    The button on the steering wheel is not a simple start button, it has different functions depending on whether you press the brake pedal or not.
    And with a machine as powerful as a car, I want to be able to decide whether it is switched on, ready to drive or switched off.
    In principle, the problem with all these automated systems is, that they only work as well as the number of factors they can use to make decisions. Tesla has very complex systems that certainly work quite well, but there will also be cases where the car reacts incorrectly. However, the manual switching of the operating and driving mode is always 100% as I want or need it.
    BMW has made the way in which the various systems are activated and deactivated very clever and user-orientated.
    I also drive a Skoda Enyaq which has a start button, but doesn't actually need it as just getting into the car and pressing the brake-pedal is enough to activate it. However, I can't, for example, get into the car on the passenger side and enter a route as the car is dead until someone gets into the driver's seat and presses the brake pedal. If I pick someone up and have to wait for them in the car, either the standby mode including dipped headlights remains switched on all the time (which is often very annoying) and you have to be extremely careful not to hit the power pedal or I confirm the "start button" to switch off the driving mode. But then, despite seat and belt recognition, nothing can be operated, no power windows, no windscreen wipers, all the controls apart from the touchscreen are dead and after 30 seconds the interior light goes out and can no longer be switched on. WTF!!!
    The smartphone generation will consider it old school, but just like the BMW i3, I would like to have a main switch where I decide what the car should and may do!
    The lack of typical EV settings is sometimes annoying, but is also due to the time of development. 10 years ago, nobody would have thought of this. Yes, it is unforgivable that BMW has not developed the system further (e.g. no Android Auto either).
    For example, I really miss the heated steering wheel and the preheating of the seat and steering wheel.
    On the other hand, the i3 can do things that some much more modern cars can't, such as the time-controlled pre-air conditioning, which even the penultimate generation of the Hyundai Kona can't do. And the Skoda Enyaq has a ridiculous two timers.
    I have never missed a mute button on the steering wheel, as a simple press on the volume control, which can be operated blindly, is sufficient. With the Skoda, operating the controls on the steering wheel is essential, otherwise you have to use the touch button or the touchscreen, which only works if you look at it.
    Yes, 50kW charging power is low, but it has this from 0-90%, which makes it easy to charge the car at any SOC. The Skoda Enyaq can charge at 130kW on paper (often only 20kW in winter) but only at very low SOC. If I drive to the charging station with 40%, it is often only a little over 70kW and then drops continuously more and more. At 80% you have to be lucky if it still charges at 50kW (and that's with an 80kWh battery).
    So when travelling, you have to plan the charging stops so that you arrive at less than 20% if possible, which makes it very tedious as there is usually still too much in the battery at the nearest charging point and the next charging point can often no longer be reached safely.
    To the loading connection: czcams.com/video/yNDMBpq44fE/video.htmlsi=JL_W6uo7Jp9ciUnO
    The Skoda Enyaq has a tare weight of 2.2 tonnes but is as susceptible to wind as a van. I think the body shape is the decisive criterion, not the weight.
    The small battery in combination with the narrow tyres, the small size and weight and the low consumption (up to 100-110km/h) are the perfect compromise between the luxury of individual mobility and environmental protection for me. The battery size is sufficient for 90-95% of all journeys and why should I have to carry around an unnecessarily heavy battery for the rest?
    Yes, a higher charging capacity (75kW from 0-90% would be enough) would make longer trips easier.
    The BMW i3 is always seen as a 4-door model. But it is a 2-door model with easier access to the rear seats. Show me a 2-door car where you can get into the back so easily?
    And the rear doors of some small cars are so tiny that only children can get in halfway easily.
    The BMW i3 is also not a 4-seater but a 2+2 seater. The door concept fits perfectly. I've never heard anyone complain about a Porsche 911, but the i3 is constantly criticised.
    I'm usually travelling alone or with my wife and it's very pleasant not to have to dance around the rear doors when putting something in the back or getting a dog in.
    Yes, it is tight in narrow parking spaces, but just as tight as a Porsche 911.

      I like that start button to be my brake pedal. But I can understand your point as well. Most automakers are moving away from the "ignition/accessory" mindset now, since it does not need to exist with EVs.

    •  Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@RoamingNorway I think a dedicated on/off switch is very important especially for EVs. This surreptitious way of unnoticed activation and the imperceptible readiness to drive worry me.
      For me, consciously pressing the button means operational safety, in contrast to thoughtlessly pressing the brake pedal. In industry, strict attention is paid to ensuring that a machine can only be started up deliberately.
      In my opinion, it is a bad development if you can start up a CAR just like that.

    I totally get your frustrations with the i3 as I have been driving mine for almost six years. It was lightyears ahead of its time, but has grown old.
    I still love mine, but it's time for a change. I plan on keeping that little beast though!

    Agree 100% with the cons. I am driving an I3 since 4 years now, I have 3 additional negative points: 1. Way too loud pedestrian warning sounds, it makes insane amount of noises. 2. The steering is too heavy. 3. The steering wheel does not 'center itself' back after a corner, which is really annoying and a safety concern. I suppose it's due to the front wheel alignment set-up.

    • @RoamingNorway
      @RoamingNorway  Před 5 měsíci +3

    I totally agree with all your points 👌🏽I’m glad that someone is also kind of a knight picker as I’m with this day to day things.
    Especially the point with the heavy sidewind sensibility was a big problem on the autobahn for me.
    Even after driving a huge VW T5 short version from 2014 for the last 3 years. The bus was a lot more stable on the straight and sidewind impact was easy to correct. Of course this is also due to the longer wheelbase. But the feeling I had when going fast on the autobahn was just not good and did not feel save because of the necessity to counter-steer all the time when going 130 km/h.

  • @cedarcanoe
    @cedarcanoe Před měsícem +2

    Despite all those negatives… BMW was the first with an EV on the road. It was expensive to produce, it was a project of the CEO, it was not developed further. But hey look at the ID-range of VW, it looks like VW copied the i3 concept.

    Another good video, thanks. One point that bothers me is that the camera-based adaptive cruise control fails at least 70% of the time in rain or certain sunlight. This is really very annoying for me because the vehicle suddenly brakes due to the strong recuperation. What's also not so good is that you can't adjust the recuperation.

    • @RoamingNorway
      @RoamingNorway  Před 5 měsíci +2

      Thanks for the nice comment. I agree on the adaptive cruise. Same problem as my Tesla really :)

    •  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Unfortunately, the radar systems in average cars are also easy to interfere with. Rain or fog and especially snowfall can disable the system. But then there is no support at all.
      If the ACC fails on the i3, it still offers the option of simple cruise control.

    What I hear you saying, is that you are unhappy that the i3 was designed about 2010, when insights into EV design were limited. At about 7:30 you state that you wish BMW would continue to develop this car. That won't happen.
    If people look back at automotive history, they will find that in the 1950s and 1960s some people did not want to accept the technology that was fitted to old vehicles. In my neighbourhood, some people learned to rebuild 20 year old vehicles as hotrods, while another group of people learned to restore them so they looked like they did when new. Yes, these skills had to be learned! I didn't belong to either group, but spent my time building boats, which involved learning a different set of skills.
    The key here is to take control over the vehicle, and not just regard it as a product to be used following someone else's instruction manual. There needs to be people who are interested in developing appropriate open source software, as well as people keen on developing replacement hardware solutions.
    I don't know if the i3 is the best candidate for such an approach. However ...
    My daughter and her husband have an i3 and a Tesla Y. I have suggested that in a few year's time, when they get too frustrated with the i3, that they should give it to my son-in-law's father, who has experience customizing vehicles. Let him transform it. He already has some EV insights, and will gain even more after his Volvo EX30 arrives in the next few months.
    My children will undoubtedly inherit our ID Buzz, which will be one year old on 2024-02-13. Yet, I hope that it will undergo a continuous adaptation to improved technology. I imagine that in 10 years time, there will be powerful solid state batteries that will double its current range. I imagine that before then it will be possible to add physical buttons for basic functions. The most offensive part of the Buzz is where one would expect a key to be inserted on older vehicles. There is no place for any insertion, but the location is marked Engine. Needless to say, Buzz doesn't have an engine, it has a motor!

I agree with the doors in tight parking. I am happy about each button to operate in the cockpit, also the pause button 😅. After a 2500 km trip I would wish to have 52-55kWh battery and a 200-250A charger instead the 125A, so agreed to your comment. Although you can charge up to 87% SOC with 49kW.
