  • Warning: this description and these clips contain SPOILERS. If you have never seen the film "This is England" or it's three TV miniseries sequels, and you plan to at some point in the future, you should stop reading now, and do NOT watch these clips! In addition, you might want to watch the clips FIRST before reading the descriptions below.
    Unknown by most people in the US, "This is England" was a hardhitting 2006 British drama, written and directed by Shane Meadows. The story centered on young skinheads in 1983 England. The film illustrated how their subculture, which had its roots in 1960 West Indies culture, was adopted by white nationalists, which led to divisions within the skinhead scene. The film was followed by three miniseries sequels, "This is England 86 / 88 / 90".
    In this 2nd compilation, taken from the final miniseries, "This is England 90" (set 7 years after the original film), Combo has come out of two more prison sentences a reformed and repentant man, who has finally found peace and happiness within himself as he leaves his job to eat lunch. He is surprised by Milky, who's face shows the permanent scars of Combo's vicious attack at the end of the first film. Milky wants to go to a local cafe to talk the past incident out, "man to man". Combo is wary, but he reluctantly goes along. In the cafe, he emotionally apologizes for what he did to Milky, saying that he will never forgive himself for it, but hoping that one day, Milky will be able to.
    What happens next is unexpected and unforgettable. Im not going to describe what transpires, except to say that the words screamed out (heard from a distant POV) and the final remorseful facial expression at the end of this clip (and the series) are absolutely heartbreaking. The original film, and the series, are brilliant masterpieces in every way.
    (unfortunately, these two videos are blocked from viewing in the UK)

      I believe that he always was a small fragile man. It's just that the circumstances in his early life bring out an ugly side to him that we see in the original film. He was a product of his environment.
      The upbringing he had and the mistakes he made leading to him going to prison, then coming out into Thatchers England with literally no hope of anything other than becoming just another unemployment statistic.
      Immigration and racism drew Combo in during his incarceration, it served as something to make him feel superior and to give him a purpose in life but really it was just a facade born out of frustration and anger because of the lack of support or love in his life. Deep down the man was never a racist, he was always a good man at heart as proven in various aspects during the series.

    My suspicion is that Milky didn't expect Combo to be so remorseful. When he was, he was caught off guard, and then had to deal with the fact that he's just condemned him to death anyway. He realized he and his family were just as full of hate as Combo was in the past. Ultimately, two wrongs don't make a right. What happened was revenge, not justice.

    The fact that this scene divides such opinion on here is a testament to the acting and directing in operation here. This is one of the most powerful scenes I've ever witnessed in a British drama/movie.

    • @deathbyslipknot
      @deathbyslipknot Před 7 lety +67

      Dude, this is one of the most powerful scenes I've ever witnessed in anything - ever. This Is England as a whole is arguably the best piece of art ever to me. The level of emotion, drama, and realism portrayed through the actors is on another level. I've never seen anything like it. The dinner scene where Lol and Woody drop the news about Lol's dad absolutely floored me, as did the scene where Woody ran into Milky and the gang while walking with Jen. And just when I thought they couldn't do it again this scene, with Combo and Milky happened. And it devastated me. This scene is pure dread and horror and despair. Everything from Combo apologizing to Milky, to Milky's breakdown when his family took Combo away, just kills me. You can tell that even though Milky hated Combo for what he did and wanted him to suffer, that in the end, it deeply hurt him to do that to Combo.
      God, I can't believe something this perfect exists. I'm American and practically no one knows about This Is England over here, I can't get any of the box sets of the series because they're like only sold overseas.

    • @pravstar1
      @pravstar1 Před 7 lety +11

      Jake , I couldn't have put it better, its as you say acting of just the highest order throughout ,from the movies and carried on into the boxset series.
      Ive seen a lot of the behind the scenes acting and it just seems that the fact that they all got on so well off set transcends itself to these performances.
      This is one of the most brutal scenes ive ever seen. Somewhere in your heart you hope milky can find forgiveness ,but its the darkness in evidence here that just makes this particular scene extra special. I own the movie and the boxsets , there are numerous copies available over here on ebay. If its of any assistance I can ask how much it costs to send to the USA. This as you say is a rare work of art

    • @deathbyslipknot
      @deathbyslipknot Před 7 lety

      I appreciate that man but the thing is, I've searched extensively all over the internet for the boxsets and film, and they are indeed available on ebay and Amazon to ship from overseas. However, there's a disclaimer on every copy of the film/boxsets saying something like "This product will not work on most DVD/Bluray players in the US". I don't know how to get around that. It seems like its region locked or something. It looks like I'd have to find copies that were manufactured over here. Do you know anything about that?

    • @pravstar1
      @pravstar1 Před 7 lety

      The dvds and blu rays over here in the UK are region 2 or region B, US operates region 1 or region A. Im fortunate to have an unlocked blu ray player that can play any region copies including those from the US. How revenge of an act can sometimes if not almost always feel as hollow as the regret of the act itself. The beating consumed their lives in different ways but consumed their lives none the less. If anything this is a great way of showing how revenge is pointless were as reconciling at least helps you to move forward. That how I see it anyway. I think Milky realises throughout the course of their interaction that Combo is now a man who has essentially stepped outside of the monster he was and seen the error of his ways, however pier pressure and the fact the wheels had spun too far to turn back will probably leave him with the same regret that ate away at Combo all of those years.
    I also think Combo instinctively knew from the beginning that Milky was trying to hook him into something but it’s almost as if he imprisoned himself to what was coming out of genuine remorse.
    What is so interesting is that when we see big tough guys in films, we see them beaten whilst they’re still at their towering best, but Combo is a guy who’s turned himself around and is meek in comparison to how he used to be - that’s what makes this scene particularly powerful.
    The way Combo tried to get closer to his kidnappers in the van like some kind of childlike reliance instead of going closer to the NF extremist members who are clearly there to torture and kill him before burying him at sea is an amazing play on how bad these guys from Combo’s past were. The way he was dragged up the stairs to his demise was just spine tingling.
    A striking piece of artwork by Meadows and Graham.
    I didn’t like the original film all that much, but the series has brought it all together and propelled This is England into being a powerful masterpiece.

    This reminds me of what happened to one of my dad's mates. He shot someone in Jamaica and the guy was left in a wheelchair. He fled to England in the late 80's and lived here till 1997.
    He got found out as being an illegal entrant to the UK, because he was arrested for beating someone up who told him to "fuck off back to where you come from" for accidentally knocking over someone's drink in a pub.
    Within 6 months of being deported back to Jamaica, he was shot dead by the relatives of the guy who he paralysed.
    What I'm trying to say is that certain things live long in people's memories. What Combo did to Milky would never be forgotten by his family.

    Its Combas acceptance for that makes sense. I did something similar to a friend of mine because he stole something out my house. We were friends, at that point, 17 years gone. After what I did to him, the coppers came and arrested me for GBH (Grievous Bodily Harm). The drive to the station, I sat there remembering everything, my life, my friend, my stupidity. When they told me what I done, I wept in the interview, showing me pictures, everything. It was over nothing, but I learned then that honestly, violence is not an answer. I would say that at 20 years old, at that point, I was similar to combo. And it took that awful and stupid thing to make me realise that it truly does take more of a man to let shit go and walk away. I learned a lesson, I never got a prison sentence, I was lucky, my former mate recovered, when he was home, about 8 months after, it was his birthday. The day before, I went round to the house, faced his family and apologised to them all, and himself. They were silent, I handed him his card and said "av a good one" and walked away. I never heard from any of them or him, ever again. I don't seek forgiveness, I did what was right and he's living life and happy, as am I. I am aware this was just a film, but guilt killed him.
    If hed apologised in the street and realised it was a set up when Milky was trying to get him in the car and chinned him, that wouldve saved him.
    Had he got in the car and realised it was a set up when hed passed 5 or 6 cafes and pulled the handbrake up and got tore into him, that wouldve saved him.
    Had he got a few good hits in and gone down fighting when Milkys family surrounded him, theyd have realised what they were about to do wouldve been harder to get away with and mightve had to let him go with a bit of a kicking.
