got me into sneakers.
@@ericwesche7707 That's great too know. I was the guy who originally designed that sneaker.
@@phillyjoejones5161 serious? That’s awesome. Do you still have any laying around anywhere? I’d love a size 12 if you got them.
For an oldhead like me, this video is fantastic and full of nostalgia. It's pretty hard to choose from all the shoes we had back in.the day, but I will list 5 favorites of mine that were not mentioned in the video, in no particular order:
Reebok The Blast
Nike Air Max2 Uptempo
Nike Air Bakin'
Nike Air Shake Ndestrukt
Adidas Real Deal
I’m glad you enjoyed it OG!
🔥 video Nacho! Nothing beats 90s sneakers. My all time favorite has to be the Air Max 2 CB 94. That shoe was my introduction to being a sneaker head.
Me too bro
90s Era Sneakers were untouchable fr never ever see 👀 that again 💪 💪
the reebok pump will always remain my favorite high top / basketball sneaker due to the fact that my left foot is bigger than my right. I have to do 8 pumps left and 21 pumps right lmao
That’s wild haha custom fit for each foot
That's crazy my wife tells me all the time I'm stuck in the 90s. I miss the 90s
i'm right there with you can't get enough
The Flight lineup was simply amazing throughout the 90s, especially the early 90s releases. IMO aside from signature shoes the Flight line should be Nike's "signature" line so to speak and it's a shame the branding isnt getting much love. The Flights were up there with Jordan's in terms of style and performance.
I agree. We rarely hear about something without a name attachment or endorsement, past and present. That's where all the hidden gems and my most worn pieces are.
I have a feeling they will come back soon. Them and Jordan 5s I see are slowly making a comeback
My favorite sneakers from the 90s are the Jordan 6 black infrared, the Dee Brown Reebok Pump, the Michael Chang Reebok Pump (court victory), the Nike Air Raid (Spike Lee/Tim Hardaway), and the Nike Air Flight Lite mid (Barcelona and playoffs).
My brother brought me back a pair of Barkleys from the US in ‘95. The ones that say ‘Sir Charles’ on the bottom in graffiti letters, the air window that goes all around the heel and the elephant-like feet on the side. Still have those, although they are decaying severely… Everything about those shoes was awesome and I loved it.
The 90’s may have been the best for sneakers, but the 80’s were the best for films like The Goonies, Flight of the Navigator, etc 😊
Oh, forgot to mention my favourite sneaker of the time…. definitely the Nike Foamposite, but I’m not young enough or cool enough to wear them now.
haha Yeah the 80s had some fire movies I cant lie
Goonies never say die!
80’s was the best era for action movies but the 90’s were the best for drama and comedy like Friday, dumb and dumber, good fellas, casino, juice, menace to society, the first matrix,Harlem nights, good will hunting the 90’s had some bangers too bruh
It depends on what you like. If you like Et and all that science fiction comic con shit then you’ll love the 80s. Chances are if you love HIP HOP and movies like menace ii society, then it’s 90s all day.
@@NachoAverageFinds WHAT PEOPLE DONT KNOW AIR IS SPELL ''PIP'' IF U PAY ATTENTION ON HIS SIGNATURE U CAN SEE HIS NICKNAME OVER SHOE WHEN U READ BACKWARDS FROM DIFFERENT ANGLE '' AIR '' = '' PIP'' .
As a ball playing kid in the 90’s I had almost every pair of shoes except the converse. Some were ankle rollers for sure and just became your stroll thru the mall kicks, but most were ahead of their time. My 3 favorites were the Jordan 5, Jordan 6, and air more uptempo. So many memories popped up watching this video. Good vid, keep it up.
maaaaaan - i'm a late 80s baby and 90s kid - just fell back in love AGAIN with 90s basketball vibes recently . got my bulls starter jacket back, copped an orlando magic one in a vintage store, got the retro kamikaze 2 (super underrated shoe for outdoor hoops) and a couple other models and just generally wanting to get back into basketball shape with my mates, we might even start an amateur team just to play around . just cuz i fell in love again with that era, so good
I love the glove when I was a kid. I had that shoe and then the one with the buckle. My favorite shoes I've had of all time
I grew up in the 90's and I absolutely loved this vid! From the memories and being a sneakerhead, thank you for posting! My brother worked for Finishline back in 95 & purchased the Jordan 11's and the Shaqnosis. Wore one on each foot during his graduation in 96. 🎓
No one can beat the 90"s nostalgia❤❤❤
I worn down my Foamposites and my Air Breathe Hoops in the late 90s, best decade for basketball shoes IMO 👍🏼
Foamposites came out when I was in middle school. The price point was more than I was given for my entire back to school wardrobe. But they've always been my favorite shoe for just how outrageous they are. Now that I'm older i had to grab a few pair of the years.
The Reebok Pump is my pick. When I think of 90s sneakers the pump is always the first to come to mind.
i missed my chance getting those because the jordan signature line that killed everything that was moving in that era
Great video had those black & turquoise Grand mama's when they came out in the 2000's the 90's sneakers were kool but the 80's era reign supreme🎨💖💛💚
Dope video as usual family ! 90’s def was untouchable … but one that NEEDED to be on this list was the reebok pump, def was heat growing up as a kid . Glad you mentioned those grant hills, people tend to forget about those !
Lots of dope kicks for sure! I wasn't alive during the time, but I can still appreciate the variety and innovation of the kicks that were released back then!
Appreciate it Dylan!
It's 2022 and all I buy/wear are 90s re-releases. The Nike Air Raid (aka Tim Hardaways) is the only favorite of mine that you did not mention. The "outdoor use only" angle was very unique.
The FILA GH2, Air More Uptempo, and the Air Zoom Glove always blows my mind,in terms of design. When kicks were fun back then..
Again, thanks for the great content, nobody is doing this like you two! I always enjoy reminiscing about sneakers from my teen years.
Big time appreciate you Brandon 🙏🙏
My first basketball shoes were the Fila Hill I. I wore those till the soles fell apart. I remember I had holes under my big toes from all the pivoting.
Haha That’s a good first shoe to have. They retro them often. Why not pick a pair up?
One of my favorite shoes during that time was the Kevin Johnson Converse Run n Slam (Black and Purple)
Lived both eras and I have to agree, a lot of big things happened in both but the 90s sit differently in my memories.
Sadly this was when the sneaker wars were cooling off compared to the hot sneaker market of the previous decade. Still some innovation but nothing as innovative as the years 1987-1991 for all the brands. It is good for memories though if you are of a certain age, but the heated market had cooled around 1992. But during a 5 years span (1987-1991) all these brands were cramming as much technology inside a shoe as they could and selling them for high prices. Reebok had the ERS "Energy Return System", Hexalite, and the Pump. Converse had the "Energy Wave" and "React" juice. Asics had "Gel" technology, L.A. Gear had the "Airstream or Airsystem", and the their own version of the Pump called the "Rugulator", and of course the "catapult" and "L.A. lights". Adidas had "torsion" technology, Nike had "Air", "Airmax" and their own version of the Pump as well called the "Air pressure" It was a very innovative time in just a short amount of years span.
Fax. Now the innovation is to deconstruct the OGs and make some alien yeezys
Yeah the technology may have cooled, but the AESTHETICS improved in my opinion in the 90s.
this is my childhood, i remember when i was a kid, we really can't afford these shoes back then.
I begged for the Kamikaze 2 sneakers in 7th grade when they first came out. That was my only xmas present that year and i absolutely loved those shoes!
Air Jordan 'taxi ' 12, Nke Foamposite, Reebok Kamakaze 1 , and the Nike Diamond Turf are my '90s favs.
Hard to cover all the 90s greats but yes! Those are all fire
Diamond turfs were tuff! I was a big dt max guy, shoes looked like they were on fire!!

Ah, The 1990S…
Looking Back Now, I Think The Best Signature Shoe I Had In My Collection Was The Black/White Nike Cb34. It Was My Lucky Shoe. I Used To Score Frequent 3Pointers When Playing With Friends.
One Of My Favorite Shoes In My Collection Was The Nike Air Flight Turbulence. The Jordan 11 Was Sold Out In 1997/1998 So I Settled For The Turbulence, Which Came In A Colorway Similar To That Of The Concord 11S. It Had A Black Patent Leather Toe Too.
I Wanted The Reebok Es22 But I Ended Up With Its Spiritual Successor - The Rush 2.
The One Pair Of Shoes I Want To Have From The Late 1990S Is The Nike T-Bug - Tim Hardaway’S Shoes In 1998. The More I Want It Now Since Tim Is About To Be In The Hall Of Fame This Year.
Damn the Nike T Bug! My guy really lived through it. I was a kid in the 90s but that’s awesome Paul. Thanks for sharing my friend
Man these videos are pure nostalgia ! I was really into shoes in the 90's and early 2000's and especially basketball shoes and casual trainers like Reebok Exo's (mine were white leather on white suede). I remember getting the Scotty Pippen 2's and The Gloves that zipped! My god they were fire! Super comfortable too. Man I wore them off the court and had more for on. I put in work hard for shoes and grabbed a pair every month. Basketball shoes were crazy better looking then. Appreciate the video. Really took me back to my teenage years.
Love the quality in all your videos. Great work as usual. Would've loved to see a longer video with some more iconic shoes from the era. I felt like some notable shoes were left out. I also think it would benefit to edit out all the stuttering in your speech even if it meant some hard cuts.
These are definately some iconic 90's kicks. I had a pair of the Kamikaze 1's as a teen but i got then a year later after they were released. The Jordan XI is my all time favourite shoe bar none. recently i picked up a pair of shoes that i rarely see or hear people talk about - Jason Kidd's Nike Zoom Flight '95s with the "bug-eye" like bubble on the outer soles
Oh yeah the Jason Kidds are a must for any 90s sneaker enthusiasts. Love those!
I believe that shoe is re-releasing this year
Brent Barry wore the bug eye shoe when he won the 96 dunk contest (with the jacket and all).

90s baby here and have to agree the 90s was a decade of its own!
The story of my childhood, as told by sneakers
90s kid
Eastbay magazine was my go to source for sneakers searching in the 90's. My top kicks I enjoy due to the comfort was the Rodman's Nike Darwin and the Converse Sky Rider mid kicks. The 90's was a magical decade for practically anything from Basketball, to Video games, pro wrestling, the internet, action movies going wild in theaters,e.t.c...
Believe it or not you can still get an eastbay catalog sent in the mail. I must have ordered through them online and now I get a catalog every few months. It's definitely missing that magical feeling of opening up an eaatbay and seeing the new shoes for the year.
I used to sit on the toilet reading eastbay magazines as a kid, I could name every shoe in town!!
@@evergreenrider I'm sure much of the allure is lost due to the designs and materials not being as good and the cool information on the shoes they used to write about.

Favorite retro sneakers are 100% from the early 90s.
* Nike Air Jordan 6 Black infrared. The sneaker MJ first wore in the 91 All Star Game. (The very first sneaker I ever fell in love with)
* Nike Air Flight Lite Mid 2 as worn by Scottie Pippen during the 92 playoffs & 92 Olympics.
* Reebok Pumps. Almost any models of any colorway were fresh. But the Dee Brown version was dope and also Michael Chang's Court Victory (citron colorway)
* The Converse Aeroglide (Larry Johnson's very first signature sneaker)
* Nike Air Raid as worn by Tim Hardaway in that Spike Lee Commercial in 1992.
Great video. Definitely takes me back. Born in the 80s, grew up in the greatest decade, the 90s. So many great shoes in the 90s that you'll need to do multiple videos to cover them all. Nike Air Flight Zoom '95 - Kidd, Nike Air CB 94 - IMO, Barkley's most iconic shoe, Nike Air Darwin - Rodman wore these (I think this was the first Nike to feature the backward swoosh), Nike Air Go LWP - I think this was the first lightweight performance shoe and they were great, Nike Air Adjust Force - interchangeable straps.
the early 90s was something else not just baseball but every sport in general .
Alot of NBA players also wore the Reebok insta pumps vertical IV's back in the 90s (Above the Rims).
AirMax 180s was my favorite ever and it's pretty much the only basketball shoes I buy today. Those olympic Barkley's with the gold threads were it!
Late in my life I treated my dad like garbage but looking back I had Jordans in the 4th Grade and any other expensive Nikes I wanted because my 17 year old brother who had a job had... Rest in Peace Pops
love love love, thanks!
All the shoes were retroed between 2010 and 2016. It was so much fun growing up as a young sneakerhead with all these and the LeBron, KD, and D Rose shoe releases.
Great, great list. I absolutely loved the Patrick Ewings and L.A. Gears. My favorite band from that era was and still is, Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
My two favorite pairs during the 90s were the Penny Hardaway 3 Black Royal and the Jason Kidd Zoom Flight 5.
He never saw the JKidds I bet
I remember wanting to get my hands on the Nike Air Bacon, the ones Tim Hardaway wore during his time with the Heat. Before that Converse shoe Rodman was with Nike and had the Darwin during his time w/ the Spurs, and the Air Worm while w/ the Bulls.
Good vid. Really enjoyed it
The 90s were full of great shoes. I wish I remembered some of the their names because honestly they were constantly pushing the concepts. They weren't all winners but they just kept trying and kept the ideas flowing. Wish I remembered the shoe. It there was a NJ ike model that had a " harness" that could be taken off. And what Reebok was doing was amazing as well.
